Ubhaya Sutta

Paṭipadāvagga Ubhayasutta “Catasso imā, bhikkhave, paṭipadā.

Disciples, there are these four paths of practice.

Katamā catasso?

What are the four?

Dukkhā paṭipadā dandhābhiññā, dukkhā paṭipadā khippābhiññā, sukhā paṭipadā dandhābhiññā, sukhā paṭipadā khippābhiññā.

The painful path with slow realization, the painful path with quick realization, the pleasant path with slow realization, and the pleasant path with quick realization.

Tatra, bhikkhave, yāyaṁ paṭipadā dukkhā dandhābhiññā, ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭipadā ubhayeneva hīnā akkhāyati.

Among these the path that is painful with slow realization is considered inferior in both respects.

Yampāyaṁ paṭipadā dukkhā, imināpāyaṁ hīnā akkhāyati; yampāyaṁ paṭipadā dandhā, imināpāyaṁ hīnā akkhāyati.

It is considered inferior because it is painful, and it is considered inferior because it is slow.

Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭipadā ubhayeneva hīnā akkhāyati.

This path is inferior in both respects.

Tatra, bhikkhave, yāyaṁ paṭipadā dukkhā khippābhiññā, ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭipadā dukkhattā hīnā akkhāyati.

Then the path that is painful with quick realization is considered inferior because it is painful.

Tatra, bhikkhave, yāyaṁ paṭipadā sukhā dandhābhiññā, ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭipadā dandhattā hīnā akkhāyati.

Then the path that is pleasant with slow realization is considered inferior because it is slow.

Tatra, bhikkhave, yāyaṁ paṭipadā sukhā khippābhiññā, ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭipadā ubhayeneva paṇītā akkhāyati.

Then the path that is pleasant with quick realization is considered superior in both respects.

Yampāyaṁ paṭipadā sukhā, imināpāyaṁ paṇītā akkhāyati; yampāyaṁ paṭipadā khippā, imināpāyaṁ paṇītā akkhāyati.

It is considered superior because it is pleasant, and it is considered superior because it is quick.

Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭipadā ubhayeneva paṇītā akkhāyati.

This path is superior in both respects.

Imā kho, bhikkhave, catasso paṭipadā”ti. Chaṭṭhaṁ.

These are the four paths of practice.
