Byasanasutta

Gilānavagga Byasanasutta “Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, byasanāni.

Disciples, there are these five misfortunes.

Katamāni pañca?

What are the five?

Ñātibyasanaṁ, bhogabyasanaṁ, rogabyasanaṁ, sīlabyasanaṁ, diṭṭhibyasanaṁ.

The misfortune of relatives, the misfortune of wealth, the misfortune of illness, the misfortune of virtue, and the misfortune of views.

Na, bhikkhave, sattā ñātibyasanahetu vā bhogabyasanahetu vā rogabyasanahetu vā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjanti.

Disciples, beings do not, on account of the misfortune of relatives, wealth, or illness, after the breaking up of the body, after death, fall into a state of woe, a bad destination, a lower realm, hell.

Sīlabyasanahetu vā, bhikkhave, sattā diṭṭhibyasanahetu vā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjanti.

But on account of the misfortune of virtue or the misfortune of views, beings do fall into a state of woe, a bad destination, a lower realm, hell.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañca byasanāni.

These are the five misfortunes.

Pañcimā, bhikkhave, sampadā.

Disciples, there are these five accomplishments.

Katamā pañca?

What are the five?

Ñātisampadā, bhogasampadā, ārogyasampadā, sīlasampadā, diṭṭhisampadā. Na, bhikkhave, sattā ñātisampadāhetu vā bhogasampadāhetu vā ārogyasampadāhetu vā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjanti. Sīlasampadāhetu vā, bhikkhave, sattā diṭṭhisampadāhetu vā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjanti.

The accomplishment of relatives, the accomplishment of wealth, the accomplishment of health, the accomplishment of virtue, and the accomplishment of views.

Disciples, beings do not, on account of the accomplishment of relatives, wealth, or health, after the breaking up of the body, after death, arise in a good destination, a heavenly world.

Imā kho, bhikkhave, pañca sampadā”ti. Dasamaṁ. Gilānavaggo tatiyo. Tassuddānaṁ Gilāno satisūpaṭṭhi, Dve upaṭṭhākā duvāyusā; Vapakāsasamaṇasukhā, Parikuppaṁ byasanena cāti.

But on account of the accomplishment of virtue or the accomplishment of views, beings do arise in a good destination, a heavenly world.

These are the five accomplishments.
