Dīgha Nikāya 27 Aggaññasutta Evaṁ me sutaṁ— ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati pubbārāme migāramātupāsāde.

Aggañña Sutta

Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was staying in Sāvatthī, at the Eastern Park, in the palace of Migāras mother.

Tena kho pana samayena vāseṭṭhabhāradvājā bhikkhūsu parivasanti bhikkhubhāvaṁ ākaṅkhamānā.

Now at that time, Vāseṭṭha and Bhāradvāja were living among the disciples, desiring to become disciples themselves.

Atha kho bhagavā sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito pāsādā orohitvā pāsādapacchāyāyaṁ abbhokāse caṅkamati.

Then the Blessed One, having emerged from seclusion in the evening, descended from the palace and walked back and forth in the open air in the shade of the palace.

Addasā kho vāseṭṭho bhagavantaṁ sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhitaṁ pāsādā orohitvā pāsādapacchāyāyaṁ abbhokāse caṅkamantaṁ.

Vāseṭṭha saw the Blessed One, having emerged from seclusion in the evening, descending from the palace and walking back and forth in the open air in the shade of the palace.

Disvāna bhāradvājaṁ āmantesi: “ayaṁ, āvuso bhāradvāja, bhagavā sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito pāsādā orohitvā pāsādapacchāyāyaṁ abbhokāse caṅkamati.

Seeing this, he said to Bhāradvāja, Friend Bhāradvāja, the Blessed One has emerged from seclusion in the evening, descended from the palace, and is walking back and forth in the open air in the shade of the palace.

Āyāmāvuso bhāradvāja, yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamissāma; appeva nāma labheyyāma bhagavato santikā dhammiṁ kathaṁ savanāyā”ti.

Come, friend Bhāradvāja, let us approach the Blessed One; perhaps we might hear a Dhamma talk from the Blessed One.

“Evamāvuso”ti kho bhāradvājo vāseṭṭhassa paccassosi.

Very well, friend, Bhāradvāja replied to Vāseṭṭha.

Atha kho vāseṭṭhabhāradvājā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā bhagavantaṁ caṅkamantaṁ anucaṅkamiṁsu.

Then Vāseṭṭha and Bhāradvāja approached the Blessed One; having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and walked alongside him.

Atha kho bhagavā vāseṭṭhaṁ āmantesi: “tumhe khvattha, vāseṭṭha, brāhmaṇajaccā brāhmaṇakulīnā brāhmaṇakulā agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajitā, kacci vo, vāseṭṭha, brāhmaṇā na akkosanti na paribhāsantī”ti?

Then the Blessed One addressed Vāseṭṭha, You, Vāseṭṭha, are born into a Brahmin family, from a lineage of Brahmins, having gone forth from the household life into homelessness. Do the Brahmins not insult and disparage you?

“Taggha no, bhante, brāhmaṇā akkosanti paribhāsanti attarūpāya paribhāsāya paripuṇṇāya, no aparipuṇṇāyā”ti.

Indeed, venerable sir, the Brahmins insult and disparage us with complete and utter disparagement, not with incomplete disparagement.

“Yathā kathaṁ pana vo, vāseṭṭha, brāhmaṇā akkosanti paribhāsanti attarūpāya paribhāsāya paripuṇṇāya, no aparipuṇṇāyā”ti?

How then, Vāseṭṭha, do the Brahmins insult and disparage you with complete and utter disparagement, not with incomplete disparagement?

“Brāhmaṇā, bhante, evamāhaṁsu: ‘brāhmaṇova seṭṭho vaṇṇo, hīnā aññe vaṇṇā.

Venerable sir, the Brahmins say, Only a Brahmin is the best caste, other castes are inferior.

Brāhmaṇova sukko vaṇṇo, kaṇhā aññe vaṇṇā.

Only a Brahmin is the fair caste, other castes are dark.

Brāhmaṇāva sujjhanti, no abrāhmaṇā.

Only Brahmins are purified, not non-Brahmins.

Brāhmaṇāva brahmuno puttā orasā mukhato jātā brahmajā brahmanimmitā brahmadāyādā.

Only Brahmins are the true sons of Brahmā, born from his mouth, born of Brahmā, created by Brahmā, heirs of Brahmā.

Te tumhe seṭṭhaṁ vaṇṇaṁ hitvā hīnamattha vaṇṇaṁ ajjhupagatā, yadidaṁ muṇḍake samaṇake ibbhe kaṇhe bandhupādāpacce.

But you have abandoned the best caste and have gone over to the inferior caste, that is, to these shaven-headed recluses, these black disciples, these offspring of the Lords feet.

Tayidaṁ na sādhu, tayidaṁ nappatirūpaṁ, yaṁ tumhe seṭṭhaṁ vaṇṇaṁ hitvā hīnamattha vaṇṇaṁ ajjhupagatā yadidaṁ muṇḍake samaṇake ibbhe kaṇhe bandhupādāpacce’ti.

This is not good, this is not proper, that you have abandoned the best caste and have gone over to the inferior caste, that is, to these shaven-headed recluses, these black disciples, these offspring of the Lords feet.

Evaṁ kho no, bhante, brāhmaṇā akkosanti paribhāsanti attarūpāya paribhāsāya paripuṇṇāya, no aparipuṇṇāyā”ti.

Thus, venerable sir, the Brahmins insult and disparage us with complete and utter disparagement, not with incomplete disparagement.

“Taggha vo, vāseṭṭha, brāhmaṇā porāṇaṁ assarantā evamāhaṁsu: ‘brāhmaṇova seṭṭho vaṇṇo, hīnā aññe vaṇṇā; brāhmaṇova sukko vaṇṇo, kaṇhā aññe vaṇṇā; brāhmaṇāva sujjhanti, no abrāhmaṇā; brāhmaṇāva brahmuno puttā orasā mukhato jātā brahmajā brahmanimmitā brahmadāyādā’ti.

Once upon a time, Vāseṭṭha, the ancient Brahmins, recalling their tradition, said thus: The Brahmin caste is the highest, other castes are inferior; the Brahmin caste is the fairest, other castes are dark; only Brahmins are purified, not non-Brahmins; Brahmins alone are the sons of Brahmā, born from his mouth, born of Brahmā, created by Brahmā, heirs of Brahmā.

Dissanti kho pana, vāseṭṭha, brāhmaṇānaṁ brāhmaṇiyo utuniyopi gabbhiniyopi vijāyamānāpi pāyamānāpi.

However, Vāseṭṭha, Brahmin women are seen to be menstruating, pregnant, giving birth, and nursing.

Te ca brāhmaṇā yonijāva samānā evamāhaṁsu: ‘brāhmaṇova seṭṭho vaṇṇo, hīnā aññe vaṇṇā; brāhmaṇova sukko vaṇṇo, kaṇhā aññe vaṇṇā; brāhmaṇāva sujjhanti, no abrāhmaṇā; brāhmaṇāva brahmuno puttā orasā mukhato jātā brahmajā brahmanimmitā brahmadāyādā’ti.

These Brahmins, being born from the womb, still say: The Brahmin caste is the highest, other castes are inferior; the Brahmin caste is the fairest, other castes are dark; only Brahmins are purified, not non-Brahmins; Brahmins alone are the sons of Brahmā, born from his mouth, born of Brahmā, created by Brahmā, heirs of Brahmā.

Te brahmānañceva abbhācikkhanti, musā ca bhāsanti, bahuñca apuññaṁ pasavanti.

They thus slander Brahmā, speak falsely, and generate much demerit.

1. Catuvaṇṇasuddhi Cattārome, vāseṭṭha, vaṇṇā— khattiyā, brāhmaṇā, vessā, suddā.

Purity of the Four Castes There are these four castes, Vāseṭṭha: Kshatriyas, Brahmins, Vaishyas, and Shudras.

