Majjhima Nikāya 128 Upakkilesasutta Evaṁ me sutaṁ— ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosambiyaṁ viharati ghositārāme.

Upakkilesa Sutta

Thus have I heard: At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Kosambi, in Ghosita's Park.

Tena kho pana samayena kosambiyaṁ bhikkhū bhaṇḍanajātā kalahajātā vivādāpannā aññamaññaṁ mukhasattīhi vitudantā viharanti.

At that time, the disciples at Kosambi had become quarrelsome, disputatious, and were engaged in wrangling, verbally attacking each other.

Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.

Then a certain disciple approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and stood at one side.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “idha, bhante, kosambiyaṁ bhikkhū bhaṇḍanajātā kalahajātā vivādāpannā aññamaññaṁ mukhasattīhi vitudantā viharanti.

Standing at one side, that disciple said to the Blessed One: Here, venerable sir, the disciples at Kosambi have become quarrelsome, disputatious, and are engaged in wrangling, verbally attacking each other.

Sādhu, bhante, bhagavā yena te bhikkhū tenupasaṅkamatu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti.

It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would approach those disciples out of compassion.

Adhivāsesi bhagavā tuṇhībhāvena.

The Blessed One consented in silence.

Atha kho bhagavā yena te bhikkhū tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā te bhikkhū etadavoca: “alaṁ, bhikkhave, mā bhaṇḍanaṁ, mā kalahaṁ, mā viggahaṁ, mā vivādan”ti.

Then the Blessed One approached those disciples; having approached, he said to those disciples: Enough let there be no quarreling, no dispute, no wrangling, no contention.

Evaṁ vutte, aññataro bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “āgametu, bhante.

Having said this, a certain disciple said to the Blessed One: Let it be, venerable sir.

Bhagavā dhammassāmī; appossukko, bhante, bhagavā diṭṭhadhammasukhavihāraṁ anuyutto viharatu; mayametena bhaṇḍanena kalahena viggahena vivādena paññāyissāmā”ti. Dutiyampi kho bhagavā te bhikkhū etadavoca: “alaṁ, bhikkhave, mā bhaṇḍanaṁ, mā kalahaṁ, mā viggahaṁ, mā vivādan”ti.

The Blessed One is the master of the Dhamma; without concern, venerable sir, let the Blessed One dwell in blissful living here and now; we will be responsible for this quarreling, dispute, wrangling, and contention.

Dutiyampi kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “āgametu, bhante.

For a second time...

Bhagavā dhammassāmī; appossukko, bhante, bhagavā diṭṭhadhammasukhavihāraṁ anuyutto viharatu; mayametena bhaṇḍanena kalahena viggahena vivādena paññāyissāmā”ti.

For a third time, the Blessed One said to those disciples: Enough let there be no quarreling, no dispute, no wrangling, no contention.

Tatiyampi kho bhagavā te bhikkhū etadavoca: “alaṁ, bhikkhave, mā bhaṇḍanaṁ, mā kalahaṁ, mā viggahaṁ, mā vivādan”ti.

For a second time... For a third time, that disciple said to the Blessed One: Let it be, venerable sir.

Tatiyampi kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “āgametu, bhante. Bhagavā dhammassāmī; appossukko, bhante, bhagavā diṭṭhadhammasukhavihāraṁ anuyutto viharatu; mayametena bhaṇḍanena kalahena viggahena vivādena paññāyissāmā”ti.

The Blessed One is the master of the Dhamma; without concern, venerable sir, let the Blessed One dwell in blissful living here and now; we will be responsible for this quarreling, dispute, wrangling, and contention.

Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya kosambiṁ piṇḍāya pāvisi.

Then, in the morning, the Blessed One dressed, took his bowl and robe, and entered Kosambi for alms.

Kosambiyaṁ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṁ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto senāsanaṁ saṁsāmetvā pattacīvaramādāya ṭhitakova imā gāthā abhāsi: “Puthusaddo samajano, na bālo koci maññatha; Saṅghasmiṁ bhijjamānasmiṁ, nāññaṁ bhiyyo amaññaruṁ.

Having wandered for alms in Kosambi and after the meal, on returning from the alms round, having put away his bowl and robe, while standing, the Blessed One spoke these verses:

Parimuṭṭhā paṇḍitābhāsā, vācāgocarabhāṇino; Yāvicchanti mukhāyāmaṁ, yena nītā na taṁ vidū.

The sound of the multitude is sweet, let no one think it foolish; When the Sangha is splitting, none should think themselves better.

Akkocchi maṁ avadhi maṁ, ajini maṁ ahāsi me; Ye ca taṁ upanayhanti, veraṁ tesaṁ na sammati.

