Aṅguttara Nikāya 9.27 3.

First Discourse on Hostility

Sattāvāsavagga Paṭhamaverasutta Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.

Then the householder Anathapindika approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side.

Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho anāthapiṇḍikaṁ gahapatiṁ bhagavā etadavoca: “Yato kho, gahapati, ariyasāvakassa pañca bhayāni verāni vūpasantāni honti, catūhi ca sotāpattiyaṅgehi samannāgato hoti, so ākaṅkhamāno attanāva attānaṁ byākareyya: ‘khīṇanirayomhi khīṇatiracchānayoni khīṇapettivisayo khīṇāpāyaduggativinipāto, sotāpannohamasmi avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaṇo’ti.

While sitting to one side, the Blessed One said to the householder Anathapindika:

When the noble disciple has calmed five fears and hostilities, and is endowed with the four factors of stream-entry, he could, if he wished, declare of himself: I am one who has destroyed hell, the animal realm, the realm of ghosts, the state of misery, the bad destinations, the lower realms. I am a stream-enterer, not subject to downfall, assured, bound for full enlightenment.

Katamāni pañca bhayāni verāni vūpasantāni honti?

What are the five fears and hostilities that are calmed?

Yaṁ, gahapati, pāṇātipātī pāṇātipātapaccayā diṭṭhadhammikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, samparāyikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti, pāṇātipātā paṭivirato neva diṭṭhadhammikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, na samparāyikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, na cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.

Householder, when one kills living beings, due to killing living beings, one generates fear and hostility in this life, and fear and hostility in the next life, and experiences mental suffering and distress. But when one abstains from killing living beings, one does not generate fear and hostility in this life, nor in the next life, nor does one experience mental suffering and distress.

Pāṇātipātā paṭiviratassa evaṁ taṁ bhayaṁ veraṁ vūpasantaṁ hoti.

In this way, for one who abstains from killing living beings, that fear and hostility is calmed.

Yaṁ, gahapati, adinnādāyī …pe…

Similarly when one takes what is not given...

kāmesumicchācārī …

engages in sexual misconduct...

musāvādī …

speaks falsehoods...

surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhāyī surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānapaccayā diṭṭhadhammikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, samparāyikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti, surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā paṭivirato neva diṭṭhadhammikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, na samparāyikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, na cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.

indulges in intoxicants, due to indulging in intoxicants, one generates fear and hostility in this life, and fear and hostility in the next life, and experiences mental suffering and distress. But when one abstains from indulging in intoxicants, one does not generate fear and hostility in this life, nor in the next life, nor does one experience mental suffering and distress.

Surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā paṭiviratassa evaṁ taṁ bhayaṁ veraṁ vūpasantaṁ hoti.

In this way, for one who abstains from indulging in intoxicants, that fear and hostility is calmed.

Imāni pañca bhayāni verāni vūpasantāni honti.

These are the five fears and hostilities that are calmed.

“Katamehi catūhi sotāpattiyaṅgehi samannāgato hoti?

With what four factors of stream-entry is one endowed?

Idha, gahapati, ariyasāvako buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti: ‘itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti.

Here the noble disciple is endowed with unwavering confidence in the Tathāgata: The Blessed One is an Arahant, perfectly enlightened, accomplished in true knowing and conduct, fortunate, knower of the worlds, unsurpassed leader of persons to be tamed, teacher of gods and humans, the Enlightened One, the Blessed One.

Dhamme aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti: ‘svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo sandiṭṭhiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhī’ti.

Endowed with unwavering confidence in the Dhamma: The Dhamma is well expounded by the Blessed One, directly visible, immediate, inviting one to come and see, applicable, to be personally experienced by the wise.

Saṅghe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti: ‘suppaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho ujuppaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho ñāyappaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho sāmīcippaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho; yadidaṁ cattāri purisayugāni aṭṭha purisapuggalā esa bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiṇeyyo añjalikaraṇīyo anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassā’ti.

Endowed with unwavaring confidence in the Sangha...

The community of disciples of the Blessed One is well-practiced, the community of disciples of the Blessed One is uprightly practiced, the community of disciples of the Blessed One is rightly practiced, the community of disciples of the Blessed One is properly practiced; namely, the four pairs of persons, the eight types of individuals, this community of disciples of the Blessed One is worthy of offerings, worthy of hospitality, worthy of gifts, worthy of reverential salutation, the unsurpassed field of merit for the world.

Ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgato hoti akhaṇḍehi acchiddehi asabalehi akammāsehi bhujissehi viññuppasatthehi aparāmaṭṭhehi samādhisaṁvattanikehi.

He is endowed with virtues dear to the noble ones, unbroken, untorn, unblemished, unspotted, liberating, praised by the wise, not misapprehended, conducive to concentration.

Imehi catūhi sotāpattiyaṅgehi samannāgato hoti.

He is endowed with these four factors of stream-entry.

Yato kho, gahapati, ariyasāvakassa imāni pañca bhayāni verāni vūpasantāni honti, imehi ca catūhi sotāpattiyaṅgehi samannāgato hoti, so ākaṅkhamāno attanāva attānaṁ byākareyya: ‘khīṇanirayomhi khīṇatiracchānayoni khīṇapettivisayo khīṇāpāyaduggativinipāto; sotāpannohamasmi avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaṇo’”ti. Sattamaṁ.

When the noble disciple has calmed these five fears and hostilities, and is endowed with these four factors of stream-entry, he could, if he wished, declare of himself: I am one who has destroyed hell, destroyed the animal realm, destroyed the realm of ghosts, destroyed the plane of misery, the bad destinations, the lower realms; I am a stream-enterer, not subject to downfall, assured, bound for full enlightenment.