Khattiyopi kho, vāseṭṭha, idhekacco pāṇātipātī hoti adinnādāyī kāmesumicchācārī musāvādī pisuṇavāco pharusavāco samphappalāpī abhijjhālu byāpannacitto micchādiṭṭhī.

A Kshatriya, Vāseṭṭha, may be a killer, a thief, an adulterer, a liar, a slanderer, a harsh speaker, an idle chatterer, covetous, malevolent, and holding wrong views.

Iti kho, vāseṭṭha, yeme dhammā akusalā akusalasaṅkhātā sāvajjā sāvajjasaṅkhātā asevitabbā asevitabbasaṅkhātā naalamariyā naalamariyasaṅkhātā kaṇhā kaṇhavipākā viññugarahitā, khattiyepi te idhekacce sandissanti.

Thus, Vāseṭṭha, those unwholesome states, unwholesome by definition, blameworthy by definition, to be avoided by definition, not to be cultivated by definition, dark with dark results, and condemned by the wise, are found among some Kshatriyas here.

Brāhmaṇopi kho, vāseṭṭha …pe…

Similarly, Vāseṭṭha, a Brahmin...

vessopi kho, vāseṭṭha …pe…

Similarly, Vāseṭṭha, a Vaishya...

suddopi kho, vāseṭṭha, idhekacco pāṇātipātī hoti adinnādāyī kāmesumicchācārī musāvādī pisuṇavāco pharusavāco samphappalāpī abhijjhālu byāpannacitto micchādiṭṭhī.

Similarly, Vāseṭṭha, a Shudra may be a killer, a thief, an adulterer, a liar, a slanderer, a harsh speaker, an idle chatterer, covetous, malevolent, and holding wrong views.

Iti kho, vāseṭṭha, yeme dhammā akusalā akusalasaṅkhātā …pe…

Thus, Vāseṭṭha, those unwholesome states, unwholesome by definition...

kaṇhā kaṇhavipākā viññugarahitā; suddepi te idhekacce sandissanti.

dark with dark results, and condemned by the wise, are found among some Shudras here.

Khattiyopi kho, vāseṭṭha, idhekacco pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti, adinnādānā paṭivirato, kāmesumicchācārā paṭivirato, musāvādā paṭivirato, pisuṇāya vācāya paṭivirato, pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato, samphappalāpā paṭivirato, anabhijjhālu abyāpannacitto, sammādiṭṭhī.

A Kshatriya, Vāseṭṭha, may abstain from killing, abstain from stealing, abstain from sexual misconduct, abstain from lying, abstain from slander, abstain from harsh speech, abstain from idle chatter, be free from greed, free from malevolence, and hold right views.

Iti kho, vāseṭṭha, yeme dhammā kusalā kusalasaṅkhātā anavajjā anavajjasaṅkhātā sevitabbā sevitabbasaṅkhātā alamariyā alamariyasaṅkhātā sukkā sukkavipākā viññuppasatthā, khattiyepi te idhekacce sandissanti.

Thus, Vāseṭṭha, those wholesome states, wholesome by definition, blameless by definition, to be cultivated by definition, worthy of the noble ones by definition, bright with bright results, and praised by the wise, are found among some Kshatriyas here.

Brāhmaṇopi kho, vāseṭṭha …pe…

Even a Brahmin, Vāseṭṭha...

vessopi kho, vāseṭṭha …pe…

Even a Vaishya, Vāseṭṭha...

suddopi kho, vāseṭṭha, idhekacco pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti …pe…

Even a Shudra, Vāseṭṭha, here someone abstains from killing living beings...

anabhijjhālu, abyāpannacitto, sammādiṭṭhī.

Free from greed, free from ill-will, with right view.

Iti kho, vāseṭṭha, yeme dhammā kusalā kusalasaṅkhātā anavajjā anavajjasaṅkhātā sevitabbā sevitabbasaṅkhātā alamariyā alamariyasaṅkhātā sukkā sukkavipākā viññuppasatthā; suddepi te idhekacce sandissanti.

Thus, Vāseṭṭha, those qualities that are wholesome, considered wholesome, blameless, considered blameless, to be cultivated, considered to be cultivated, noble, considered noble, bright, with bright results, praised by the wise; even among the Sudras, some are seen here.

Imesu kho, vāseṭṭha, catūsu vaṇṇesu evaṁ ubhayavokiṇṇesu vattamānesu kaṇhasukkesu dhammesu viññugarahitesu ceva viññuppasatthesu ca yadettha brāhmaṇā evamāhaṁsu: ‘brāhmaṇova seṭṭho vaṇṇo, hīnā aññe vaṇṇā; brāhmaṇova sukko vaṇṇo, kaṇhā aññe vaṇṇā; brāhmaṇāva sujjhanti, no abrāhmaṇā; brāhmaṇāva brahmuno puttā orasā mukhato jātā brahmajā brahmanimmitā brahmadāyādā’ti.

Among these four castes, Vāseṭṭha, when they are mixed together, practicing both dark and bright qualities, both blamed and praised by the wise, if the Brahmins say thus: Only the Brahmin caste is the best, other castes are inferior; only the Brahmin caste is bright, other castes are dark; only the Brahmins are purified, not the non-Brahmins; only the Brahmins are the sons of Brahma, born from his mouth, born of Brahma, created by Brahma, heirs of Brahma.

Taṁ tesaṁ viññū nānujānanti.

The wise do not approve of that.

Taṁ kissa hetu?

Why is that?

Imesañhi, vāseṭṭha, catunnaṁ vaṇṇānaṁ yo hoti bhikkhu arahaṁ khīṇāsavo vusitavā katakaraṇīyo ohitabhāro anuppattasadattho parikkhīṇabhavasaṁyojano sammadaññāvimutto, so nesaṁ aggamakkhāyati dhammeneva, no adhammena.

Because, Vāseṭṭha, among these four castes, if there is a disciple who is an Arahant, with taints destroyed, who has lived the holy life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, reached the true goal, destroyed the fetters of being, and is completely liberated through final knowing, he is declared the best among them by the Dhamma, not by what is not Dhamma.

Dhammo hi, vāseṭṭha, seṭṭho janetasmiṁ, diṭṭhe ceva dhamme abhisamparāyañca.

For, Vāseṭṭha, the Dhamma is the best among people, in this life and in the next.

Tadamināpetaṁ, vāseṭṭha, pariyāyena veditabbaṁ, yathā dhammova seṭṭho janetasmiṁ, diṭṭhe ceva dhamme abhisamparāyañca.

This should be known by this method, Vāseṭṭha, that the Dhamma is the best among people, in this life and in the next.

Jānāti kho, vāseṭṭha, rājā pasenadi kosalo: ‘samaṇo gotamo anantarā sakyakulā pabbajito’ti.

King Pasenadi of Kosala knows that the ascetic Gotama has gone forth from the Sakyan clan.

Sakyā kho pana, vāseṭṭha, rañño pasenadissa kosalassa anuyuttā bhavanti.

The Sakyans, Vāseṭṭha, are devoted to King Pasenadi of Kosala.

Karonti kho, vāseṭṭha, sakyā raññe pasenadimhi kosale nipaccakāraṁ abhivādanaṁ paccuṭṭhānaṁ añjalikammaṁ sāmīcikammaṁ.

The Sakyans, Vāseṭṭha, show respect, deference, and honor to King Pasenadi of Kosala, rising up for him, saluting him, and performing proper duties.

Iti kho, vāseṭṭha, yaṁ karonti sakyā raññe pasenadimhi kosale nipaccakāraṁ abhivādanaṁ paccuṭṭhānaṁ añjalikammaṁ sāmīcikammaṁ, karoti taṁ rājā pasenadi kosalo tathāgate nipaccakāraṁ abhivādanaṁ paccuṭṭhānaṁ añjalikammaṁ sāmīcikammaṁ, na naṁ ‘sujāto samaṇo gotamo, dujjātohamasmi.