Confused, speaking as if wise, speaking out of turn; They want to declare themselves, not knowing the way they are led.

Akkocchi maṁ avadhi maṁ, ajini maṁ ahāsi me; Ye ca taṁ nupanayhanti, veraṁ tesūpasammati.

He abused me, he beat me, he defeated me, he robbed me; Those who harbor such thoughts, hatred does not cease.

Na hi verena verāni, sammantīdha kudācanaṁ; Averena ca sammanti, esa dhammo sanantano.

He abused me, he beat me, he defeated me, he robbed me; Those who do not harbor such thoughts, hatred ceases.

Pare ca na vijānanti, mayamettha yamāmase; Ye ca tattha vijānanti, tato sammanti medhagā.

For never by hatred is hatred appeased, here in this world; By non-hatred alone is it appeased, this is an eternal law.

Aṭṭhicchinnā pāṇaharā, gavassadhanahārino; Raṭṭhaṁ vilumpamānānaṁ, tesampi hoti saṅgati; Kasmā tumhākaṁ no siyā.

Others do not realize, that we are here in this world to live in harmony; Those who do realize this, their quarrels come to an end.

Even those who break bones and kill, steal cattle, wealth, and kingdom; Even for those who plunder a country, there comes a time of concord; So why not for you?

Sace labhetha nipakaṁ sahāyaṁ, Saddhiṁ caraṁ sādhuvihāri dhīraṁ; Abhibhuyya sabbāni parissayāni, Careyya tenattamano satīmā.

If you find a wise companion, to live with, in harmony and joy, overcoming all dangers, walk with them, mindful and awake.

No ce labhetha nipakaṁ sahāyaṁ, Saddhiṁ caraṁ sādhuvihāri dhīraṁ; Rājāva raṭṭhaṁ vijitaṁ pahāya, Eko care mātaṅgaraññeva nāgo.

If you find no wise companion, to live with, in harmony and joy, like a king leaving a conquered kingdom, walk alone like a tusker in the forest.

Ekassa caritaṁ seyyo, Natthi bāle sahāyatā; Eko care na ca pāpāni kayirā, Appossukko mātaṅgaraññeva nāgo”ti.

Better it is to walk alone, there is no companionship with the foolish; Walk alone, do no corrupt, at ease like a tusker in the forest.

Atha kho bhagavā ṭhitakova imā gāthā bhāsitvā yena bālakaloṇakāragāmo tenupasaṅkami.

After speaking these verses while standing, the Blessed One went to Bālakaloṇakāragāma.

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā bhagu bālakaloṇakāragāme viharati.

At that time, the venerable Bhagu was dwelling there.

Addasā kho āyasmā bhagu bhagavantaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ.

The venerable Bhagu saw the Blessed One coming from afar.

Disvāna āsanaṁ paññapesi udakañca pādānaṁ dhovanaṁ.

Having seen him, he arranged a seat and water for washing the feet.

Nisīdi bhagavā paññatte āsane. Nisajja pāde pakkhālesi.

The Blessed One sat down on the prepared seat and washed his feet.

Āyasmāpi kho bhagu bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.

The venerable Bhagu, having paid homage to the Blessed One, sat down at one side.

Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ bhaguṁ bhagavā etadavoca: “kacci, bhikkhu, khamanīyaṁ, kacci yāpanīyaṁ, kacci piṇḍakena na kilamasī”ti?

Sitting at one side, the Blessed One said to the venerable Bhagu: I hope you are getting along, disciple; I hope you are comfortable; I hope you are not having any trouble getting almsfood.

“Khamanīyaṁ bhagavā, yāpanīyaṁ bhagavā, na cāhaṁ, bhante, piṇḍakena kilamāmī”ti. Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ bhaguṁ dhammiyā kathāya sandassetvā samādapetvā samuttejetvā sampahaṁsetvā uṭṭhāyāsanā yena pācīnavaṁsadāyo tenupasaṅkami.

It is bearable, Blessed One; it is comfortable, venerable sir; and I am not having any trouble getting almsfood, replied the venerable Bhagu. Then the Blessed One, having given the venerable Bhagu a Dhamma talk, rose from his seat and went to Pācīnavamsadāya.

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā ca anuruddho āyasmā ca nandiyo āyasmā ca kimilo pācīnavaṁsadāye viharanti.

At that time, the venerable Anuruddha, the venerable Nandiya, and the venerable Kimila were dwelling at Pācīnavamsadāya.

Addasā kho dāyapālo bhagavantaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ.

The steward saw the Blessed One coming from afar.

Disvāna bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “mā, mahāsamaṇa, etaṁ dāyaṁ pāvisi.

