Sambādhasutta

Sāmaññavagga Sambādhasutta Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā ānando kosambiyaṁ viharati ghositārāme.

At one time, Venerable Ānanda was staying in Kosambi, in Ghosita's Monastery.

Atha kho āyasmā udāyī yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā ānandena saddhiṁ sammodi.

Then Venerable Udāyī approached Venerable Ānanda; having approached, he exchanged greetings with Venerable Ānanda.

Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.

After exchanging greetings and cordial talk, he sat down to one side.

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā udāyī āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ etadavoca: “vuttamidaṁ, āvuso, pañcālacaṇḍena devaputtena: ‘Sambādhe gataṁ okāsaṁ, Avidvā bhūrimedhaso; Yo jhānamabujjhi buddho, Paṭilīnanisabho munī’ti.

Sitting to one side, Venerable Udāyī said to Venerable Ānanda:

It has been said, friend, by the deva Pancālacanda:

In the midst of confinement, a space has been found, by the wise one, the great sage; who awakened to jhāna, the secluded bull, the sage.

Katamo, āvuso, sambādho, katamo sambādhe okāsādhigamo vutto bhagavatā”ti?

What, friend, is the confinement, and what is the space found in the midst of confinement, as spoken of by the Blessed One?

“Pañcime, āvuso, kāmaguṇā sambādho vutto bhagavatā.

Friend, the five strands of sense satisfaction are spoken of by the Blessed One as confinement.

Katame pañca?

What are the five?

Cakkhuviññeyyā rūpā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā, sotaviññeyyā saddā …pe…

Forms cognizable by the eye that are wished for, desired, agreeable, and endearing, associated with sense satisfaction, and provocative of greed; sounds cognizable by the ear...

ghānaviññeyyā gandhā …

odors cognizable by the nose...

jivhāviññeyyā rasā …

flavors cognizable by the tongue...

kāyaviññeyyā phoṭṭhabbā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā.

tangibles cognizable by the body that are wished for, desired, agreeable, and endearing, associated with sense satisfaction, and provocative of greed.

Ime kho, āvuso, pañca kāmaguṇā sambādho vutto bhagavatā.

These, friend, are the five strands of sense satisfaction spoken of by the Blessed One as confinement.

Idhāvuso, bhikkhu vivicceva kāmehi …pe…

Here, friend, a disciple, quite secluded from sensual pleasures...

paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati.

enters and dwells in the first jhāna.

Ettāvatāpi kho, āvuso, sambādhe okāsādhigamo vutto bhagavatā pariyāyena.

To this extent, friend, the space found in the midst of confinement is spoken of by the Blessed One in a provisional sense.

Tatrāpatthi sambādho.

There is still confinement there.

Kiñca tattha sambādho?

And what is the confinement there?

Yadeva tattha vitakkavicārā aniruddhā honti, ayamettha sambādho.

It is the presence of directed and sustained attention that is not yet stilled.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu vitakkavicārānaṁ vūpasamā …pe… dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati.

This is the confinement there.

Again, with the subsiding of directed and sustained attention, a disciple enters and dwells in the second jhāna.

Yadeva tattha pīti aniruddhā hoti, ayamettha sambādho.

It is the presence of pīti that is not yet stilled.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu pītiyā ca virāgā …pe… tatiyaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati.

This is the confinement there.

Again, with the fading away of pīti, a disciple enters and dwells in the third jhāna.

Yadeva tattha upekkhāsukhaṁ aniruddhaṁ hoti, ayamettha sambādho.

It is the presence of equanimity and pleasure that are not yet stilled.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu sukhassa ca pahānā …pe… catutthaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati.

This is the confinement there.

Again, with the abandoning of pleasure and pain, a disciple enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna.

Yadeva tattha rūpasaññā aniruddhā hoti, ayamettha sambādho.

It is the presence of perception of form that is not yet stilled. This is the confinement there.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu sabbaso rūpasaññānaṁ samatikkamā paṭighasaññānaṁ atthaṅgamā nānattasaññānaṁ amanasikārā ‘ananto ākāso’ti ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ upasampajja viharati.

Again, by completely transcending perceptions of form, with the disappearance of perceptions of sensory impact, and with non-attention to perceptions of diversity, aware that space is infinite, a disciple enters and dwells in the realm of infinite space.

Yadeva tattha ākāsānañcāyatanasaññā aniruddhā hoti, ayamettha sambādho.

It is the presence of the perception of the realm of infinite space that is not yet stilled.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu sabbaso ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ samatikkamma ‘anantaṁ viññāṇan’ti viññāṇañcāyatanaṁ upasampajja viharati.

This is the confinement there.

Again, by completely transcending the realm of infinite space, aware that consciousness is infinite, a disciple enters and dwells in the realm of infinite consciousness.

Yadeva tattha viññāṇañcāyatanasaññā aniruddhā hoti, ayamettha sambādho.

It is the presence of the perception of the realm of infinite consciousness that is not yet stilled.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu sabbaso viññāṇañcāyatanaṁ samatikkamma ‘natthi kiñcī’ti ākiñcaññāyatanaṁ upasampajja viharati.

This is the confinement there.

Again, by completely transcending the realm of infinite consciousness, aware that there is nothing, a disciple enters and dwells in the realm of nothingness.

Yadeva tattha ākiñcaññāyatanasaññā aniruddhā hoti, ayamettha sambādho.

It is the presence of the perception of the realm of nothingness that is not yet stilled.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu sabbaso ākiñcaññāyatanaṁ samatikkamma nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṁ upasampajja viharati.

This is the confinement there.

Again, by completely transcending the realm of nothingness, a disciple enters and dwells in the realm of neither-perception-nor-non-perception.

Yadeva tattha nevasaññānāsaññāyatanasaññā aniruddhā hoti, ayamettha sambādho.

It is the presence of the perception of the realm of neither-perception-nor-non-perception that is not yet stilled.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu sabbaso nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṁ samatikkamma saññāvedayitanirodhaṁ upasampajja viharati, paññāya cassa disvā āsavā parikkhīṇā honti.

This is the confinement there.

Again, by completely transcending the realm of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, a disciple enters and dwells in the cessation of perception and feeling, and having seen with wisdom, his taints are destroyed.

Ettāvatāpi kho, āvuso, sambādhe okāsādhigamo vutto bhagavatā nippariyāyenā”ti. Paṭhamaṁ.

To this extent, friend, the space found in the midst of confinement is spoken of by the Blessed One in a non-provisional sense.
