The Discourse on the Cessation of Action

Navapurāṇavagga Kammanirodhasutta “Navapurāṇāni, bhikkhave, kammāni desessāmi kammanirodhaṁ kammanirodhagāminiñca paṭipadaṁ.

Disciples, I will teach you about old actions, new actions, the cessation of actions, and the path leading to the cessation of actions.

Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmīti.

Listen carefully, pay close attention, and I will speak.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, purāṇakammaṁ?

And what is old action?

Cakkhu, bhikkhave, purāṇakammaṁ abhisaṅkhataṁ abhisañcetayitaṁ vedaniyaṁ daṭṭhabbaṁ …pe…

The eye is old action, constructed, intended, and to be experienced. The ear is old action, constructed, intended, and to be experienced.

jivhā purāṇakammā abhisaṅkhatā abhisañcetayitā vedaniyā daṭṭhabbā …pe…

The nose is old action, constructed, intended, and to be experienced.

mano purāṇakammo abhisaṅkhato abhisañcetayito vedaniyo daṭṭhabbo.

The tongue is old action, constructed, intended, and to be experienced.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, purāṇakammaṁ.

The body is old action, constructed, intended, and to be experienced.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, navakammaṁ? Yaṁ kho, bhikkhave, etarahi kammaṁ karoti kāyena vācāya manasā, idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, navakammaṁ.

The mind is old action, constructed, intended, and to be experienced. This is called old action, disciples.

And what is new action? Whatever action one does now by body, speech, or mind, this is called new action, disciples.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, kammanirodho?

And what is the cessation of action?

Yo kho, bhikkhave, kāyakammavacīkammamanokammassa nirodhā vimuttiṁ phusati, ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, kammanirodho.

When one attains liberation through the cessation of bodily action, verbal action, and mental action, this is called the cessation of action, disciples.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, kammanirodhagāminī paṭipadā?

And what is the path leading to the cessation of action?

Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṁ— sammādiṭṭhi, sammāsaṅkappo, sammāvācā, sammākammanto, sammāājīvo, sammāvāyāmo, sammāsati, sammāsamādhi— ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, kammanirodhagāminī paṭipadā.

It is this very Noble Eightfold Path, namely: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. This is called the path leading to the cessation of action, disciples.

Iti kho, bhikkhave, desitaṁ mayā purāṇakammaṁ, desitaṁ navakammaṁ, desito kammanirodho, desitā kammanirodhagāminī paṭipadā.

Thus I have taught you about old action, new action, the cessation of action, and the path leading to the cessation of action.

Yaṁ kho, bhikkhave, satthārā karaṇīyaṁ sāvakānaṁ hitesinā anukampakena anukampaṁ upādāya, kataṁ vo taṁ mayā.

What should be done by a teacher out of compassion for his disciples, seeking their welfare, has been done by me.

Etāni, bhikkhave, rukkhamūlāni, etāni suññāgārāni.

Here are the roots of trees here are empty places.

Jhāyatha, bhikkhave, mā pamādattha; mā pacchāvippaṭisārino ahuvattha.

Practice, do not be negligent; do not regret it later.

Ayaṁ vo amhākaṁ anusāsanī”ti. Paṭhamaṁ.

This is my instruction to you.
