Pabbatavagga Kāyasutta Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ayaṁ kāyo āhāraṭṭhitiko, āhāraṁ paṭicca tiṭṭhati, anāhāro no tiṭṭhati; evameva kho, bhikkhave, pañca nīvaraṇā āhāraṭṭhitikā, āhāraṁ paṭicca tiṭṭhanti, anāhārā no tiṭṭhanti.

Just as this body is sustained by food, stands because of food, and does not stand without food; in the same way the five hindrances are sustained by their respective nourishments, stand because of nourishment, and do not stand without nourishment.

Ko ca, bhikkhave, āhāro anuppannassa vā kāmacchandassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā kāmacchandassa bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya?

And what is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen sense satisfaction, or for the increase and expansion of arisen sense satisfaction?

Atthi, bhikkhave, subhanimittaṁ.

There is the sign of beauty.

Tattha ayonisomanasikārabahulīkāro— ayamāhāro anuppannassa vā kāmacchandassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā kāmacchandassa bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya.

In this, inappropriate attention is frequently given: this is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen sense satisfaction, or for the increase and expansion of arisen sense satisfaction.

Ko ca, bhikkhave, āhāro anuppannassa vā byāpādassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā byāpādassa bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya?

And what is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen ill-will, or for the increase and expansion of arisen ill-will?

Atthi, bhikkhave, paṭighanimittaṁ.

There is the sign of repulsiveness.

Tattha ayonisomanasikārabahulīkāro— ayamāhāro anuppannassa vā byāpādassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā byāpādassa bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya.

In this, inappropriate attention is frequently given: this is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen ill-will, or for the increase and expansion of arisen ill-will.

Ko ca, bhikkhave, āhāro anuppannassa vā thinamiddhassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā thinamiddhassa bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya?

And what is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen sloth and torpor, or for the increase and expansion of arisen sloth and torpor?

Atthi, bhikkhave, arati tandi vijambhitā bhattasammado cetaso ca līnattaṁ.

There are boredom, lethargy, drowsiness, overeating, and mental sluggishness.

Tattha ayonisomanasikārabahulīkāro— ayamāhāro anuppannassa vā thinamiddhassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā thinamiddhassa bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya.

In this, inappropriate attention is frequently given: this is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen sloth and torpor, or for the increase and expansion of arisen sloth and torpor.

Ko ca, bhikkhave, āhāro anuppannassa vā uddhaccakukkuccassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā uddhaccakukkuccassa bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya?

And what is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen restlessness and remorse, or for the increase and expansion of arisen restlessness and remorse?

Atthi, bhikkhave, cetaso avūpasamo.

There is non-calming of the mind.

Tattha ayonisomanasikārabahulīkāro— ayamāhāro anuppannassa vā uddhaccakukkuccassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā uddhaccakukkuccassa bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya.

In this, inappropriate attention is frequently given: this is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen restlessness and remorse, or for the increase and expansion of arisen restlessness and remorse.

Ko ca, bhikkhave, āhāro anuppannāya vā vicikicchāya uppādāya, uppannāya vā vicikicchāya bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya?

And what is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen doubt, or for the increase and expansion of arisen doubt?

Atthi, bhikkhave, vicikicchāṭṭhānīyā dhammā.

There are things that give rise to doubt.

Tattha ayonisomanasikārabahulīkāro— ayamāhāro anuppannāya vā vicikicchāya uppādāya, uppannāya vā vicikicchāya bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya.

In this, inappropriate attention is frequently given: this is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen doubt, or for the increase and expansion of arisen doubt.

Just as this body is sustained by food, stands because of food, and does not stand without food; in the same way the seven factors of enlightenment are sustained by their respective nourishments, stand because of nourishment, and do not stand without nourishment.

Ko ca, bhikkhave, āhāro anuppannassa vā satisambojjhaṅgassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā satisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya pāripūriyā? Atthi, bhikkhave, satisambojjhaṅgaṭṭhānīyā dhammā. Tattha yonisomanasikārabahulīkāro— ayamāhāro anuppannassa vā satisambojjhaṅgassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā satisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya pāripūriyā.

In this, appropriate attention is frequently given: this is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen mindfulness enlightenment factor, or for the development and completion of arisen mindfulness enlightenment factor.

Ko ca, bhikkhave, āhāro anuppannassa vā dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya pāripūriyā?

And what is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen investigation of dhamma enlightenment factor, or for the development and completion of arisen investigation of dhamma enlightenment factor?

Atthi, bhikkhave, kusalākusalā dhammā, sāvajjānavajjā dhammā, hīnapaṇītā dhammā, kaṇhasukkasappaṭibhāgā dhammā.