Having seen him, he said: Do not, great recluse, enter this park.

Santettha tayo kulaputtā attakāmarūpā viharanti.

There are three clansmen here... The childless live for their own pleasure.

Mā tesaṁ aphāsumakāsī”ti.

Do not make it difficult for them.

Assosi kho āyasmā anuruddho dāyapālassa bhagavatā saddhiṁ mantayamānassa.

The venerable Anuruddha heard the householder discussing with the Blessed One.

Sutvāna dāyapālaṁ etadavoca: “mā, āvuso dāyapāla, bhagavantaṁ vāresi.

After hearing, he said to the householder: Friend householder, do not obstruct the Blessed One.

Satthā no bhagavā anuppatto”ti.

Our teacher, the Blessed One, has arrived.

Atha kho āyasmā anuruddho yenāyasmā ca nandiyo yenāyasmā ca kimilo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantañca nandiyaṁ āyasmantañca kimilaṁ etadavoca: “abhikkamathāyasmanto, abhikkamathāyasmanto, satthā no bhagavā anuppatto”ti.

Then the venerable Anuruddha approached the venerable Nandiya and the venerable Kimila; having approached, he said to the venerable Nandiya and the venerable Kimila: Come, venerables, come, venerables, our teacher, the Blessed One, has arrived.

Atha kho āyasmā ca anuruddho āyasmā ca nandiyo āyasmā ca kimilo bhagavantaṁ paccuggantvā eko bhagavato pattacīvaraṁ paṭiggahesi, eko āsanaṁ paññapesi, eko pādodakaṁ upaṭṭhapesi.

Then the venerable Anuruddha, the venerable Nandiya, and the venerable Kimila went to meet the Blessed One. One received the Blessed One's bowl and robe, one prepared a seat, and one set up water for washing the feet.

Nisīdi bhagavā paññatte āsane. Nisajja pāde pakkhālesi.

The Blessed One sat on the prepared seat and washed his feet.

Tepi kho āyasmanto bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu.

Those venerables, after paying homage to the Blessed One, sat down to one side.

Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ anuruddhaṁ bhagavā etadavoca: “kacci vo, anuruddhā, khamanīyaṁ, kacci yāpanīyaṁ, kacci piṇḍakena na kilamathā”ti?

Sitting to one side, the Blessed One said to the venerable Anuruddha: I hope you are getting along, Anuruddhas, I hope you are comfortable, I hope you are not fatigued by alms food.

“Khamanīyaṁ bhagavā, yāpanīyaṁ bhagavā, na ca mayaṁ, bhante, piṇḍakena kilamāmā”ti.

We are getting along, Blessed One, we are comfortable, and we are not fatigued by alms food, sir.

“Kacci pana vo, anuruddhā, samaggā sammodamānā avivadamānā khīrodakībhūtā aññamaññaṁ piyacakkhūhi sampassantā viharathā”ti?

I hope you, Anuruddhas, are living in harmony, with mutual appreciation, without disputing, blending like milk and water, viewing each other with kindly eyes.

“Taggha mayaṁ, bhante, samaggā sammodamānā avivadamānā khīrodakībhūtā aññamaññaṁ piyacakkhūhi sampassantā viharāmā”ti.

Indeed, sir, we are living in harmony, with mutual appreciation, without disputing, blending like milk and water, viewing each other with kindly eyes.

“Yathā kathaṁ pana tumhe, anuruddhā, samaggā sammodamānā avivadamānā khīrodakībhūtā aññamaññaṁ piyacakkhūhi sampassantā viharathā”ti?

But how do you, Anuruddhas, live in harmony, with mutual appreciation, without disputing, blending like milk and water, viewing each other with kindly eyes?

“Idha mayhaṁ, bhante, evaṁ hoti: ‘lābhā vata me, suladdhaṁ vata me yohaṁ evarūpehi sabrahmacārīhi saddhiṁ viharāmī’ti.

Here, sir, I think: It is gain for me, it is great gain for me that I am living with such companions in the holy life.

Tassa mayhaṁ, bhante, imesu āyasmantesu mettaṁ kāyakammaṁ paccupaṭṭhitaṁ āvi ceva raho ca, mettaṁ vacīkammaṁ paccupaṭṭhitaṁ āvi ceva raho ca, mettaṁ manokammaṁ paccupaṭṭhitaṁ āvi ceva raho ca.

In these venerables, goodwill by body is maintained both in public and in private; goodwill by speech is maintained both in public and in private; goodwill by mind is maintained both in public and in private.

Tassa, mayhaṁ, bhante, evaṁ hoti: ‘yannūnāhaṁ sakaṁ cittaṁ nikkhipitvā imesaṁyeva āyasmantānaṁ cittassa vasena vatteyyan’ti.

