Arakkheyyasutta

Abyākatavagga Arakkheyyasutta “Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa arakkheyyāni, tīhi ca anupavajjo.

Disciples, there are four things the Tathāgata must protect, and by three he is blameless.

Katamāni cattāri tathāgatassa arakkheyyāni?

What are the four things the Tathāgata must protect?

Parisuddhakāyasamācāro, bhikkhave, tathāgato; natthi tathāgatassa kāyaduccaritaṁ yaṁ tathāgato rakkheyya: ‘mā me idaṁ paro aññāsī’ti.

Disciples, the Tathāgata has pure bodily conduct; there is no bad bodily conduct for the Tathāgata to hide, thinking: May others not know this about me.

Parisuddhavacīsamācāro, bhikkhave, tathāgato; natthi tathāgatassa vacīduccaritaṁ yaṁ tathāgato rakkheyya: ‘mā me idaṁ paro aññāsī’ti.

The Tathāgata has pure verbal conduct; there is no bad verbal conduct for the Tathāgata to hide, thinking: May others not know this about me.

Parisuddhamanosamācāro, bhikkhave, tathāgato; natthi tathāgatassa manoduccaritaṁ yaṁ tathāgato rakkheyya: ‘mā me idaṁ paro aññāsī’ti.

The Tathāgata has pure mental conduct; there is no bad mental conduct for the Tathāgata to hide, thinking: May others not know this about me.

Parisuddhājīvo, bhikkhave, tathāgato; natthi tathāgatassa micchāājīvo yaṁ tathāgato rakkheyya: ‘mā me idaṁ paro aññāsī’ti.

The Tathāgata has a pure livelihood; there is no wrong livelihood for the Tathāgata to hide, thinking: May others not know this about me.

Imāni cattāri tathāgatassa arakkheyyāni.

These are the four things the Tathāgata must protect.

Katamehi tīhi anupavajjo? Svākkhātadhammo, bhikkhave, tathāgato.

What are the three by which he is blameless?

Tatra vata maṁ samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā devo vā māro vā brahmā vā koci vā lokasmiṁ sahadhammena paṭicodessati: ‘itipi tvaṁ na svākkhātadhammo’ti. Nimittametaṁ, bhikkhave, na samanupassāmi. Etamahaṁ, bhikkhave, nimittaṁ asamanupassanto khemappatto abhayappatto vesārajjappatto viharāmi.

Disciples, the Tathāgata has well-proclaimed the Dhamma. It is impossible that any ascetic, brahmin, deity, Māra, Brahmā, or anyone in the world could rightly accuse me of not having well-proclaimed the Dhamma.

Supaññattā kho pana me, bhikkhave, sāvakānaṁ nibbānagāminī paṭipadā.

Seeing no such reason I dwell secure, fearless, and confident.

Yathāpaṭipannā mama sāvakā āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharanti. Tatra vata maṁ samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā devo vā māro vā brahmā vā koci vā lokasmiṁ sahadhammena paṭicodessati: ‘itipi te na supaññattā sāvakānaṁ nibbānagāminī paṭipadā.

Moreover the path leading to Nibbāna for my disciples is well-explained. My disciples practice accordingly and, realizing through direct knowing, they dwell having attained the destruction of the āsavas, mental liberation, and wisdom liberation in this very life.

Yathāpaṭipannā tava sāvakā āsavānaṁ khayā …pe… sacchikatvā upasampajja viharantī’ti. Nimittametaṁ, bhikkhave, na samanupassāmi. Etamahaṁ, bhikkhave, nimittaṁ asamanupassanto khemappatto abhayappatto vesārajjappatto viharāmi.

It is impossible that any ascetic, brahmin, deity, Māra, Brahmā, or anyone in the world could rightly accuse me regarding the path leading to Nibbāna for my disciples and their practice.

Anekasatā kho pana me, bhikkhave, sāvakaparisā āsavānaṁ khayā …pe… sacchikatvā upasampajja viharanti. Tatra vata maṁ samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā devo vā māro vā brahmā vā koci vā lokasmiṁ sahadhammena paṭicodessati: ‘itipi te na anekasatā sāvakaparisā āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharantī’ti. Nimittametaṁ, bhikkhave, na samanupassāmi.

Furthermore many hundreds of my disciple assembly dwell having attained the destruction of the āsavas, mental liberation, and wisdom liberation in this very life. It is impossible that any ascetic, brahmin, deity, Māra, Brahmā, or anyone in the world could rightly accuse me regarding the many hundreds in my disciple assembly.

Etamahaṁ, bhikkhave, nimittaṁ asamanupassanto khemappatto abhayappatto vesārajjappatto viharāmi.

Seeing no such reason I dwell secure, fearless, and confident.

Imehi tīhi anupavajjo.

By these three, I am blameless.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri tathāgatassa arakkheyyāni, imehi ca tīhi anupavajjo”ti. Pañcamaṁ.

These are the four things the Tathāgata must protect, and by these three, he is blameless.