There are wholesome and unwholesome dhammas, blameworthy and blameless dhammas, inferior and superior dhammas, and dhammas that are dark and bright with their counterparts.

Tattha yonisomanasikārabahulīkāro— ayamāhāro anuppannassa vā dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya pāripūriyā.

In this, appropriate attention is frequently given: this is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen investigation of dhamma enlightenment factor, or for the development and completion of arisen investigation of dhamma enlightenment factor.

Ko ca, bhikkhave, āhāro anuppannassa vā vīriyasambojjhaṅgassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā vīriyasambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya pāripūriyā?

And what is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen energy enlightenment factor, or for the development and completion of arisen energy enlightenment factor?

Atthi, bhikkhave, ārambhadhātu nikkamadhātu parakkamadhātu.

There are the elements of initiative, exertion, and endeavor.

Tattha yonisomanasikārabahulīkāro— ayamāhāro anuppannassa vā vīriyasambojjhaṅgassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā vīriyasambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya pāripūriyā.

In this, appropriate attention is frequently given: this is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen energy enlightenment factor, or for the development and completion of arisen energy enlightenment factor.

Ko ca, bhikkhave, āhāro anuppannassa vā pītisambojjhaṅgassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā pītisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya pāripūriyā?

And what is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen joy enlightenment factor, or for the development and completion of arisen joy enlightenment factor?

Atthi, bhikkhave, pītisambojjhaṅgaṭṭhānīyā dhammā.

There are things that are the basis for the joy enlightenment factor.

Tattha yonisomanasikārabahulīkāro— ayamāhāro anuppannassa vā pītisambojjhaṅgassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā pītisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya pāripūriyā.

In this, appropriate attention is frequently given: this is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen joy enlightenment factor, or for the development and completion of arisen joy enlightenment factor.

Ko ca, bhikkhave, āhāro anuppannassa vā passaddhisambojjhaṅgassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā passaddhisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya pāripūriyā?

And what is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen tranquility enlightenment factor, or for the development and completion of arisen tranquility enlightenment factor?

Atthi, bhikkhave, kāyapassaddhi, cittapassaddhi.

There are tranquility of body and tranquility of mind.

Tattha yonisomanasikārabahulīkāro— ayamāhāro anuppannassa vā passaddhisambojjhaṅgassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā passaddhisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya pāripūriyā.

In this, appropriate attention is frequently given: this is the nourishment for the arising of unarisen tranquility enlightenment factor, or for the development and completion of arisen tranquility enlightenment factor.

Ko ca, bhikkhave, āhāro anuppannassa vā samādhisambojjhaṅgassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā samādhisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya pāripūriyā?

And what is the nourishment for the arising of the not yet arisen concentration enlightenment factor, or for the development and fulfillment of the arisen concentration enlightenment factor?

Atthi, bhikkhave, samathanimittaṁ abyagganimittaṁ.

Disciples, there is a sign of concentration, a sign of non-distraction.

Tattha yonisomanasikārabahulīkāro— ayamāhāro anuppannassa vā samādhisambojjhaṅgassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā samādhisambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya pāripūriyā.

Here, frequent wise attention: this is the nourishment for the arising of the not yet arisen concentration enlightenment factor, or for the development and fulfillment of the arisen concentration enlightenment factor.

Ko ca, bhikkhave, āhāro anuppannassa vā upekkhāsambojjhaṅgassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā upekkhāsambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya pāripūriyā?

And what is the nourishment for the arising of the not yet arisen equanimity enlightenment factor, or for the development and fulfillment of the arisen equanimity enlightenment factor?

Atthi, bhikkhave, upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṭṭhānīyā dhammā.

Disciples, there are states conducive to the equanimity enlightenment factor.

Tattha yonisomanasikārabahulīkāro— ayamāhāro anuppannassa vā upekkhāsambojjhaṅgassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā upekkhāsambojjhaṅgassa bhāvanāya pāripūriyā.

Frequent wise attention: this is the nourishment for the arising of the not yet arisen equanimity enlightenment factor, or for the development and fulfillment of the arisen equanimity enlightenment factor.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ayaṁ kāyo āhāraṭṭhitiko, āhāraṁ paṭicca tiṭṭhati, anāhāro no tiṭṭhati; evameva kho, bhikkhave, ime satta bojjhaṅgā āhāraṭṭhitikā, āhāraṁ paṭicca tiṭṭhanti, anāhārā no tiṭṭhantī”ti. Dutiyaṁ.

Just as this body is sustained by food, stands dependent on food, and does not stand without food; in the same way these seven factors of enlightenment are sustained by nourishment, stand dependent on nourishment, and do not stand without nourishment.