I think: Why should I not set aside what I wish to do and do what these venerables wish to do?

So kho ahaṁ, bhante, sakaṁ cittaṁ nikkhipitvā imesaṁyeva āyasmantānaṁ cittassa vasena vattāmi.

Thus, I set aside what I wish to do and do what these venerables wish to do.

Nānā hi kho no, bhante, kāyā, ekañca pana maññe cittan”ti.

We are different in body, sir, but one in mind.

Āyasmāpi kho nandiyo …pe…

The venerable Nandiya...

āyasmāpi kho kimilo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “mayhampi kho, bhante, evaṁ hoti: ‘lābhā vata me, suladdhaṁ vata me yohaṁ evarūpehi sabrahmacārīhi saddhiṁ viharāmī’ti.

The venerable Kimila said to the Blessed One: For me too, sir, it is as if I am living with such companions in the holy life.

Tassa mayhaṁ, bhante, evaṁ hoti: ‘yannūnāhaṁ sakaṁ cittaṁ nikkhipitvā imesaṁyeva āyasmantānaṁ cittassa vasena vatteyyan’ti.

Nānā hi kho no, bhante, kāyā, ekañca pana maññe cittanti.

We are different in body, sir, but one in mind.

Evaṁ kho mayaṁ, bhante, samaggā sammodamānā avivadamānā khīrodakībhūtā aññamaññaṁ piyacakkhūhi sampassantā viharāmā”ti.

Thus, sir, we are living in harmony, with mutual appreciation, without disputing, blending like milk and water, viewing each other with kindly eyes.

“Sādhu sādhu, anuruddhā.

Good, good, Anuruddhas.

Kacci pana vo, anuruddhā, appamattā ātāpino pahitattā viharathā”ti?

But are you, Anuruddhas, diligent, ardent, and resolute?

“Taggha mayaṁ, bhante, appamattā ātāpino pahitattā viharāmā”ti.

Indeed, sir, we are diligent, ardent, and resolute.

“Yathā kathaṁ pana tumhe, anuruddhā, appamattā ātāpino pahitattā viharathā”ti?

But how are you, Anuruddhas, diligent, ardent, and resolute?

“Idha, bhante, amhākaṁ yo paṭhamaṁ gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamati, so āsanāni paññapeti, pānīyaṁ paribhojanīyaṁ upaṭṭhāpeti, avakkārapātiṁ upaṭṭhāpeti.

Here, sir, whichever of us returns first from the village with alms food prepares the seats, sets out the drinking water and the food, and sets out the refuse bucket.

Yo pacchā gāmato piṇḍāya paṭikkamati—sace hoti bhuttāvaseso, sace ākaṅkhati, bhuñjati; no ce ākaṅkhati, appaharite vā chaḍḍeti apāṇake vā udake opilāpeti— so āsanāni paṭisāmeti, pānīyaṁ paribhojanīyaṁ paṭisāmeti, avakkārapātiṁ dhovitvā paṭisāmeti, bhattaggaṁ sammajjati.

Whichever of us returns last... if there is any food left over, if he wishes, he eats; if he does not wish, he throws it away where there is little or pours it away where there is water... He puts away the seats, the drinking water, and the food, washes the refuse bucket, and sweeps the dining hall.

Yo passati pānīyaghaṭaṁ vā paribhojanīyaghaṭaṁ vā vaccaghaṭaṁ vā rittaṁ tucchaṁ so upaṭṭhāpeti.

Whoever notices that the drinking water or the food water or the washing water is low or empty, sets it out.

Sacassa hoti avisayhaṁ, hatthavikārena dutiyaṁ āmantetvā hatthavilaṅghakena upaṭṭhāpema, na tveva mayaṁ, bhante, tappaccayā vācaṁ bhindāma.

If he has a bowl with a crack, he calls another by a sign with his hand and by raising his eyebrows, but we do not break out into speech for that reason.

Pañcāhikaṁ kho pana mayaṁ, bhante, sabbarattiṁ dhammiyā kathāya sannisīdāma.

Every five days, we sit together all night discussing the Dhamma.

Evaṁ kho mayaṁ, bhante, appamattā ātāpino pahitattā viharāmā”ti.

Thus, sir, we are diligent, ardent, and resolute.

“Sādhu sādhu, anuruddhā.

Good, good, Anuruddhas.

Atthi pana vo, anuruddhā, evaṁ appamattānaṁ ātāpīnaṁ pahitattānaṁ viharataṁ uttari manussadhammā alamariyañāṇadassanaviseso adhigato phāsuvihāro”ti?

