Yodhājīvavagga - The Discourse on Future Dangers

Yodhājīvavagga Tatiyaanāgatabhayasutta “Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, anāgatabhayāni etarahi asamuppannāni āyatiṁ samuppajjissanti.

Disciples, there are five future fears that are not yet arisen but will arise in the future.

Tāni vo paṭibujjhitabbāni; paṭibujjhitvā ca tesaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

These should be known by you; having known them, you should strive to abandon them.

Katamāni pañca?

What are the five?

Bhavissanti, bhikkhave, bhikkhū anāgatamaddhānaṁ abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

There will be disciples who, in the future, will have an undeveloped body, undeveloped virtue, undeveloped mind, and undeveloped wisdom.

Te abhāvitakāyā samānā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā aññe upasampādessanti. Tepi na sakkhissanti vinetuṁ adhisīle adhicitte adhipaññāya.

Those with undeveloped bodies, similar in nature, with undeveloped virtue, undeveloped minds, and undeveloped wisdom, will not be able to guide others with superior conduct, superior mind, or superior wisdom.

Tepi bhavissanti abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā. Te abhāvitakāyā samānā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā aññe upasampādessanti. Tepi na sakkhissanti vinetuṁ adhisīle adhicitte adhipaññāya.

They will also be disciples with undeveloped bodies, undeveloped virtue, undeveloped minds, and undeveloped wisdom.

Thus the teachings are profound, and the discipline is profound; the discipline is profound, and the teachings are profound.

Tepi bhavissanti abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

This is the first future fear that is not yet arisen but will arise in the future.

Iti kho, bhikkhave, dhammasandosā vinayasandoso; vinayasandosā dhammasandoso.

This should be known by you; having known it, you should strive to abandon it.

Idaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ etarahi asamuppannaṁ āyatiṁ samuppajjissati. Taṁ vo paṭibujjhitabbaṁ; paṭibujjhitvā ca tassa pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

Furthermore there will be disciples who, in the future, will have an undeveloped body, undeveloped virtue, undeveloped mind, and undeveloped wisdom.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhavissanti bhikkhū anāgatamaddhānaṁ abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

Those with undeveloped bodies, similar in nature, with undeveloped virtue, undeveloped minds, and undeveloped wisdom, will show dependence on others.

Te abhāvitakāyā samānā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā aññesaṁ nissayaṁ dassanti.

They will not be able to guide others with superior conduct, superior mind, or superior wisdom.

Tepi na sakkhissanti vinetuṁ adhisīle adhicitte adhipaññāya. Tepi bhavissanti abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

They will also be disciples with undeveloped bodies, undeveloped virtue, undeveloped minds, and undeveloped wisdom.

Te abhāvitakāyā samānā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā aññesaṁ nissayaṁ dassanti.

Thus the teachings are profound, and the discipline is profound; the discipline is profound, and the teachings are profound.

Tepi na sakkhissanti vinetuṁ adhisīle adhicitte adhipaññāya.

This is the second future fear that is not yet arisen but will arise in the future.

Tepi bhavissanti abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

This should be known by you; having known it, you should strive to abandon it.

Iti kho, bhikkhave, dhammasandosā vinayasandoso; vinayasandosā dhammasandoso. Idaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ etarahi asamuppannaṁ āyatiṁ samuppajjissati.

Furthermore there will be disciples who, in the future, will have an undeveloped body, undeveloped virtue, undeveloped mind, and undeveloped wisdom.

Taṁ vo paṭibujjhitabbaṁ; paṭibujjhitvā ca tassa pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ. Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhavissanti bhikkhū anāgatamaddhānaṁ abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

Those with undeveloped bodies, similar in nature, with undeveloped virtue, undeveloped minds, and undeveloped wisdom, while discussing the Dhamma and the Vinaya, will not know the profound teachings that they encounter.

Te abhāvitakāyā samānā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā abhidhammakathaṁ vedallakathaṁ kathentā kaṇhadhammaṁ okkamamānā na bujjhissanti.

Thus the teachings are delightful, and the discipline is delightful; the discipline is delightful, and the teachings are delightful.

