The Discourse on the Threefold Abandonment

Cakkavattivagga Vidhāsutta Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Originating in Sāvatthi.

“Ye hi keci, bhikkhave, atītamaddhānaṁ samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā tisso vidhā pajahiṁsu, sabbe te sattannaṁ bojjhaṅgānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā.

Disciples, whoever in the past, whether ascetics or brahmins, abandoned the threefold, all of them did so because they had developed and cultivated the seven factors of enlightenment.

Ye hi keci, bhikkhave, anāgatamaddhānaṁ samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā tisso vidhā pajahissanti, sabbe te sattannaṁ bojjhaṅgānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā.

Whoever in the future, whether ascetics or brahmins, will abandon the threefold, all of them will do so because they will have developed and cultivated the seven factors of enlightenment.

Ye hi keci, bhikkhave, etarahi samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā tisso vidhā pajahanti, sabbe te sattannaṁ bojjhaṅgānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā.

Whoever at present, whether ascetics or brahmins, abandon the threefold, all of them do so because they have developed and cultivated the seven factors of enlightenment.

Katamesaṁ sattannaṁ bojjhaṅgānaṁ?

What are these seven factors of enlightenment?

Satisambojjhaṅgassa …pe…

The enlightenment factor of mindfulness...

upekkhāsambojjhaṅgassa.

up to... the enlightenment factor of equanimity.

Ye hi keci, bhikkhave, atītamaddhānaṁ samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā tisso vidhā pajahiṁsu …pe…

Disciples, whoever in the past, whether ascetics or brahmins, abandoned the threefold...

will abandon...

pajahanti, sabbe te imesaṁyeva sattannaṁ bojjhaṅgānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā”ti. Paṭhamaṁ.

abandon, all of them did so because they had developed and cultivated these very seven factors of enlightenment.