But have you, Anuruddhas, attained any superhuman state, a distinction in knowing and vision worthy of the noble ones, a comfortable abiding?

“Idha mayaṁ, bhante, appamattā ātāpino pahitattā viharantā obhāsañceva sañjānāma dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

We, venerable sir, being diligent, ardent, and resolute, perceive both the light and the vision of forms.

So kho pana no obhāso nacirasseva antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ; tañca nimittaṁ nappaṭivijjhāmā”ti.

However, that light and the vision of forms disappear after a short while; we are unable to penetrate that sign.

“Taṁ kho pana vo, anuruddhā, nimittaṁ paṭivijjhitabbaṁ.

It is precisely that sign, Anuruddhas, that you should penetrate.

Ahampi sudaṁ, anuruddhā, pubbeva sambodhā anabhisambuddho bodhisattova samāno obhāsañceva sañjānāmi dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

Even I, Anuruddhas, before my enlightenment, while still an unenlightened Bodhisatta, perceived both the light and the vision of forms.

So kho pana me obhāso nacirasseva antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

However, that light and the vision of forms disappeared after a short while.

Tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘ko nu kho hetu ko paccayo yena me obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānan’ti?

It occurred to me, Anuruddhas: What is the cause, what is the reason why the light disappears and the vision of forms?

Tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘vicikicchā kho me udapādi, vicikicchādhikaraṇañca pana me samādhi cavi.

It occurred to me, Anuruddhas: Doubt arose in me, and because of doubt, my concentration fell away.

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

When concentration fell away, the light disappeared and the vision of forms.

Sohaṁ tathā karissāmi yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissatī’ti.

I shall act in such a way that doubt will not arise in me again.

So kho ahaṁ, anuruddhā, appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto obhāsañceva sañjānāmi dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

Thus, I, Anuruddhas, being diligent, ardent, and resolute, perceived both the light and the vision of forms.

Tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘amanasikāro kho me udapādi, amanasikārādhikaraṇañca pana me samādhi cavi.

It occurred to me, Anuruddhas: Inattention arose in me, and because of inattention, my concentration fell away.

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

When concentration fell away, the light disappeared and the vision of forms.

Sohaṁ tathā karissāmi yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissati, na amanasikāro’ti.

I shall act in such a way that doubt will not arise in me again, nor inattention.

So kho ahaṁ, anuruddhā …pe… tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘thinamiddhaṁ kho me udapādi, thinamiddhādhikaraṇañca pana me samādhi cavi.

It occurred to me, Anuruddhas: Sloth and torpor arose in me, and because of sloth and torpor, my concentration fell away.

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

When concentration fell away, the light disappeared and the vision of forms.

Sohaṁ tathā karissāmi yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissati, na amanasikāro, na thinamiddhan’ti. So kho ahaṁ, anuruddhā …pe…

I shall act in such a way that doubt will not arise in me again, nor inattention, nor sloth and torpor.

tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘chambhitattaṁ kho me udapādi, chambhitattādhikaraṇañca pana me samādhi cavi.

It occurred to me, Anuruddhas: Fear arose in me, and because of fear, my concentration fell away.

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

When concentration fell away, the light disappeared and the vision of forms.

Seyyathāpi, anuruddhā, puriso addhānamaggappaṭipanno, tassa ubhatopasse vaṭṭakā uppateyyuṁ, tassa tatonidānaṁ chambhitattaṁ uppajjeyya; evameva kho me, anuruddhā, chambhitattaṁ udapādi, chambhitattādhikaraṇañca pana me samādhi cavi.

Just as, Anuruddhas, a person on a journey might become frightened if quails were to burst out on both sides, so fear arose in me, and because of fear, my concentration fell away.

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

When concentration fell away, the light disappeared and the vision of forms.

Sohaṁ tathā karissāmi yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissati, na amanasikāro, na thinamiddhaṁ, na chambhitattan’ti.

I shall act in such a way that doubt will not arise in me again, nor inattention, nor sloth and torpor, nor fear.

So kho ahaṁ, anuruddhā …pe… tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘uppilaṁ kho me udapādi, uppilādhikaraṇañca pana me samādhi cavi.

It occurred to me, Anuruddhas: Restlessness arose in me, and because of restlessness, my concentration fell away.

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

When concentration fell away, the light disappeared and the vision of forms.

Seyyathāpi, anuruddhā, puriso ekaṁ nidhimukhaṁ gavesanto sakideva pañcanidhimukhāni adhigaccheyya, tassa tatonidānaṁ uppilaṁ uppajjeyya; evameva kho me, anuruddhā, uppilaṁ udapādi, uppilādhikaraṇañca pana me samādhi cavi.

