Khuddakanikāya Dhammapada Pāpavagga Cūḷekasāṭakabrāhmaṇavatthu Abhittharetha kalyāṇe, pāpā cittaṁ nivāraye; Dandhañhi karoto puññaṁ, pāpasmiṁ ramatī mano.

The Chapter on Corrupt

Hasten to do good; restrain the mind from corrupt. For the mind delights in corrupt when one is slow in doing good.

Seyyasakattheravatthu Pāpañce puriso kayirā, Na naṁ kayirā punappunaṁ; Na tamhi chandaṁ kayirātha, Dukkho pāpassa uccayo.

If a person commits corrupt, let them not do it repeatedly. Let them not find pleasure in it, for the accumulation of corrupt brings suffering.

Lājadevadhītāvatthu Puññañce puriso kayirā, kayirā naṁ punappunaṁ; Tamhi chandaṁ kayirātha, sukho puññassa uccayo.

If a person does good, let them do it repeatedly. Let them find joy in it, for the accumulation of good brings happiness.

Anāthapiṇḍikaseṭṭhivatthu Pāpopi passati bhadraṁ, Yāva pāpaṁ na paccati; Yadā ca paccati pāpaṁ, Atha pāpo pāpāni passati.

Even the wicked see good as long as their corrupt does not ripen. But when their corrupt ripens, then the wicked see corrupt.

Bhadropi passati pāpaṁ, Yāva bhadraṁ na paccati; Yadā ca paccati bhadraṁ, Atha bhadro bhadrāni passati.

Even the good see corrupt as long as their good does not ripen. But when their good ripens, then the good see good.

Asaññataparikkhāravatthu Māvamaññetha pāpassa, na mantaṁ āgamissati; Udabindunipātena, udakumbhopi pūrati; Bālo pūrati pāpassa, thokaṁ thokampi ācinaṁ.

Do not underestimate corrupt, thinking it will not come to you. With the falling of water drops, even a water jar is filled. The fool fills with corrupt, gathering it little by little.

Biḷālapādakaseṭṭhivatthu Māvamaññetha puññassa, na mandaṁ āgamissati; Udabindunipātena, udakumbhopi pūrati; Dhīro pūrati puññassa, thokaṁ thokampi ācinaṁ.

Do not underestimate good, thinking it will not come to you. With the falling of water drops, even a water jar is filled. The wise fill with good, gathering it little by little.

Mahādhanavāṇijavatthu Vāṇijova bhayaṁ maggaṁ, appasattho mahaddhano; Visaṁ jīvitukāmova, pāpāni parivajjaye.

Just as a merchant with few companions avoids a dangerous road, and just as one desiring to live avoids poison, so should one avoid corrupt deeds.

Kukkuṭamittanesādavatthu Pāṇimhi ce vaṇo nāssa, hareyya pāṇinā visaṁ; Nābbaṇaṁ visamanveti, natthi pāpaṁ akubbato. Kokasunakhaluddakavatthu Yo appaduṭṭhassa narassa dussati, Suddhassa posassa anaṅgaṇassa; Tameva bālaṁ pacceti pāpaṁ, Sukhumo rajo paṭivātaṁva khitto.

If there is no wound on one's hand, one may carry poison in it. Poison does not enter one who has no wound; there is no corrupt for one who does not commit it.

Whoever harms an innocent, pure, and unblemished person, the corrupt returns to that fool, like fine dust thrown against the wind.

Maṇikārakulūpakatissattheravatthu Gabbhameke uppajjanti, nirayaṁ pāpakammino; Saggaṁ sugatino yanti, parinibbanti anāsavā.

Some are born in the womb, corrupt-doers go to hell, the virtuous go to heaven, and those without defilements attain Nibbāna.

Tayojanavatthu Na antalikkhe na samuddamajjhe, Na pabbatānaṁ vivaraṁ pavissa; Na vijjatī so jagatippadeso, Yatthaṭṭhito mucceyya pāpakammā.

Not in the sky, nor in the middle of the sea, nor in a mountain cave, is there a place in the world where one can escape the consequences of corrupt deeds.

Suppabuddhasakyavatthu Na antalikkhe na samuddamajjhe, Na pabbatānaṁ vivaraṁ pavissa; Na vijjatī so jagatippadeso, Yatthaṭṭhitaṁ nappasaheyya maccu. Pāpavaggo navamo.

Not in the sky, nor in the middle of the sea, nor in a mountain cave, is there a place in the world where one can escape death.