Thus, Vāseṭṭha, what the Sakyans do for King Pasenadi of Kosala, showing respect, deference, and honor, rising up for him, saluting him, and performing proper duties, King Pasenadi of Kosala does the same for the Tathāgata, showing respect, deference, and honor, rising up for him, saluting him, and performing proper duties, not thinking The ascetic Gotama is well-born, I am low-born.

Balavā samaṇo gotamo, dubbalohamasmi.

The ascetic Gotama is strong, I am weak.

Pāsādiko samaṇo gotamo, dubbaṇṇohamasmi.

The ascetic Gotama is attractive, I am unattractive.

Mahesakkho samaṇo gotamo, appesakkhohamasmī’ti.

The ascetic Gotama is influential, I am not influential.

Atha kho naṁ dhammaṁyeva sakkaronto dhammaṁ garuṁ karonto dhammaṁ mānento dhammaṁ pūjento dhammaṁ apacāyamāno evaṁ rājā pasenadi kosalo tathāgate nipaccakāraṁ karoti, abhivādanaṁ paccuṭṭhānaṁ añjalikammaṁ sāmīcikammaṁ.

But rather, honoring the Dhamma, respecting the Dhamma, esteeming the Dhamma, revering the Dhamma, King Pasenadi of Kosala shows respect, deference, and honor to the Tathāgata, rising up for him, saluting him, and performing proper duties.

Imināpi kho etaṁ, vāseṭṭha, pariyāyena veditabbaṁ, yathā dhammova seṭṭho janetasmiṁ, diṭṭhe ceva dhamme abhisamparāyañca.

Therefore, Vāseṭṭha, this should be known in this way: the Dhamma is the best among people, both in this life and in the next.

Tumhe khvattha, vāseṭṭha, nānājaccā nānānāmā nānāgottā nānākulā agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajitā.

You, Vāseṭṭha, come from different clans, different names, different families, and different lineages, having gone forth from the household life into homelessness.

‘Ke tumhe’ti—puṭṭhā samānā ‘samaṇā sakyaputtiyāmhā’ti—paṭijānātha.

When asked, Who are you? you reply, We are ascetics, followers of the Sakyan.

Yassa kho panassa, vāseṭṭha, tathāgate saddhā niviṭṭhā mūlajātā patiṭṭhitā daḷhā asaṁhāriyā samaṇena vā brāhmaṇena vā devena vā mārena vā brahmunā vā kenaci vā lokasmiṁ, tassetaṁ kallaṁ vacanāya: ‘bhagavatomhi putto oraso mukhato jāto dhammajo dhammanimmito dhammadāyādo’ti.

But, Vāseṭṭha, if someone has faith in the Tathāgata, firmly established, rooted, and unshakable by any ascetic, brahmin, deity, Māra, Brahmā, or anyone in the world, it is fitting for him to say, I am a son of the Blessed One, born from his mouth, born of the Dhamma, created by the Dhamma, an heir to the Dhamma.

Taṁ kissa hetu?

Why is that?

Tathāgatassa hetaṁ, vāseṭṭha, adhivacanaṁ ‘dhammakāyo’ itipi, ‘brahmakāyo’ itipi, ‘dhammabhūto’ itipi, ‘brahmabhūto’ itipi.

Because, Vāseṭṭha, the Tathāgata is called Dhamma-body, Brahma-body, Dhamma-become, Brahma-become.

Hoti kho so, vāseṭṭha, samayo yaṁ kadāci karahaci dīghassa addhuno accayena ayaṁ loko saṁvaṭṭati.

There comes a time, Vāseṭṭha, when, after a long period, this world contracts.

Saṁvaṭṭamāne loke yebhuyyena sattā ābhassarasaṁvattanikā honti.

When the world is contracting, most beings are born in the Ābhassara Brahmā world.

Te tattha honti manomayā pītibhakkhā sayaṁpabhā antalikkhacarā subhaṭṭhāyino ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ tiṭṭhanti.

There they are mind-made, feeding on joy, self-luminous, moving through the air, and they remain in that state for a long time.

Hoti kho so, vāseṭṭha, samayo yaṁ kadāci karahaci dīghassa addhuno accayena ayaṁ loko vivaṭṭati.

There comes a time, Vāseṭṭha, when, after a long period, this world expands.

Vivaṭṭamāne loke yebhuyyena sattā ābhassarakāyā cavitvā itthattaṁ āgacchanti.

When the world is expanding, most beings fall from the Ābhassara Brahmā world and come to this world.

Tedha honti manomayā pītibhakkhā sayaṁpabhā antalikkhacarā subhaṭṭhāyino ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ tiṭṭhanti.

Here they are mind-made, feeding on joy, self-luminous, moving through the air, and they remain in that state for a long time.

2. Rasapathavipātubhāva Ekodakībhūtaṁ kho pana, vāseṭṭha, tena samayena hoti andhakāro andhakāratimisā. Na candimasūriyā paññāyanti, na nakkhattāni tārakarūpāni paññāyanti, na rattindivā paññāyanti, na māsaḍḍhamāsā paññāyanti, na utusaṁvaccharā paññāyanti, na itthipumā paññāyanti, sattā sattātveva saṅkhyaṁ gacchanti. Atha kho tesaṁ, vāseṭṭha, sattānaṁ kadāci karahaci dīghassa addhuno accayena rasapathavī udakasmiṁ samatani; seyyathāpi nāma payaso tattassa nibbāyamānassa upari santānakaṁ hoti; evameva pāturahosi.

The Appearance of Earthly Flavors At that time, Vāseṭṭha, the world was one mass of water, enveloped in darkness, and covered with thick darkness. Neither the moon nor the sun appeared, nor did the stars and constellations appear, nor did night and day appear, nor did months and fortnights appear, nor did seasons and years appear, nor did male and female beings appear; beings were simply reckoned as beings. Then, Vāseṭṭha, after a long period, a savory earth spread itself over the waters. Just as a skin forms over hot milk as it cools, so did the savory earth appear.

Sā ahosi vaṇṇasampannā gandhasampannā rasasampannā, seyyathāpi nāma sampannaṁ vā sappi sampannaṁ vā navanītaṁ evaṁvaṇṇā ahosi.

It was endowed with color, smell, and taste, just like well-prepared ghee or butter.

Seyyathāpi nāma khuddamadhuṁ aneḷakaṁ; evamassādā ahosi.

It had the taste of fine honey, without any impurities.

Atha kho, vāseṭṭha, aññataro satto lolajātiko: ‘ambho, kimevidaṁ bhavissatī’ti rasapathaviṁ aṅguliyā sāyi.

Then, Vāseṭṭha, one being of a greedy nature said, Hey, what might this be? and touched the savory earth with his finger.

Tassa rasapathaviṁ aṅguliyā sāyato acchādesi, taṇhā cassa okkami.

As he touched the savory earth with his finger, it disappeared, and craving arose in him.

Aññepi kho, vāseṭṭha, sattā tassa sattassa diṭṭhānugatiṁ āpajjamānā rasapathaviṁ aṅguliyā sāyiṁsu.

Other beings, Vāseṭṭha, following the example of that being, touched the savory earth with their fingers.

Tesaṁ rasapathaviṁ aṅguliyā sāyataṁ acchādesi, taṇhā ca tesaṁ okkami. 3.

As they touched the savory earth with their fingers, it disappeared, and craving arose in them.

Candimasūriyādipātubhāva Atha kho te, vāseṭṭha, sattā rasapathaviṁ hatthehi āluppakārakaṁ upakkamiṁsu paribhuñjituṁ.

The Appearance of the Moon and Sun Then, Vāseṭṭha, those beings began to consume the savory earth by scooping it up with their hands.

Yato kho te, vāseṭṭha, sattā rasapathaviṁ hatthehi āluppakārakaṁ upakkamiṁsu paribhuñjituṁ.