Just as, Anuruddhas, a person searching for one treasure might suddenly find five treasures, so restlessness arose in me, and because of restlessness, my concentration fell away.

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

When concentration fell away, the light disappeared and the vision of forms.

Sohaṁ tathā karissāmi yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissati, na amanasikāro, na thinamiddhaṁ, na chambhitattaṁ, na uppilan’ti.

I shall act in such a way that doubt will not arise in me again, nor inattention, nor sloth and torpor, nor fear, nor restlessness.

So kho ahaṁ, anuruddhā …pe… tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘duṭṭhullaṁ kho me udapādi, duṭṭhullādhikaraṇañca pana me samādhi cavi.

It occurred to me, Anuruddhas: Coarse behavior arose in me, and because of coarse behavior, my concentration fell away.

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

When concentration fell away, the light disappeared and the vision of forms.

Sohaṁ tathā karissāmi yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissati, na amanasikāro, na thinamiddhaṁ, na chambhitattaṁ, na uppilaṁ, na duṭṭhullan’ti.

I shall act in such a way that doubt will not arise in me again, nor inattention, nor sloth and torpor, nor fear, nor restlessness, nor coarse behavior.

So kho ahaṁ, anuruddhā …pe…

Thus, I, Anuruddhas...

tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘accāraddhavīriyaṁ kho me udapādi, accāraddhavīriyādhikaraṇañca pana me samādhi cavi.

It occurred to me, Anuruddhas: Excessive energy arose in me, and because of excessive energy, my concentration fell away.

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

When concentration fell away, the light disappeared and the vision of forms.

Seyyathāpi, anuruddhā, puriso ubhohi hatthehi vaṭṭakaṁ gāḷhaṁ gaṇheyya, so tattheva patameyya; evameva kho me, anuruddhā, accāraddhavīriyaṁ udapādi, accāraddhavīriyādhikaraṇañca pana me samādhi cavi.

Just as, Anuruddhas, a person might grasp a quail too tightly with both hands, causing it to die right there, so excessive energy arose in me, and because of excessive energy, my concentration fell away.

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

When concentration fell away, the light disappeared and the vision of forms.

Sohaṁ tathā karissāmi yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissati, na amanasikāro, na thinamiddhaṁ, na chambhitattaṁ, na uppilaṁ, na duṭṭhullaṁ, na accāraddhavīriyan’ti.

I shall act in such a way that doubt will not arise in me again, nor inattention, nor sloth and torpor, nor fear, nor restlessness, nor coarse behavior, nor excessive energy.

So kho ahaṁ, anuruddhā …pe…

Thus, I, Anuruddhas...

tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘atilīnavīriyaṁ kho me udapādi, atilīnavīriyādhikaraṇañca pana me samādhi cavi.

It occurred to me, Anuruddhas: Insufficient energy arose in me, and because of insufficient energy, my concentration fell away.

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

When concentration fell away, the light disappeared and the vision of forms.

Seyyathāpi, anuruddhā, puriso vaṭṭakaṁ sithilaṁ gaṇheyya, so tassa hatthato uppateyya; evameva kho me, anuruddhā, atilīnavīriyaṁ udapādi, atilīnavīriyādhikaraṇañca pana me samādhi cavi. Samādhimhi cute obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

In the darkness, the light and the vision of forms disappear. Just as, Anuruddha, if a person were to grasp a weak ball of string, it would fall from his hand; in the same way, excessive energy arose in me, and because of this excessive energy, my concentration was lost.

Sohaṁ tathā karissāmi yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissati, na amanasikāro, na thinamiddhaṁ, na chambhitattaṁ, na uppilaṁ, na duṭṭhullaṁ, na accāraddhavīriyaṁ, na atilīnavīriyan’ti. So kho ahaṁ, anuruddhā …pe…

When concentration is lost, the light disappears along with the vision of forms.

Thus, I will act in such a way that doubt, inattention, sloth and torpor, fear, restlessness, coarseness, insufficient energy, and excessive energy will not arise in me again.

tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘abhijappā kho me udapādi, abhijappādhikaraṇañca pana me samādhi cavi.

Then, Anuruddha, it occurred to me: Craving arose in me, and because of this craving, my concentration was lost.

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

When concentration is lost, the light disappears along with the vision of forms.

Sohaṁ tathā karissāmi yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissati, na amanasikāro, na thinamiddhaṁ, na chambhitattaṁ, na uppilaṁ, na duṭṭhullaṁ, na accāraddhavīriyaṁ, na atilīnavīriyaṁ, na abhijappā’ti.

