Pīti Sutta

Upāsakavagga Pītisutta Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati pañcamattehi upāsakasatehi parivuto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.

Then, Anathapindika the householder, accompanied by five hundred lay followers, approached the Blessed One. Having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side.

Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho anāthapiṇḍikaṁ gahapatiṁ bhagavā etadavoca: “Tumhe kho, gahapati, bhikkhusaṅghaṁ paccupaṭṭhitā cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārena.

As he was sitting there, the Blessed One addressed Anathapindika the householder: Householder, you have supported the community of disciples with robes, alms food, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick.

Na kho, gahapati, tāvatakeneva tuṭṭhi karaṇīyā: ‘mayaṁ bhikkhusaṅghaṁ paccupaṭṭhitā cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārenā’ti.

However you should not be satisfied merely with the thought, I have supported the community of disciples with robes, alms food, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick.

Tasmātiha, gahapati, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘kinti mayaṁ kālena kālaṁ pavivekaṁ pītiṁ upasampajja vihareyyāmā’ti.

Therefore you should train yourself thus: How can we, from time to time, enter and dwell in the joy of seclusion?

Evañhi vo, gahapati, sikkhitabban”ti.

Thus should you train yourself, householder.

Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā sāriputto bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “acchariyaṁ, bhante, abbhutaṁ, bhante.

When this was said, the Venerable Sariputta addressed the Blessed One: Wonderful, venerable sir! Marvelous, venerable sir!

Yāva subhāsitañcidaṁ, bhante, bhagavatā: ‘tumhe kho, gahapati, bhikkhusaṅghaṁ paccupaṭṭhitā cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārena.

How well-spoken this is by the Blessed One: Householder, you have supported the community of disciples with robes, alms food, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick.

Na kho, gahapati, tāvatakeneva tuṭṭhi karaṇīyā— mayaṁ bhikkhusaṅghaṁ paccupaṭṭhitā cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārenāti.

However you should not be satisfied merely with the thought, I have supported the community of disciples with robes, alms food, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick.

Tasmātiha, gahapati, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ— kinti mayaṁ kālena kālaṁ pavivekaṁ pītiṁ upasampajja vihareyyāmāti.

Therefore you should train yourself thus: How can we, from time to time, enter and dwell in the joy of seclusion?

Evañhi vo, gahapati, sikkhitabban’ti.

Thus should you train yourself, householder.

Yasmiṁ, bhante, samaye ariyasāvako pavivekaṁ pītiṁ upasampajja viharati, pañcassa ṭhānāni tasmiṁ samaye na honti.

At the time, venerable sir, when a noble disciple enters and dwells in the joy of seclusion, five things do not occur to him.

Yampissa kāmūpasaṁhitaṁ dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ, tampissa tasmiṁ samaye na hoti. Yampissa kāmūpasaṁhitaṁ sukhaṁ somanassaṁ, tampissa tasmiṁ samaye na hoti. Yampissa akusalūpasaṁhitaṁ dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ, tampissa tasmiṁ samaye na hoti.

Whatever pain and displeasure connected with sensual pleasures he may have, that does not occur to him at that time. Whatever pleasure and joy connected with sensual pleasures he may have, that does not occur to him at that time.

Yampissa akusalūpasaṁhitaṁ sukhaṁ somanassaṁ, tampissa tasmiṁ samaye na hoti.

Whatever pain and displeasure connected with unwholesome states he may have, that does not occur to him at that time.

Yampissa kusalūpasaṁhitaṁ dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ, tampissa tasmiṁ samaye na hoti.

Whatever pleasure and joy connected with unwholesome states he may have, that does not occur to him at that time.

Yasmiṁ, bhante, samaye ariyasāvako pavivekaṁ pītiṁ upasampajja viharati, imānissa pañca ṭhānāni tasmiṁ samaye na hontī”ti. “Sādhu sādhu, sāriputta.

Whatever pain and displeasure connected with wholesome states he may have, that does not occur to him at that time.

Excellent, excellent, Sariputta, said the Blessed One.

Yasmiṁ, sāriputta, samaye ariyasāvako pavivekaṁ pītiṁ upasampajja viharati, pañcassa ṭhānāni tasmiṁ samaye na honti.

At the time, Sariputta, when a noble disciple enters and dwells in the joy of seclusion, five things do not occur to him.

The Blessed One continued: At the time when a noble disciple abides having attained joy connected with seclusion, these five states are not present in him: the pleasure and happiness connected with sense satisfaction are not present; the pain and displeasure connected with unwholesome states are not present; the pleasure and happiness connected with unwholesome states are not present; the pain and displeasure connected with wholesome states are not present.
