Khuddakanikāya Dhammapada Buddhavagga Māradhītaravatthu Yassa jitaṁ nāvajīyati, Jitaṁ yassa noyāti koci loke; Taṁ buddhamanantagocaraṁ, Apadaṁ kena padena nessatha.

The Chapter on the Tathagata

The one who is conquered is not overcome, the one who is conquered does not go anywhere in the world; How will you lead the Tathāgata, with infinite range, the pathless, by a path?

Yassa jālinī visattikā, Taṇhā natthi kuhiñci netave; Taṁ buddhamanantagocaraṁ, Apadaṁ kena padena nessatha.

For whom there is no craving, the entangling snare, to lead anywhere; How will you lead the Tathāgata, with infinite range, the pathless, by a path?

Devorohaṇavatthu Ye jhānapasutā dhīrā, nekkhammūpasame ratā; Devāpi tesaṁ pihayanti, sambuddhānaṁ satīmataṁ.

Those wise ones who are devoted to development, delighting in renunciation and calm; Even the gods envy them, the mindful, fully awakened ones.

Erakapattanāgarājavatthu Kiccho manussapaṭilābho, kicchaṁ maccāna jīvitaṁ; Kicchaṁ saddhammassavanaṁ, kiccho buddhānamuppādo.

Difficult is the attainment of human birth, difficult is the life of mortals; Difficult is the hearing of the true Dhamma, difficult is the arising of Tathāgatas.

Ānandattherapañhavatthu Sabbapāpassa akaraṇaṁ, kusalassa upasampadā; Sacittapariyodapanaṁ, etaṁ buddhāna sāsanaṁ.

To abstain from all corrupt, to cultivate good, to purify one's mind, this is the teaching of the Tathāgatas.

Khantī paramaṁ tapo titikkhā, Nibbānaṁ paramaṁ vadanti buddhā; Na hi pabbajito parūpaghātī, Na samaṇo hoti paraṁ viheṭhayanto.

Patience is the highest austerity, Nibbāna is supreme, say the Tathāgatas; One who harms others is not a recluse, one who injures others is not a disciple.

Anūpavādo anūpaghāto, Pātimokkhe ca saṁvaro; Mattaññutā ca bhattasmiṁ, Pantañca sayanāsanaṁ; Adhicitte ca āyogo, Etaṁ buddhāna sāsanaṁ.

Not speaking ill, not harming, restraint in the Pātimokkha; Moderation in food, a secluded dwelling place, and devotion to higher development, this is the teaching of the Tathāgatas.

Anabhiratabhikkhuvatthu Na kahāpaṇavassena, titti kāmesu vijjati; Appassādā dukhā kāmā, iti viññāya paṇḍito.

Not by a shower of coins is there satisfaction in sensual pleasures; Knowing this, the wise one finds no delight even in heavenly pleasures;

Api dibbesu kāmesu, ratiṁ so nādhigacchati; Taṇhakkhayarato hoti, sammāsambuddhasāvako.

The disciple of the Fully Awakened One delights in the destruction of craving.

Aggidattabrāhmaṇavatthu Bahuṁ ve saraṇaṁ yanti, pabbatāni vanāni ca; Ārāmarukkhacetyāni, manussā bhayatajjitā. Netaṁ kho saraṇaṁ khemaṁ, netaṁ saraṇamuttamaṁ; Netaṁ saraṇamāgamma, sabbadukkhā pamuccati.

Many indeed go for refuge to mountains, forests, parks, and trees, driven by fear; This is not a secure refuge, this is not the supreme refuge; By going to this refuge, one is not freed from all suffering.

Yo ca buddhañca dhammañca, saṅghañca saraṇaṁ gato; Cattāri ariyasaccāni, sammappaññāya passati. Dukkhaṁ dukkhasamuppādaṁ, dukkhassa ca atikkamaṁ; Ariyaṁ caṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ, dukkhūpasamagāminaṁ.

But whoever goes for refuge to the Tathāgata, the Dhamma, and the Saṅgha, sees with right wisdom the Four Noble Truths: Suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the Noble Eightfold Path leading to the cessation of suffering.

Etaṁ kho saraṇaṁ khemaṁ, etaṁ saraṇamuttamaṁ; Etaṁ saraṇamāgamma, sabbadukkhā pamuccati.

This is a secure refuge, this is the supreme refuge; By going to this refuge, one is freed from all suffering.

Ānandattherapañhavatthu Dullabho purisājañño, na so sabbattha jāyati; Yattha so jāyati dhīro, taṁ kulaṁ sukhamedhati.

Rare is the birth of a noble person, he is not born everywhere; Wherever such a wise one is born, that family prospers.

Sambahulabhikkhuvatthu Sukho buddhānamuppādo, sukhā saddhammadesanā; Sukhā saṅghassa sāmaggī, samaggānaṁ tapo sukho.

Happy is the arising of Tathāgatas, happy is the teaching of the true Dhamma; Happy is the unity of the Saṅgha, happy is the practice of those in harmony.

Kassapadasabalassasuvaṇṇacetiyavatthu Pūjārahe pūjayato, buddhe yadi va sāvake; Papañcasamatikkante, tiṇṇasokapariddave. Te tādise pūjayato, nibbute akutobhaye; Na sakkā puññaṁ saṅkhātuṁ, imettamapi kenaci. Buddhavaggo cuddasamo. Paṭhamabhāṇavāraṁ.

For those who honor the worthy, whether Tathāgatas or disciples, who have transcended proliferation, who have crossed over sorrow and lamentation; For those who honor such ones, who are extinguished, fearless from any quarter, it is not possible to measure the merit, even if it is just this much.
