Saṅkhittasutta

Bhūmicālavagga Saṅkhittasutta Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “sādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saṅkhittena dhammaṁ desetu, yamahaṁ bhagavato dhammaṁ sutvā eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto vihareyyan”ti.

In this way, a certain disciple approached the Blessed One, sat down to one side, and said to him, Venerable sir, may the Blessed One please teach me the Dhamma in brief, so that having heard the Blessed One's Dhamma, I may dwell alone, withdrawn, diligent, ardent, and resolute.

“Evamevaṁ panidhekacce moghapurisā mamaññeva ajjhesanti.

Thus some foolish persons ask of me alone.

Dhamme ca bhāsite mamaññeva anubandhitabbaṁ maññantī”ti.

Having heard the Dhamma, they think they should follow only me.

“Desetu me, bhante, bhagavā saṅkhittena dhammaṁ, desetu sugato saṅkhittena dhammaṁ.

Teach me, Venerable Sir, the Dhamma in brief. Teach me, Blessed One, the Dhamma in brief.

Appeva nāmāhaṁ bhagavato bhāsitassa atthaṁ ājāneyyaṁ, appeva nāmāhaṁ bhagavato bhāsitassa dāyādo assan”ti.

Perhaps I may know the meaning of what the Blessed One has spoken, perhaps I may become an heir to the Blessed One's teaching.

“Tasmātiha te, bhikkhu, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘ajjhattaṁ me cittaṁ ṭhitaṁ bhavissati susaṇṭhitaṁ, na ca uppannā pāpakā akusalā dhammā cittaṁ pariyādāya ṭhassantī’ti.

Therefore, disciple, you should train thus: ‘My mind will be steady, well-established internally, and arisen unskillful unwholesome states will not take hold of and remain in my mind.

Evañhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbaṁ.

It is in this way, disciple, that you should train.

Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ajjhattaṁ cittaṁ ṭhitaṁ hoti susaṇṭhitaṁ, na ca uppannā pāpakā akusalā dhammā cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhanti, tato te, bhikkhu, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘mettā me cetovimutti bhāvitā bhavissati bahulīkatā yānīkatā vatthukatā anuṭṭhitā paricitā susamāraddhā’ti.

When your mind is internally steady, well-established, and arisen unskillful unwholesome states do not take hold and remain, then you should train in this way: My release of mind through goodwill will be developed, cultivated, practiced frequently, made a vehicle and basis, brought to be, consolidated, and properly undertaken.

Evañhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbaṁ.

It is in this way, disciple, that you should train.

Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ayaṁ samādhi evaṁ bhāvito hoti bahulīkato, tato tvaṁ, bhikkhu, imaṁ samādhiṁ savitakkampi savicāraṁ bhāveyyāsi, avitakkampi vicāramattaṁ bhāveyyāsi, avitakkampi avicāraṁ bhāveyyāsi, sappītikampi bhāveyyāsi, nippītikampi bhāveyyāsi, sātasahagatampi bhāveyyāsi, upekkhāsahagatampi bhāveyyāsi.

When this concentration is thus developed, made much of, then you should develop this concentration with initial and sustained application of attention; you should develop it without initial and with only sustained application of attention; you should develop it without initial and sustained application; you should develop it accompanied by pīti; you should develop it without pīti; you should develop it accompanied by joy; you should develop it accompanied by equanimity.

Yato kho, te bhikkhu, ayaṁ samādhi evaṁ bhāvito hoti subhāvito, tato te, bhikkhu, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘karuṇā me cetovimutti …

When this concentration is thus developed, well-developed, then you should train in this way: My release of mind through compassion...

muditā me cetovimutti …

my release of mind through sympathetic joy...

upekkhā me cetovimutti bhāvitā bhavissati bahulīkatā yānīkatā vatthukatā anuṭṭhitā paricitā susamāraddhā’ti.

my release of mind through equanimity will be developed, cultivated, practiced frequently, made a vehicle and basis, brought to be, consolidated, and properly undertaken.

Evañhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbaṁ.

It is in this way, disciple, that you should train.

Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ayaṁ samādhi evaṁ bhāvito hoti subhāvito, tato tvaṁ, bhikkhu, imaṁ samādhiṁ savitakkasavicārampi bhāveyyāsi, avitakkavicāramattampi bhāveyyāsi, avitakkaavicārampi bhāveyyāsi, sappītikampi bhāveyyāsi, nippītikampi bhāveyyāsi, sātasahagatampi bhāveyyāsi, upekkhāsahagatampi bhāveyyāsi.

Disciple, when this concentration is thus developed and well cultivated in you, then you should cultivate this concentration with applied and sustained attention, as well as with mere reflection, and without either; with pīti, and without pīti; accompanied by pleasure, and accompanied by equanimity.

Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ayaṁ samādhi evaṁ bhāvito hoti subhāvito, tato te, bhikkhu, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘kāye kāyānupassī viharissāmi ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassan’ti.

When this concentration is thus developed and well cultivated in you, then, disciple, you should train yourself thus: I will dwell contemplating the body in the body, ardent, fully aware, and mindful, having removed craving and aversion for the world.

Evañhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbaṁ.

Thus should you train yourself, disciple.

Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ayaṁ samādhi evaṁ bhāvito hoti bahulīkato, tato tvaṁ, bhikkhu, imaṁ samādhiṁ savitakkasavicārampi bhāveyyāsi, avitakkavicāramattampi bhāveyyāsi, avitakkaavicārampi bhāveyyāsi, sappītikampi bhāveyyāsi, nippītikampi bhāveyyāsi, sātasahagatampi bhāveyyāsi, upekkhāsahagatampi bhāveyyāsi.

When this concentration is thus developed and frequently practiced in you, disciple, then you should cultivate this concentration with applied and sustained attention, with mere reflection, and without either; with pīti, and without pīti; accompanied by pleasure, and accompanied by equanimity.

Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ayaṁ samādhi evaṁ bhāvito hoti subhāvito, tato te, bhikkhu, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘vedanāsu … citte … dhammesu dhammānupassī viharissāmi ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassan’ti.

When this concentration is thus developed and well cultivated in you, then, disciple, you should train yourself thus: I will dwell contemplating feelings in feelings, mind in mind, phenomena in phenomena, ardent, fully aware, and mindful, having removed craving and aversion for the world.

Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ayaṁ samādhi evaṁ bhāvito hoti subhāvito, tato tvaṁ, bhikkhu, yena yeneva gagghasi phāsuṁyeva gagghasi, yattha yattha ṭhassasi phāsuṁyeva ṭhassasi, yattha yattha nisīdissasi phāsuṁyeva nisīdissasi, yattha yattha seyyaṁ kappessasi phāsuṁyeva seyyaṁ kappessasī”ti.

When this concentration is thus developed and well cultivated in you, then wherever you go, you will go comfortably; wherever you stand, you will stand comfortably; wherever you sit, you will sit comfortably; wherever you lie down, you will lie down comfortably.

Atha kho so bhikkhu bhagavatā iminā ovādena ovadito uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā pakkāmi.

Then that disciple, having been advised with this exhortation by the Blessed One, rose from his seat, bowed to the Blessed One, and departed, keeping him to his right.

Atha kho so bhikkhu eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto nacirasseva—yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraṁ—brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi.

Then that disciple, being secluded, heedful, ardent, and resolute, before long attained the ultimate goal for which sons of good family rightly go forth from the household life into homelessness. He directly realized, reached, and dwelt in the consummation of the holy life in this very life through his own higher knowing.

“Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā”ti abbhaññāsi. Aññataro ca pana so bhikkhu arahataṁ ahosīti. Tatiyaṁ.

He known: Birth is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more of this state of being. And that disciple became one of the arahants.
