SN56.13 — Setting in Motion the Wheel of the Dhamma - The Aggregates Discourse
Disciples, there are these four noble truths.
What are the four?
The noble truth of suffering, the noble truth of the origin of suffering, the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, and the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering.
And what, disciples, is the noble truth of suffering?
It is to be said: The five aggregates subject to clinging, namely, the form aggregate subject to clinging, … up to… the consciousness aggregate subject to clinging.
This is called, disciples, the noble truth of suffering.
And what, disciples, is the noble truth of the origin of suffering?
It is that craving which leads to renewed existence, accompanied by delight and lust, seeking delight here and there, namely sensual craving, craving for existence, craving for nonexistence.
This is called, disciples, the noble truth of the origin of suffering.
And what, disciples, is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering?
It is the remainderless fading away and cessation of that very craving, the giving up and relinquishing of it, freedom from it, non-reliance on it; this is called, disciples, the noble truth of the cessation of suffering.
And what, disciples, is the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering?
It is this noble eightfold path, namely right view, … up to… right concentration, this is called, disciples, the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering.
These are, disciples, the four noble truths.
Therefore, disciples, This is suffering is to be understood; … up to… This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering is to be developed.