Thus, I will act in such a way that doubt, inattention, sloth and torpor, fear, restlessness, coarseness, insufficient energy, excessive energy, and craving will not arise in me again.

So kho ahaṁ, anuruddhā …pe… tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘nānattasaññā kho me udapādi, nānattasaññādhikaraṇañca pana me samādhi cavi.

Then, Anuruddha, it occurred to me: The perception of diversity arose in me, and because of this perception of diversity, my concentration was lost.

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

When concentration is lost, the light disappears along with the vision of forms.

Sohaṁ tathā karissāmi yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissati, na amanasikāro, na thinamiddhaṁ, na chambhitattaṁ, na uppilaṁ, na duṭṭhullaṁ, na accāraddhavīriyaṁ, na atilīnavīriyaṁ, na abhijappā, na nānattasaññā’ti.

Thus, I will act in such a way that doubt, inattention, sloth and torpor, fear, restlessness, coarseness, insufficient energy, excessive energy, craving, and the perception of diversity will not arise in me again.

So kho ahaṁ, anuruddhā, appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto obhāsañceva sañjānāmi dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

Being diligent, ardent, and resolute, I perceive the light and the vision of forms.

So kho pana me obhāso nacirasseva antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

However, the light soon disappears along with the vision of forms.

Tassa mayhaṁ anuruddhā etadahosi: ‘ko nu kho hetu ko paccayo yena me obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānan’ti.

It occurred to me, Anuruddha, what is the cause and condition for the disappearance of the light and the vision of forms?

Tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘atinijjhāyitattaṁ kho me rūpānaṁ udapādi, atinijjhāyitattādhikaraṇañca pana me rūpānaṁ samādhi cavi.

It occurred to me: Over contemplation of forms arose in me, and because of this over contemplation, my concentration on forms was lost.

Samādhimhi cute obhāso antaradhāyati dassanañca rūpānaṁ.

When concentration is lost, the light disappears along with the vision of forms.

Sohaṁ tathā karissāmi yathā me puna na vicikicchā uppajjissati, na amanasikāro, na thinamiddhaṁ, na chambhitattaṁ, na uppilaṁ, na duṭṭhullaṁ, na accāraddhavīriyaṁ, na atilīnavīriyaṁ, na abhijappā, na nānattasaññā, na atinijjhāyitattaṁ rūpānan’ti.

Thus, I will act in such a way that doubt, inattention, sloth and torpor, fear, restlessness, coarseness, insufficient energy, excessive energy, craving, the perception of diversity, and over contemplation of forms will not arise in me again.

So kho ahaṁ, anuruddhā, ‘vicikicchā cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā vicikicchaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahiṁ, ‘amanasikāro cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā amanasikāraṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahiṁ, ‘thinamiddhaṁ cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā thinamiddhaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahiṁ, ‘chambhitattaṁ cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā chambhitattaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahiṁ, ‘uppilaṁ cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā uppilaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahiṁ, ‘duṭṭhullaṁ cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā duṭṭhullaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahiṁ, ‘accāraddhavīriyaṁ cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā accāraddhavīriyaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahiṁ, ‘atilīnavīriyaṁ cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā atilīnavīriyaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahiṁ, ‘abhijappā cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā abhijappaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahiṁ, ‘nānattasaññā cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā nānattasaññaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahiṁ, ‘atinijjhāyitattaṁ rūpānaṁ cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā atinijjhāyitattaṁ rūpānaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahiṁ.

Knowing that doubt is a corruption of the mind, I abandoned doubt; knowing that inattention is a corruption of the mind, I abandoned inattention; knowing that sloth and torpor are corruptions of the mind, I abandoned sloth and torpor; knowing that fear is a corruption of the mind, I abandoned fear; knowing that restlessness is a corruption of the mind, I abandoned restlessness; knowing that coarseness is a corruption of the mind, I abandoned coarseness; knowing that insufficient energy is a corruption of the mind, I abandoned insufficient energy; knowing that excessive energy is a corruption of the mind, I abandoned excessive energy; knowing that craving is a corruption of the mind, I abandoned craving; knowing that the perception of diversity is a corruption of the mind, I abandoned the perception of diversity; knowing that over contemplation of forms is a corruption of the mind, I abandoned over contemplation of forms.

Being diligent, ardent, and resolute, I perceive the light but do not see forms; I see forms but do not perceive the light, whether it be night, day, or both night and day.

So kho ahaṁ, anuruddhā, appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto obhāsañhi kho sañjānāmi, na ca rūpāni passāmi; rūpāni hi kho passāmi, na ca obhāsaṁ sañjānāmi: ‘kevalampi rattiṁ, kevalampi divaṁ, kevalampi rattindivaṁ’.

