The Discourse on Emptiness

Suññakathā Evaṁ me sutaṁ— ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was staying at Sāvatthī in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.

Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.

Then, the Venerable Ānanda approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side.

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca— “‘Suñño loko, suñño loko’ti, bhante, vuccati.

While sitting to one side, the Venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One: Empty is the world, empty is the world, it is said, venerable sir.

Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, ‘suñño loko’ti vuccatī”ti?

In what respect is it said, venerable sir, Empty is the world?

“Yasmā kho, ānanda, suññaṁ attena vā attaniyena vā, tasmā ‘suñño loko’ti vuccati.

Because, Ānanda, it is empty of self or of what belongs to self, therefore it is said, Empty is the world.

Kiñcānanda, suññaṁ attena vā attaniyena vā?

What, Ānanda, is empty of self or of what belongs to self?