As they began to consume the savory earth by scooping it up with their hands, their self-luminescence disappeared.

Atha tesaṁ sattānaṁ sayaṁpabhā antaradhāyi. Sayaṁpabhāya antarahitāya candimasūriyā pāturahesuṁ.

With the disappearance of their self-luminescence, the moon and sun appeared.

Candimasūriyesu pātubhūtesu nakkhattāni tārakarūpāni pāturahesuṁ.

With the appearance of the moon and sun, the stars and constellations appeared.

Nakkhattesu tārakarūpesu pātubhūtesu rattindivā paññāyiṁsu.

With the appearance of the stars and constellations, night and day became distinguishable.

Rattindivesu paññāyamānesu māsaḍḍhamāsā paññāyiṁsu.

With the distinction of night and day, months and fortnights became distinguishable.

Māsaḍḍhamāsesu paññāyamānesu utusaṁvaccharā paññāyiṁsu.

With the distinction of months and fortnights, seasons and years became distinguishable.

Ettāvatā kho, vāseṭṭha, ayaṁ loko puna vivaṭṭo hoti.

Thus far, Vāseṭṭha, this world re-evolved.

Atha kho te, vāseṭṭha, sattā rasapathaviṁ paribhuñjantā tambhakkhā tadāhārā ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu. Yathā yathā kho te, vāseṭṭha, sattā rasapathaviṁ paribhuñjantā tambhakkhā tadāhārā ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu tathā tathā tesaṁ sattānaṁ rasapathaviṁ paribhuñjantānaṁ kharattañceva kāyasmiṁ okkami, vaṇṇavevaṇṇatā ca paññāyittha.

The Appearance of the Earth Crust Then, Vāseṭṭha, those beings, consuming the savory earth, became coarse and their bodies became differentiated in appearance. As those beings, Vāseṭṭha, continued to consume the savory earth for a long time, their bodies became coarser and differences in appearance became evident.

Ekidaṁ sattā vaṇṇavanto honti, ekidaṁ sattā dubbaṇṇā.

Some beings became beautiful, while others became ugly.

Tattha ye te sattā vaṇṇavanto, te dubbaṇṇe satte atimaññanti: ‘mayametehi vaṇṇavantatarā, amhehete dubbaṇṇatarā’ti.

Those beings who were beautiful looked down upon the ugly ones, thinking, We are more beautiful than these.

Tesaṁ vaṇṇātimānapaccayā mānātimānajātikānaṁ rasapathavī antaradhāyi.

Due to their conceit and arrogance, the savory earth disappeared.

Rasāya pathaviyā antarahitāya sannipatiṁsu.

With the disappearance of the savory earth, they gathered together.

Sannipatitvā anutthuniṁsu: ‘aho rasaṁ, aho rasan’ti.

Gathering together, they lamented, Oh, the taste!

Tadetarahipi manussā kañcideva surasaṁ labhitvā evamāhaṁsu: ‘aho rasaṁ, aho rasan’ti.

Oh, the taste! Even today, when people obtain some delicious food, they say the same, Oh, the taste!

Tadeva porāṇaṁ aggaññaṁ akkharaṁ anusaranti, na tvevassa atthaṁ ājānanti. 4.

Oh, the taste! They follow the ancient saying without knowing its meaning.

Bhūmipappaṭakapātubhāva Atha kho tesaṁ, vāseṭṭha, sattānaṁ rasāya pathaviyā antarahitāya bhūmipappaṭako pāturahosi.

The Appearance of the Earth Crust Then, Vāseṭṭha, with the disappearance of the savory earth, a crust of the earth appeared.

Seyyathāpi nāma ahicchattako; evameva pāturahosi.

It appeared like a mushroom; thus it appeared.

So ahosi vaṇṇasampanno gandhasampanno rasasampanno, seyyathāpi nāma sampannaṁ vā sappi sampannaṁ vā navanītaṁ evaṁvaṇṇo ahosi.

So it was endowed with color, fragrance, and taste, just like well-prepared ghee or fresh butter, it had such a color.

Seyyathāpi nāma khuddamadhuṁ aneḷakaṁ; evamassādo ahosi.

Just like small, pure honey, it had such a taste.

Atha kho te, vāseṭṭha, sattā bhūmipappaṭakaṁ upakkamiṁsu paribhuñjituṁ.

Then, Vāseṭṭha, those beings approached the earth's crust to consume it.

Te taṁ paribhuñjantā tambhakkhā tadāhārā ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu.

Consuming it, they lived for a long time, subsisting on that food.

Yathā yathā kho te, vāseṭṭha, sattā bhūmipappaṭakaṁ paribhuñjantā tambhakkhā tadāhārā ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu tathā tathā tesaṁ sattānaṁ bhiyyoso mattāya kharattañceva kāyasmiṁ okkami, vaṇṇavevaṇṇatā ca paññāyittha.

As those beings, Vāseṭṭha, consumed the earth's crust and subsisted on that food for a long time, their bodies became coarser and differences in appearance became apparent.

Ekidaṁ sattā vaṇṇavanto honti, ekidaṁ sattā dubbaṇṇā.

Some beings became beautiful, while others became ugly.

Tattha ye te sattā vaṇṇavanto, te dubbaṇṇe satte atimaññanti: ‘mayametehi vaṇṇavantatarā, amhehete dubbaṇṇatarā’ti.

The beautiful beings despised the ugly ones, thinking, We are more beautiful than these, they are uglier than us.

Tesaṁ vaṇṇātimānapaccayā mānātimānajātikānaṁ bhūmipappaṭako antaradhāyi.

Due to their pride and arrogance, the earth's crust disappeared.

5. Padālatāpātubhāva Bhūmipappaṭake antarahite padālatā pāturahosi, seyyathāpi nāma kalambukā; evameva pāturahosi.

The Appearance of the Earth Creeper When the earth's crust disappeared, an earth creeper appeared, just like a mushroom; it appeared in the same way.

Sā ahosi vaṇṇasampannā gandhasampannā rasasampannā, seyyathāpi nāma sampannaṁ vā sappi sampannaṁ vā navanītaṁ evaṁvaṇṇā ahosi.

It was endowed with color, fragrance, and taste, just like well-prepared ghee or fresh butter, it had such a color.

Seyyathāpi nāma khuddamadhuṁ aneḷakaṁ; evamassādā ahosi.

Just like small, pure honey, it had such a taste.

Atha kho te, vāseṭṭha, sattā padālataṁ upakkamiṁsu paribhuñjituṁ.

Then, Vāseṭṭha, those beings approached the earth creeper to consume it.

Te taṁ paribhuñjantā tambhakkhā tadāhārā ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu.

Consuming it, they lived for a long time, subsisting on that food.

Yathā yathā kho te, vāseṭṭha, sattā padālataṁ paribhuñjantā tambhakkhā tadāhārā ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu tathā tathā tesaṁ sattānaṁ bhiyyoso mattāya kharattañceva kāyasmiṁ okkami, vaṇṇavevaṇṇatā ca paññāyittha.

As those beings, Vāseṭṭha, consumed the earth creeper and subsisted on that food for a long time, their bodies became coarser and differences in appearance became apparent.

Tesaṁ vaṇṇātimānapaccayā mānātimānajātikānaṁ padālatā antaradhāyi.

Due to their pride and arrogance, the earth creeper disappeared.

Padālatāya antarahitāya sannipatiṁsu.

When the earth creeper disappeared, they gathered together.

Sannipatitvā anutthuniṁsu: ‘ahu vata no, ahāyi vata no padālatā’ti.

Gathering together, they lamented, Alas, we have lost the earth creeper.

Tadetarahipi manussā kenaci dukkhadhammena phuṭṭhā evamāhaṁsu: ‘ahu vata no, ahāyi vata no’ti.

