Tikaṇḍakīsutta

Tikaṇḍakīvagga Tikaṇḍakīsutta Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sākete viharati tikaṇḍakīvane.

Once, the Blessed One was residing in Sāketa at the Tikaṇḍakī Forest.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “bhikkhavo”ti.

There, the Blessed One addressed the disciples, Disciples.

“Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.

Venerable Sir, they replied to the Blessed One.

Bhagavā etadavoca: “Sādhu, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kālena kālaṁ appaṭikūle paṭikūlasaññī vihareyya.

The Blessed One said this, It is good that a disciple should at times dwell perceiving the agreeable as disagreeable.

Sādhu, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kālena kālaṁ paṭikūle appaṭikūlasaññī vihareyya.

It is good that a disciple should at times dwell perceiving the disagreeable as agreeable.

Sādhu, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kālena kālaṁ appaṭikūle ca paṭikūle ca paṭikūlasaññī vihareyya.

It is good that a disciple should at times dwell perceiving both the agreeable and the disagreeable as disagreeable.

Sādhu, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kālena kālaṁ paṭikūle ca appaṭikūle ca appaṭikūlasaññī vihareyya.

It is good that a disciple should at times dwell perceiving both the disagreeable and the agreeable as agreeable.

Sādhu, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kālena kālaṁ paṭikūlañca appaṭikūlañca tadubhayaṁ abhinivajjetvā upekkhako vihareyya sato sampajāno.

It is good that a disciple should at times abide, avoiding both the agreeable and the disagreeable, with equanimity, mindful and aware.

Kiñca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṁ paṭicca appaṭikūle paṭikūlasaññī vihareyya?

And what is the reason for a disciple to dwell perceiving the agreeable as disagreeable?

‘Mā me rajanīyesu dhammesu rāgo udapādī’ti— idaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṁ paṭicca appaṭikūle paṭikūlasaññī vihareyya.

‘So that greed might not arise in me for phenomena inducing greed:this is the reason for a disciple to dwell perceiving the agreeable as disagreeable.

Kiñca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṁ paṭicca paṭikūle appaṭikūlasaññī vihareyya?

And what is the reason for a disciple to dwell perceiving the disagreeable as agreeable?

‘Mā me dosanīyesu dhammesu doso udapādī’ti— idaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṁ paṭicca paṭikūle appaṭikūlasaññī vihareyya.

‘So that aversion might not arise in me for phenomena inducing aversion:this is the reason for a disciple to dwell perceiving the disagreeable as agreeable.

Kiñca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṁ paṭicca appaṭikūle ca paṭikūle ca paṭikūlasaññī vihareyya?

And what is the reason for a disciple to dwell perceiving both the agreeable and the disagreeable as disagreeable?

‘Mā me rajanīyesu dhammesu rāgo udapādi, mā me dosanīyesu dhammesu doso udapādī’ti— idaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṁ paṭicca appaṭikūle ca paṭikūle ca paṭikūlasaññī vihareyya.

‘So that neither greed might arise in me for phenomena inducing greed, nor aversion might arise in me for phenomena inducing aversion:this is the reason for a disciple to dwell perceiving both the agreeable and the disagreeable as disagreeable.

Kiñca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṁ paṭicca paṭikūle ca appaṭikūle ca appaṭikūlasaññī vihareyya?

And what is the reason for a disciple to dwell perceiving both the disagreeable and the agreeable as agreeable?

‘Mā me dosanīyesu dhammesu doso udapādi, mā me rajanīyesu dhammesu rāgo udapādī’ti— idaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṁ paṭicca paṭikūle ca appaṭikūle ca appaṭikūlasaññī vihareyya.

‘So that neither aversion might arise in me for phenomena inducing aversion, nor greed might arise in me for phenomena inducing greed:this is the reason for a disciple to dwell perceiving both the disagreeable and the agreeable as agreeable.

Kiñca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṁ paṭicca paṭikūlañca appaṭikūlañca tadubhayaṁ abhinivajjetvā upekkhako vihareyya?

And what is the reason for a disciple to abide, avoiding both the agreeable and the disagreeable, with equanimity?

‘Sato sampajāno mā me kvacani katthaci kiñcanaṁ rajanīyesu dhammesu rāgo udapādi, mā me kvacani katthaci kiñcanaṁ dosanīyesu dhammesu doso udapādi, mā me kvacani katthaci kiñcanaṁ mohanīyesu dhammesu moho udapādī’ti— idaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthavasaṁ paṭicca paṭikūlañca appaṭikūlañca tadubhayaṁ abhinivajjetvā upekkhako vihareyya sato sampajāno”ti. Catutthaṁ.

Mindful and fully aware, So that neither might any attachment arise in me anywhere at all for phenomena inducing greed, nor aversion arise for phenomena inducing aversion, nor delusion arise for phenomena inducing delusion.

Disciples, having known the advantages, a disciple should dwell with equanimity, avoiding both the agreeable and the disagreeable, mindful and clearly knowing.
