Saṅkhittasutta

Gotamīvagga Saṅkhittasutta Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ.

At one time, the Blessed One was staying in Vesālī, in the Great Wood, at the Hall with the Peaked Roof.

Atha kho mahāpajāpatī gotamī yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.

Then Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, and stood to one side.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā mahāpajāpatī gotamī bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “Sādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saṅkhittena dhammaṁ desetu, yamahaṁ bhagavato dhammaṁ sutvā ekā vūpakaṭṭhā appamattā ātāpinī pahitattā vihareyyan”ti.

Standing to one side, Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī said to the Blessed One: Venerable sir, it would be good if the Blessed One would teach me the Dhamma in brief, so that having heard the Blessed Ones Dhamma, I may dwell alone, withdrawn, diligent, ardent, and resolute.

“Ye kho tvaṁ, gotami, dhamme jāneyyāsi: ‘ime dhammā sarāgāya saṁvattanti, no virāgāya; saṁyogāya saṁvattanti, no visaṁyogāya; ācayāya saṁvattanti, no apacayāya; mahicchatāya saṁvattanti, no appicchatāya; asantuṭṭhiyā saṁvattanti, no santuṭṭhiyā; saṅgaṇikāya saṁvattanti, no pavivekāya; kosajjāya saṁvattanti, no vīriyārambhāya; dubbharatāya saṁvattanti, no subharatāyā’ti, ekaṁsena, gotami, dhāreyyāsi: ‘neso dhammo, neso vinayo, netaṁ satthusāsanan’ti.

The Blessed One replied: Gotamī, you should know those things that lead to passion, not to dispassion; to bondage, not to detachment; to accumulation, not to diminishment; to great desires, not to few desires; to discontent, not to contentment; to association, not to seclusion; to laziness, not to arousal of energy; to being difficult to support, not to being easy to support. You should definitely consider: This is not the Dhamma, this is not the discipline, this is not the Teachers instruction.

Ye ca kho tvaṁ, gotami, dhamme jāneyyāsi: ‘ime dhammā virāgāya saṁvattanti, no sarāgāya; visaṁyogāya saṁvattanti, no saṁyogāya; apacayāya saṁvattanti, no ācayāya; appicchatāya saṁvattanti, no mahicchatāya; santuṭṭhiyā saṁvattanti, no asantuṭṭhiyā; pavivekāya saṁvattanti, no saṅgaṇikāya; vīriyārambhāya saṁvattanti, no kosajjāya; subharatāya saṁvattanti, no dubbharatāyā’ti, ekaṁsena, gotami, dhāreyyāsi: ‘eso dhammo, eso vinayo, etaṁ satthusāsanan’”ti. Tatiyaṁ.

The Blessed One continued: But you should know those things that lead to dispassion, not to passion; to detachment, not to bondage; to diminishment, not to accumulation; to few desires, not to great desires; to contentment, not to discontent; to seclusion, not to association; to arousal of energy, not to laziness; to being easy to support, not to being difficult to support.