Even now, when people are afflicted by some misfortune, they say, Alas, we have lost it.

Tadeva porāṇaṁ aggaññaṁ akkharaṁ anusaranti, na tvevassa atthaṁ ājānanti.

They follow the ancient saying, but do not know its meaning.

6. Akaṭṭhapākasālipātubhāva Atha kho tesaṁ, vāseṭṭha, sattānaṁ padālatāya antarahitāya akaṭṭhapāko sāli pāturahosi akaṇo athuso suddho sugandho taṇḍulapphalo. Yaṁ taṁ sāyaṁ sāyamāsāya āharanti, pāto taṁ hoti pakkaṁ paṭivirūḷhaṁ.

The Appearance of Unhusked Rice Then, Vasettha, when those beings had disappeared, unhusked rice appeared, clean, fragrant, and with fine grains. Whatever they brought in the evening for their evening meal, by morning it was ripe and had sprouted again.

Yaṁ taṁ pāto pātarāsāya āharanti, sāyaṁ taṁ hoti pakkaṁ paṭivirūḷhaṁ; nāpadānaṁ paññāyati.

Whatever they brought in the morning for their morning meal, by evening it was ripe and had sprouted again; no stubble was seen.

Atha kho te, vāseṭṭha, sattā akaṭṭhapākaṁ sāliṁ paribhuñjantā tambhakkhā tadāhārā ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu.

Then, Vasettha, those beings, consuming the unhusked rice, feeding on it, lived for a long time, for a long period.

7. Itthipurisaliṅgapātubhāva Yathā yathā kho te, vāseṭṭha, sattā akaṭṭhapākaṁ sāliṁ paribhuñjantā tambhakkhā tadāhārā ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu tathā tathā tesaṁ sattānaṁ bhiyyoso mattāya kharattañceva kāyasmiṁ okkami, vaṇṇavevaṇṇatā ca paññāyittha, itthiyā ca itthiliṅgaṁ pāturahosi purisassa ca purisaliṅgaṁ. Itthī ca purisaṁ ativelaṁ upanijjhāyati puriso ca itthiṁ.

The Appearance of Gender As those beings, Vasettha, consuming the unhusked rice, feeding on it, lived for a long time, for a long period, their bodies became coarser, and differences in appearance became apparent, and the female sex appeared in women and the male sex in men. Women began to excessively contemplate men, and men began to excessively contemplate women.

Tesaṁ ativelaṁ aññamaññaṁ upanijjhāyataṁ sārāgo udapādi, pariḷāho kāyasmiṁ okkami.

As they excessively contemplated each other, passion arose in them, and burning entered their bodies.

Te pariḷāhapaccayā methunaṁ dhammaṁ paṭiseviṁsu.

Because of that burning, they engaged in sexual intercourse.

Ye kho pana te, vāseṭṭha, tena samayena sattā passanti methunaṁ dhammaṁ paṭisevante, aññe paṁsuṁ khipanti, aññe seṭṭhiṁ khipanti, aññe gomayaṁ khipanti: ‘nassa asuci, nassa asucī’ti.

Those beings who saw them engaging in sexual intercourse threw dust at them, others threw ashes, and others threw cow dung, saying, Perish, you filthy one, perish, you filthy one.

‘Kathañhi nāma satto sattassa evarūpaṁ karissatī’ti.

How can a being do such a thing to another being?

Tadetarahipi manussā ekaccesu janapadesu vadhuyā nibbuyhamānāya aññe paṁsuṁ khipanti, aññe seṭṭhiṁ khipanti, aññe gomayaṁ khipanti.

Even now, in some regions, when a bride is being led away, others throw dust, others throw ashes, and others throw cow dung.

Tadeva porāṇaṁ aggaññaṁ akkharaṁ anusaranti, na tvevassa atthaṁ ājānanti.

They follow the ancient custom, but they do not know its meaning.

8. Methunadhammasamācāra Adhammasammataṁ kho pana, vāseṭṭha, tena samayena hoti, tadetarahi dhammasammataṁ.

The Practice of Sexual Intercourse At that time, Vasettha, it was considered wrong, but now it is considered right.

Ye kho pana, vāseṭṭha, tena samayena sattā methunaṁ dhammaṁ paṭisevanti, te māsampi dvemāsampi na labhanti gāmaṁ vā nigamaṁ vā pavisituṁ.

Those beings, Vasettha, who engaged in sexual intercourse at that time, were not allowed to enter a village or town for a month or two.

Yato kho te, vāseṭṭha, sattā tasmiṁ asaddhamme ativelaṁ pātabyataṁ āpajjiṁsu. Atha agārāni upakkamiṁsu kātuṁ tasseva asaddhammassa paṭicchādanatthaṁ.

When those beings, Vasettha, excessively indulged in that wrong practice, they began to build houses to conceal that wrong practice.

Atha kho, vāseṭṭha, aññatarassa sattassa alasajātikassa etadahosi: ‘ambho, kimevāhaṁ vihaññāmi sāliṁ āharanto sāyaṁ sāyamāsāya pāto pātarāsāya.

Then, Vasettha, one lazy being thought, Why should I tire myself bringing rice in the evening for the evening meal and in the morning for the morning meal?

Yannūnāhaṁ sāliṁ āhareyyaṁ sakideva sāyapātarāsāyā’ti.

What if I were to bring rice just once for both the evening and morning meals?

Atha kho so, vāseṭṭha, satto sāliṁ āhāsi sakideva sāyapātarāsāya.

Then, Vāseṭṭha, that being ate rice only once for both evening and morning meals.

Atha kho, vāseṭṭha, aññataro satto yena so satto tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā taṁ sattaṁ etadavoca: ‘ehi, bho satta, sālāhāraṁ gamissāmā’ti.

Then, Vāseṭṭha, another being approached that being; having approached, he said to that being, Come, friend, let us go for rice.

‘Alaṁ, bho satta, āhato me sāli sakideva sāyapātarāsāyā’ti.

Enough, friend, I have eaten rice only once for both evening and morning meals.

Atha kho so, vāseṭṭha, satto tassa sattassa diṭṭhānugatiṁ āpajjamāno sāliṁ āhāsi sakideva dvīhāya.

Then, Vāseṭṭha, that being, following the example of the other being, ate rice only once every two days.

‘Evampi kira, bho, sādhū’ti.

This too, friend, is good.

‘Alaṁ, bho satta, āhato me sāli sakideva dvīhāyā’ti.

Enough, friend, I have eaten rice only once every two days.

Atha kho so, vāseṭṭha, satto tassa sattassa diṭṭhānugatiṁ āpajjamāno sāliṁ āhāsi sakideva catūhāya, ‘evampi kira, bho, sādhū’ti.

Then, Vāseṭṭha, that being, following the example of the other being, ate rice only once every four days. This too, friend, is good.

‘Alaṁ, bho satta, āhato me sāli sakideva catūhāyā’ti.

Enough, friend, I have eaten rice only once every four days.

Atha kho so, vāseṭṭha, satto tassa sattassa diṭṭhānugatiṁ āpajjamāno sāliṁ āhāsi sakideva aṭṭhāhāya, ‘evampi kira, bho, sādhū’ti.

Then, Vāseṭṭha, that being, following the example of the other being, ate rice only once every eight days.

Yato kho te, vāseṭṭha, sattā sannidhikārakaṁ sāliṁ upakkamiṁsu paribhuñjituṁ. Atha kaṇopi taṇḍulaṁ pariyonandhi, thusopi taṇḍulaṁ pariyonandhi; lūnampi nappaṭivirūḷhaṁ, apadānaṁ paññāyittha, saṇḍasaṇḍā sālayo aṭṭhaṁsu. 9.

This too, friend, is good. When those beings, Vāseṭṭha, began to consume stored rice, then even the husk enclosed the grain, and the chaff enclosed the grain; even when cut, it did not regrow, and the stubble was visible, and the rice plants stood in clumps.