Iti kho, bhikkhave, dhammasandosā vinayasandoso; vinayasandosā dhammasandoso.

This is the third future danger that has not yet arisen, which will arise in the future.

Idaṁ, bhikkhave, tatiyaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ etarahi asamuppannaṁ āyatiṁ samuppajjissati. Taṁ vo paṭibujjhitabbaṁ; paṭibujjhitvā ca tassa pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

You should be aware of it; having been aware, you should strive to abandon it.

Furthermore there will be disciples in the future who are undeveloped in body, undeveloped in virtue, undeveloped in mind, and undeveloped in wisdom.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhavissanti bhikkhū anāgatamaddhānaṁ abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

These disciples, being undeveloped in body, will be similar in their undeveloped virtue, undeveloped mind, and undeveloped wisdom.

When the profound discourses spoken by the Tathagata, which are deep in meaning, transcendent, and connected to emptiness, are being discussed, they will not listen, will not open their ears, will not establish their minds on anything else, and will not consider those teachings worthy of being learned or known.

Ye pana te suttantā kavitā kāveyyā cittakkharā cittabyañjanā bāhirakā sāvakabhāsitā, tesu bhaññamānesu sussūsissanti, sotaṁ odahissanti, aññā cittaṁ upaṭṭhapessanti, te ca dhamme uggahetabbaṁ pariyāpuṇitabbaṁ maññissanti.

On the other hand, those discourses that are poetic, well-structured, with clear expressions and external meanings, spoken by the disciples, will be listened to, their ears will be opened, their minds will be established on them, and they will consider those teachings worthy of being learned and known.

Iti kho, bhikkhave, dhammasandosā vinayasandoso; vinayasandosā dhammasandoso.

Thus the teachings are delightful, and the discipline is delightful; the discipline is delightful, and the teachings are delightful.

Idaṁ, bhikkhave, catutthaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ etarahi asamuppannaṁ āyatiṁ samuppajjissati.

This is the fourth future danger that has not yet arisen, which will arise in the future.

Taṁ vo paṭibujjhitabbaṁ; paṭibujjhitvā ca tassa pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

You should be aware of it; having been aware, you should strive to abandon it.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhavissanti bhikkhū anāgatamaddhānaṁ abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

Furthermore there will be disciples in the future who are undeveloped in body, undeveloped in virtue, undeveloped in mind, and undeveloped in wisdom.

Te abhāvitakāyā samānā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā therā bhikkhū bāhulikā bhavissanti sāthalikā okkamane pubbaṅgamā paviveke nikkhittadhurā, na vīriyaṁ ārabhissanti appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāya.

These disciples, being undeveloped in body, will be similar in their undeveloped virtue, undeveloped mind, and undeveloped wisdom. The elder disciples will be numerous, unrefined, and will not strive for the attainment of what is not yet attained, for the realization of what is not yet realized, and for the verification of what is not yet verified.

Tesaṁ pacchimā janatā diṭṭhānugatiṁ āpajjissati.

The later generations will follow their views.

Sāpi bhavissati bāhulikā sāthalikā okkamane pubbaṅgamā paviveke nikkhittadhurā, na vīriyaṁ ārabhissati appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāya.

They too will be numerous, unrefined, and will not strive for the attainment of what is not yet attained, for the realization of what is not yet realized, and for the verification of what is not yet verified.

Iti kho, bhikkhave, dhammasandosā vinayasandoso; vinayasandosā dhammasandoso. Idaṁ, bhikkhave, pañcamaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ etarahi asamuppannaṁ āyatiṁ samuppajjissati.

Thus the teachings are delightful, and the discipline is delightful; the discipline is delightful, and the teachings are delightful.

Taṁ vo paṭibujjhitabbaṁ; paṭibujjhitvā ca tassa pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

This is the fifth future danger that has not yet arisen, which will arise in the future.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañca anāgatabhayāni etarahi asamuppannāni āyatiṁ samuppajjissanti.

You should be aware of it; having been aware, you should strive to abandon it.

Tāni vo paṭibujjhitabbāni; paṭibujjhitvā ca tesaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabban”ti. Navamaṁ.

These are the five future dangers that have not yet arisen, which will arise in the future.