Sālivibhāga Atha kho te, vāseṭṭha, sattā sannipatiṁsu, sannipatitvā anutthuniṁsu: ‘pāpakā vata, bho, dhammā sattesu pātubhūtā.

Division of Rice Then, Vāseṭṭha, those beings gathered together, and having gathered, they lamented, Corrupt things, friends, have appeared among beings.

Mayañhi pubbe manomayā ahumhā pītibhakkhā sayaṁpabhā antalikkhacarā subhaṭṭhāyino, ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ aṭṭhamhā.

For we were formerly mind-made, feeding on joy, self-luminous, moving through the air, glorious, and we remained so for a long time.

Tesaṁ no amhākaṁ kadāci karahaci dīghassa addhuno accayena rasapathavī udakasmiṁ samatani.

For us, after a long time, the savory earth spread over the water.

Sā ahosi vaṇṇasampannā gandhasampannā rasasampannā.

It was beautiful in color, fragrant, and tasty.

Te mayaṁ rasapathaviṁ hatthehi āluppakārakaṁ upakkamimha paribhuñjituṁ, tesaṁ no rasapathaviṁ hatthehi āluppakārakaṁ upakkamataṁ paribhuñjituṁ sayaṁpabhā antaradhāyi.

We began to consume the savory earth by breaking it off with our hands, and as we consumed it by breaking it off with our hands, our self-luminosity disappeared.

Sayaṁpabhāya antarahitāya candimasūriyā pāturahesuṁ, candimasūriyesu pātubhūtesu nakkhattāni tārakarūpāni pāturahesuṁ, nakkhattesu tārakarūpesu pātubhūtesu rattindivā paññāyiṁsu, rattindivesu paññāyamānesu māsaḍḍhamāsā paññāyiṁsu.

With the disappearance of our self-luminosity, the moon and sun appeared, and with the appearance of the moon and sun, the stars and constellations appeared, and with the appearance of the stars and constellations, night and day became discernible, and with the discernment of night and day, months and fortnights became discernible.

Māsaḍḍhamāsesu paññāyamānesu utusaṁvaccharā paññāyiṁsu.

As the months and half-months passed, the seasons and years became apparent.

Te mayaṁ rasapathaviṁ paribhuñjantā tambhakkhā tadāhārā ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ aṭṭhamhā.

We, consuming the essence of the earth, were nourished by it and lived for a long time.

Tesaṁ no pāpakānaṁyeva akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pātubhāvā rasapathavī antaradhāyi.

Due to the emergence of our corrupt and unwholesome actions, the essence of the earth disappeared.

Rasapathaviyā antarahitāya bhūmipappaṭako pāturahosi.

With the disappearance of the essence of the earth, a crust of the earth appeared.

So ahosi vaṇṇasampanno gandhasampanno rasasampanno.

It was endowed with color, fragrance, and taste.

Te mayaṁ bhūmipappaṭakaṁ upakkamimha paribhuñjituṁ.

We approached the earth crust to consume it.

Te mayaṁ taṁ paribhuñjantā tambhakkhā tadāhārā ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ aṭṭhamhā.

We, consuming it, were nourished by it and lived for a long time.

Tesaṁ no pāpakānaṁyeva akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pātubhāvā bhūmipappaṭako antaradhāyi.

Due to the emergence of our corrupt and unwholesome actions, the earth crust disappeared.

Bhūmipappaṭake antarahite padālatā pāturahosi.

With the disappearance of the earth crust, a creeper appeared.

Sā ahosi vaṇṇasampannā gandhasampannā rasasampannā.

It was endowed with color, fragrance, and taste.

Te mayaṁ padālataṁ upakkamimha paribhuñjituṁ.

We approached the creeper to consume it.

Te mayaṁ taṁ paribhuñjantā tambhakkhā tadāhārā ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ aṭṭhamhā.

We, consuming it, were nourished by it and lived for a long time.

Tesaṁ no pāpakānaṁyeva akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pātubhāvā padālatā antaradhāyi.

Due to the emergence of our corrupt and unwholesome actions, the creeper disappeared.

Padālatāya antarahitāya akaṭṭhapāko sāli pāturahosi akaṇo athuso suddho sugandho taṇḍulapphalo.

With the disappearance of the creeper, uncooked rice appeared, without husk, clean, fragrant, and with a grain.

Yaṁ taṁ sāyaṁ sāyamāsāya āharāma, pāto taṁ hoti pakkaṁ paṭivirūḷhaṁ.

What we brought in the evening for the evening meal, by morning it was ripe and sprouted.

Yaṁ taṁ pāto pātarāsāya āharāma, sāyaṁ taṁ hoti pakkaṁ paṭivirūḷhaṁ.

What we brought in the morning for the morning meal, by evening it was ripe and sprouted.

Nāpadānaṁ paññāyittha.

There were no visible stalks.

Te mayaṁ akaṭṭhapākaṁ sāliṁ paribhuñjantā tambhakkhā tadāhārā ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ aṭṭhamhā.

We, consuming the uncooked rice, were nourished by it and lived for a long time.

Tesaṁ no pāpakānaṁyeva akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pātubhāvā kaṇopi taṇḍulaṁ pariyonandhi, thusopi taṇḍulaṁ pariyonandhi, lūnampi nappaṭivirūḷhaṁ, apadānaṁ paññāyittha, saṇḍasaṇḍā sālayo ṭhitā.

Due to the emergence of our corrupt and unwholesome actions, husk enveloped the grain, chaff enveloped the grain, what was cut did not sprout again, stalks became visible, and the rice plants stood in clusters.

Yannūna mayaṁ sāliṁ vibhajeyyāma, mariyādaṁ ṭhapeyyāmā’ti.

We thought, Let us divide the rice and set boundaries.

Atha kho te, vāseṭṭha, sattā sāliṁ vibhajiṁsu, mariyādaṁ ṭhapesuṁ.

Then, those beings divided the rice and set boundaries.

Atha kho, vāseṭṭha, aññataro satto lolajātiko sakaṁ bhāgaṁ parirakkhanto aññataraṁ bhāgaṁ adinnaṁ ādiyitvā paribhuñji.

Then, one being, greedy by nature, while protecting his own share, took and consumed another's share without permission.

Tamenaṁ aggahesuṁ, gahetvā etadavocuṁ: ‘pāpakaṁ vata, bho satta, karosi, yatra hi nāma sakaṁ bhāgaṁ parirakkhanto aññataraṁ bhāgaṁ adinnaṁ ādiyitvā paribhuñjasi.

They caught him and said to him, You are doing an corrupt thing, friend, by protecting your own share and taking another's share without permission.

Māssu, bho satta, punapi evarūpamakāsī’ti.

Do not do such a thing again, friend.

‘Evaṁ, bho’ti kho, vāseṭṭha, so satto tesaṁ sattānaṁ paccassosi.

Yes, friend, that being replied to them.

Dutiyampi kho, vāseṭṭha, so satto …pe…

For the second time, that being...

tatiyampi kho, vāseṭṭha, so satto sakaṁ bhāgaṁ parirakkhanto aññataraṁ bhāgaṁ adinnaṁ ādiyitvā paribhuñji.

For the third time, Vāseṭṭha, that being, while protecting his own portion, took and consumed another portion that was not given to him.

Tamenaṁ aggahesuṁ, gahetvā etadavocuṁ: ‘pāpakaṁ vata, bho satta, karosi, yatra hi nāma sakaṁ bhāgaṁ parirakkhanto aññataraṁ bhāgaṁ adinnaṁ ādiyitvā paribhuñjasi.

They seized him, and having taken hold of him, said: Indeed, you are doing something wrong, friend, by protecting your own portion and taking and consuming another portion that was not given to you.

Māssu, bho satta, punapi evarūpamakāsī’ti.

Do not, friend, do such a thing again.

Aññe pāṇinā pahariṁsu, aññe leḍḍunā pahariṁsu, aññe daṇḍena pahariṁsu.

Some struck him with their hands, some struck him with clods, and some struck him with sticks.

Tadagge kho, vāseṭṭha, adinnādānaṁ paññāyati, garahā paññāyati, musāvādo paññāyati, daṇḍādānaṁ paññāyati.

At that time, Vāseṭṭha, the taking of what is not given became apparent, blame became apparent, false speech became apparent, and punishment became apparent.

10. Mahāsammatarājā Atha kho te, vāseṭṭha, sattā sannipatiṁsu, sannipatitvā anutthuniṁsu: ‘pāpakā vata bho dhammā sattesu pātubhūtā, yatra hi nāma adinnādānaṁ paññāyissati, garahā paññāyissati, musāvādo paññāyissati, daṇḍādānaṁ paññāyissati.

The Great Elect King

Then, Vāseṭṭha, those beings gathered together, and having gathered, lamented:

Indeed, bad things have appeared among beings, where the taking of what is not given will become apparent, blame will become apparent, false speech will become apparent, and punishment will become apparent.

Yannūna mayaṁ ekaṁ sattaṁ sammanneyyāma, yo no sammā khīyitabbaṁ khīyeyya, sammā garahitabbaṁ garaheyya, sammā pabbājetabbaṁ pabbājeyya.

What if we were to appoint one being who would properly censure those who should be censured, properly blame those who should be blamed, and properly banish those who should be banished?

Mayaṁ panassa sālīnaṁ bhāgaṁ anuppadassāmā’ti.

We will give him a portion of rice.

Atha kho te, vāseṭṭha, sattā yo nesaṁ satto abhirūpataro ca dassanīyataro ca pāsādikataro ca mahesakkhataro ca taṁ sattaṁ upasaṅkamitvā etadavocuṁ: ‘ehi, bho satta, sammā khīyitabbaṁ khīya, sammā garahitabbaṁ garaha, sammā pabbājetabbaṁ pabbājehi.

Then, Vāseṭṭha, those beings approached the most handsome, most pleasing, most respectable, and most powerful among them and said:

Come, friend, properly censure those who should be censured, properly blame those who should be blamed, and properly banish those who should be banished.

Mayaṁ pana te sālīnaṁ bhāgaṁ anuppadassāmā’ti.

We will give you a portion of rice.

‘Evaṁ, bho’ti kho, vāseṭṭha, so satto tesaṁ sattānaṁ paṭissuṇitvā sammā khīyitabbaṁ khīyi, sammā garahitabbaṁ garahi, sammā pabbājetabbaṁ pabbājesi.

Very well, friend, said that being, Vāseṭṭha, having listened to them, he properly censured those who should be censured, properly blamed those who should be blamed, and properly banished those who should be banished.

Te panassa sālīnaṁ bhāgaṁ anuppadaṁsu.

They gave him a portion of rice.

Mahājanasammatoti kho, vāseṭṭha, ‘mahāsammato, mahāsammato’ tveva paṭhamaṁ akkharaṁ upanibbattaṁ.

Thus, Vāseṭṭha, the first term Mahāsammata (Great Elect) arose.

Khettānaṁ adhipatīti kho, vāseṭṭha, ‘khattiyo, khattiyo’ tveva dutiyaṁ akkharaṁ upanibbattaṁ.

As the lord of the fields, the second term Khattiya (Noble) arose.

Dhammena pare rañjetīti kho, vāseṭṭha, ‘rājā, rājā’ tveva tatiyaṁ akkharaṁ upanibbattaṁ.

As one who delights others with righteousness, the third term Rājā (King) arose.

Iti kho, vāseṭṭha, evametassa khattiyamaṇḍalassa porāṇena aggaññena akkharena abhinibbatti ahosi tesaṁyeva sattānaṁ, anaññesaṁ.

Thus, Vāseṭṭha, the origin of the noble class with its ancient terms arose among those beings, not among others.

Sadisānaṁyeva, no asadisānaṁ.

Among those similar, not among those dissimilar.

Dhammeneva, no adhammena.

With righteousness, not with unrighteousness.

Dhammo hi, vāseṭṭha, seṭṭho janetasmiṁ diṭṭhe ceva dhamme abhisamparāyañca.

For, Vāseṭṭha, righteousness is indeed the best in this world and in the next.

11. Brāhmaṇamaṇḍala Atha kho tesaṁ, vāseṭṭha, sattānaṁyeva ekaccānaṁ etadahosi: ‘pāpakā vata, bho, dhammā sattesu pātubhūtā, yatra hi nāma adinnādānaṁ paññāyissati, garahā paññāyissati, musāvādo paññāyissati, daṇḍādānaṁ paññāyissati, pabbājanaṁ paññāyissati.

The Brahmin Class

Then, Vāseṭṭha, some of those beings thought, Alas, corrupt things have appeared among beings, such as theft, reproach, falsehood, punishment, and banishment. What if we were to carry out these unskillful, unwholesome things? They carried out these unskillful, unwholesome things.

Yannūna mayaṁ pāpake akusale dhamme vāheyyāmā’ti. Te pāpake akusale dhamme vāhesuṁ.

Because they carried out these unskillful, unwholesome things, Vāseṭṭha, the term brāhmaṇas, brāhmaṇas was first coined.

Pāpake akusale dhamme vāhentīti kho, vāseṭṭha, ‘brāhmaṇā, brāhmaṇā’ tveva paṭhamaṁ akkharaṁ upanibbattaṁ.

They built leaf huts in the forest and practiced in those leaf huts, free from ashes and smoke, with their leaf pestles.

Te araññāyatane paṇṇakuṭiyo karitvā paṇṇakuṭīsu jhāyanti vītaṅgārā vītadhūmā pannamusalā sāyaṁ sāyamāsāya pāto pātarāsāya gāmanigamarājadhāniyo osaranti ghāsamesamānā.

In the evening, for their evening meal, and in the morning, for their morning meal, they went to the villages, towns, and royal cities seeking alms.

Te ghāsaṁ paṭilabhitvā punadeva araññāyatane paṇṇakuṭīsu jhāyanti.

Having obtained alms, they returned to the forest and practiced in their leaf huts.

Tamenaṁ manussā disvā evamāhaṁsu: ‘ime kho, bho, sattā araññāyatane paṇṇakuṭiyo karitvā paṇṇakuṭīsu jhāyanti, vītaṅgārā vītadhūmā pannamusalā sāyaṁ sāyamāsāya pāto pātarāsāya gāmanigamarājadhāniyo osaranti ghāsamesamānā.

Seeing this, people said, These beings build leaf huts in the forest and practice in those leaf huts, free from ashes and smoke, with their leaf pestles. In the evening, for their evening meal, and in the morning, for their morning meal, they go to the villages, towns, and royal cities seeking alms.

Te ghāsaṁ paṭilabhitvā punadeva araññāyatane paṇṇakuṭīsu jhāyantī’ti, jhāyantīti kho, vāseṭṭha, ‘jhāyakā, jhāyakā’ tveva dutiyaṁ akkharaṁ upanibbattaṁ.

Having obtained alms, they return to the forest and practice in their leaf huts.

Because they practiced, Vāseṭṭha, the term jhāyakas, jhāyakas was coined as the second term.

Tesaṁyeva kho, vāseṭṭha, sattānaṁ ekacce sattā araññāyatane paṇṇakuṭīsu taṁ jhānaṁ anabhisambhuṇamānā gāmasāmantaṁ nigamasāmantaṁ osaritvā ganthe karontā acchanti.

However, some of those beings, unable to attain that development in the forest leaf huts, went to the vicinity of villages and towns and lived there making a living.

Tamenaṁ manussā disvā evamāhaṁsu: ‘ime kho, bho, sattā araññāyatane paṇṇakuṭīsu taṁ jhānaṁ anabhisambhuṇamānā gāmasāmantaṁ nigamasāmantaṁ osaritvā ganthe karontā acchanti, na dānime jhāyantī’ti.

Seeing this, people said, These beings, unable to attain that development in the forest leaf huts, have come to the vicinity of villages and towns and live there making a living. They no longer practiced.

Na dānime jhāyantīti kho, vāseṭṭha, ‘ajjhāyakā, ajjhāyakā’ tveva tatiyaṁ akkharaṁ upanibbattaṁ.

Because they no longer practiced, Vāseṭṭha, the term ajjhāyakas, ajjhāyakas was coined as the third term.

Hīnasammataṁ kho pana, vāseṭṭha, tena samayena hoti, tadetarahi seṭṭhasammataṁ.

At that time, it was considered lowly, but now it is considered the highest.

Iti kho, vāseṭṭha, evametassa brāhmaṇamaṇḍalassa porāṇena aggaññena akkharena abhinibbatti ahosi tesaṁyeva sattānaṁ, anaññesaṁ sadisānaṁyeva no asadisānaṁ dhammeneva, no adhammena.

Thus, Vāseṭṭha, the ancient term for the brāhmaṇa class originated among those beings themselves, not among others, and it was in accordance with the Dhamma, not against the Dhamma.

Dhammo hi, vāseṭṭha, seṭṭho janetasmiṁ diṭṭhe ceva dhamme abhisamparāyañca.

For, Vāseṭṭha, the Dhamma is the best in this world and in the next.

12. Vessamaṇḍala Tesaṁyeva kho, vāseṭṭha, sattānaṁ ekacce sattā methunaṁ dhammaṁ samādāya visukammante payojesuṁ.

The Merchant Class Some of those beings, Vāseṭṭha, took up the practice of sexual intercourse and engaged in various trades.

Methunaṁ dhammaṁ samādāya visukammante payojentīti kho, vāseṭṭha, ‘vessā, vessā’ tveva akkharaṁ upanibbattaṁ.

Because they took up the practice of sexual intercourse and engaged in various trades, Vāseṭṭha, the term vessas, vessas was coined.

Iti kho, vāseṭṭha, evametassa vessamaṇḍalassa porāṇena aggaññena akkharena abhinibbatti ahosi tesaññeva sattānaṁ anaññesaṁ sadisānaṁyeva, no asadisānaṁ, dhammeneva no adhammena.

Thus, Vāseṭṭha, this was the origin of the Vessa class with the ancient primeval syllable, arising from those beings themselves, not from others, similar to them, not dissimilar, through righteousness, not unrighteousness.

Dhammo hi, vāseṭṭha, seṭṭho janetasmiṁ diṭṭhe ceva dhamme abhisamparāyañca.

For indeed, Vāseṭṭha, righteousness is supreme in this world and in the next.

13. Suddamaṇḍala Tesaññeva kho, vāseṭṭha, sattānaṁ ye te sattā avasesā te luddācārā khuddācārā ahesuṁ.

The Pure Class Among those beings, Vāseṭṭha, those who were left became of harsh conduct and low conduct.

Luddācārā khuddācārāti kho, vāseṭṭha, ‘suddā, suddā’ tveva akkharaṁ upanibbattaṁ.

It is from this harsh and low conduct, Vāseṭṭha, that the term suddā, suddā (pure, pure) arose.

Iti kho, vāseṭṭha, evametassa suddamaṇḍalassa porāṇena aggaññena akkharena abhinibbatti ahosi tesaṁyeva sattānaṁ anaññesaṁ, sadisānaṁyeva no asadisānaṁ, dhammeneva, no adhammena.

Thus, Vāseṭṭha, this was the origin of the Pure class with the ancient primeval syllable, arising from those beings themselves, not from others, similar to them, not dissimilar, through righteousness, not unrighteousness.

Dhammo hi, vāseṭṭha, seṭṭho janetasmiṁ diṭṭhe ceva dhamme abhisamparāyañca.

For indeed, Vāseṭṭha, righteousness is supreme in this world and in the next.

Ahu kho so, vāseṭṭha, samayo, yaṁ khattiyopi sakaṁ dhammaṁ garahamāno agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajati: ‘samaṇo bhavissāmī’ti.

There was a time, Vāseṭṭha, when a Khattiya, disapproving of his own conduct, would leave the household life and go forth into homelessness, thinking, I will become a recluse.

Brāhmaṇopi kho, vāseṭṭha …pe…

A Suddha too, Vāseṭṭha, disapproving of his own conduct, would leave the household life and go forth into homelessness, thinking, I will become a recluse.

Imehi kho, vāseṭṭha, catūhi maṇḍalehi samaṇamaṇḍalassa abhinibbatti ahosi, tesaṁyeva sattānaṁ anaññesaṁ, sadisānaṁyeva no asadisānaṁ, dhammeneva no adhammena.

Thus, Vāseṭṭha, the origin of the recluse class arose from these four classes, from those beings themselves, not from others, similar to them, not dissimilar, through righteousness, not unrighteousness.

Dhammo hi, vāseṭṭha, seṭṭho janetasmiṁ diṭṭhe ceva dhamme abhisamparāyañca.

For indeed, Vāseṭṭha, righteousness is supreme in this world and in the next.

On Misconduct and Its Consequences A Khattiya, Vāseṭṭha, who engages in bodily misconduct, verbal misconduct, and mental misconduct, who holds wrong views, and undertakes actions based on wrong views, due to such actions, upon the dissolution of the body after death, is reborn in a state of woe, an unhappy destination, a state of downfall, in hell.

Development of the Factors of Enlightenment Even a Khattiya, Vāseṭṭha, who is restrained in body, speech, and mind, who develops the seven factors of enlightenment, attains final Nibbāna in this very life.

For among these four castes, Vāseṭṭha, whoever is a disciple who is an Arahant, one with taints destroyed, who has lived the holy life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, reached the true goal, destroyed the fetters of being, and is completely liberated through final knowing, he is declared the foremost among them by Dhamma, not by non-Dhamma.

Dhammo hi, vāseṭṭha, seṭṭho janetasmiṁ diṭṭhe ceva dhamme abhisamparāyañca.

For Dhamma, Vāseṭṭha, is the best in this world and in the next.

Brahmunā pesā, vāseṭṭha, sanaṅkumārena gāthā bhāsitā: ‘Khattiyo seṭṭho janetasmiṁ, ye gottapaṭisārino; Vijjācaraṇasampanno, so seṭṭho devamānuse’ti.

This verse was spoken by Brahmā Sanaṅkumāra: The Khattiya is the best among those who rely on lineage; One accomplished in knowing and conduct is the best among gods and humans.

Sā kho panesā, vāseṭṭha, brahmunā sanaṅkumārena gāthā sugītā, no duggītā.

This verse, Vāseṭṭha, was well spoken by Brahmā Sanaṅkumāra, not poorly spoken.

Subhāsitā, no dubbhāsitā.

It was well said, not poorly said.

Atthasaṁhitā, no anatthasaṁhitā.

It is beneficial, not unbeneficial.

Anumatā mayā.

It is approved by me.

Ahampi, vāseṭṭha, evaṁ vadāmi— Khattiyo seṭṭho janetasmiṁ, ye gottapaṭisārino; Vijjācaraṇasampanno, so seṭṭho devamānuse”ti.

I too, Vāseṭṭha, say this:

The Khattiya is the best among those who rely on lineage;

One accomplished in knowing and conduct is the best among gods and humans.

Idamavoca bhagavā.

The Blessed One said this.

Attamanā vāseṭṭhabhāradvājā bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandunti.

Vāseṭṭha and Bhāradvāja were delighted with the Blessed One's words.

Aggaññasuttaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ catutthaṁ.

The Aggañña Sutta is finished.