It occurred to me, Anuruddha, what is the cause and condition why I perceive the light but do not see forms; I see forms but do not perceive the light, whether it be night, day, or both night and day?

Tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘ko nu kho hetu ko paccayo yvāhaṁ obhāsañhi kho sañjānāmi na ca rūpāni passāmi; rūpāni hi kho passāmi na ca obhāsaṁ sañjānāmi— kevalampi rattiṁ, kevalampi divaṁ, kevalampi rattindivan’ti.

It occurred to me: When I focus on the sign of light without paying attention to the sign of forms, I perceive the light at that time but do not see forms.

Tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘yasmiñhi kho ahaṁ samaye rūpanimittaṁ amanasikaritvā obhāsanimittaṁ manasi karomi, obhāsañhi kho tasmiṁ samaye sañjānāmi, na ca rūpāni passāmi.

When I focus on the sign of forms without paying attention to the sign of light, I see forms at that time but do not perceive the light, whether it be night, day, or both night and day.

Yasmiṁ panāhaṁ samaye obhāsanimittaṁ amanasikaritvā rūpanimittaṁ manasi karomi, rūpāni hi kho tasmiṁ samaye passāmi na ca obhāsaṁ sañjānāmi— kevalampi rattiṁ, kevalampi divaṁ, kevalampi rattindivan’ti.

I perceive a limited light and see limited forms; I perceive an immeasurable light and see immeasurable forms: Just the night, just the day, just night and day.

So kho ahaṁ, anuruddhā, appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto parittañceva obhāsaṁ sañjānāmi, parittāni ca rūpāni passāmi; appamāṇañceva obhāsaṁ sañjānāmi, appamāṇāni ca rūpāni passāmi: ‘kevalampi rattiṁ, kevalampi divaṁ, kevalampi rattindivaṁ’.

It occurred to me, Anuruddha, What is the cause, what is the reason why I perceive a limited light and see limited forms; perceive an immeasurable light and see immeasurable forms: just the night, just the day, just night and day?

Tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘ko nu kho hetu ko paccayo yvāhaṁ parittañceva obhāsaṁ sañjānāmi, parittāni ca rūpāni passāmi; appamāṇañceva obhāsaṁ sañjānāmi, appamāṇāni ca rūpāni passāmi— kevalampi rattiṁ, kevalampi divaṁ, kevalampi rattindivan’ti.

It occurred to me, Anuruddha, When my concentration is limited, at that time my vision is limited. Thus, with limited vision, I perceive a limited light and see limited forms. When my concentration is immeasurable, at that time my vision is immeasurable.

Tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘yasmiṁ kho me samaye paritto samādhi hoti, parittaṁ me tasmiṁ samaye cakkhu hoti.

Thus, with immeasurable vision, I perceive an immeasurable light and see immeasurable forms: just the night, just the day, just night and day.

Sohaṁ parittena cakkhunā parittañceva obhāsaṁ sañjānāmi, parittāni ca rūpāni passāmi. Yasmiṁ pana me samaye appamāṇo samādhi hoti, appamāṇaṁ me tasmiṁ samaye cakkhu hoti. Sohaṁ appamāṇena cakkhunā appamāṇañceva obhāsaṁ sañjānāmi, appamāṇāni ca rūpāni passāmi— kevalampi rattiṁ, kevalampi divaṁ, kevalampi rattindivan’ti. Yato kho me, anuruddhā, ‘vicikicchā cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā vicikicchā cittassa upakkileso pahīno ahosi, ‘amanasikāro cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā amanasikāro cittassa upakkileso pahīno ahosi, ‘thinamiddhaṁ cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā thinamiddhaṁ cittassa upakkileso pahīno ahosi, ‘chambhitattaṁ cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā chambhitattaṁ cittassa upakkileso pahīno ahosi, ‘uppilaṁ cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā uppilaṁ cittassa upakkileso pahīno ahosi, ‘duṭṭhullaṁ cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā duṭṭhullaṁ cittassa upakkileso pahīno ahosi, ‘accāraddhavīriyaṁ cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā accāraddhavīriyaṁ cittassa upakkileso pahīno ahosi, ‘atilīnavīriyaṁ cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā atilīnavīriyaṁ cittassa upakkileso pahīno ahosi, ‘abhijappā cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā abhijappā cittassa upakkileso pahīno ahosi, ‘nānattasaññā cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā nānattasaññā cittassa upakkileso pahīno ahosi, ‘atinijjhāyitattaṁ rūpānaṁ cittassa upakkileso’ti—iti viditvā atinijjhāyitattaṁ rūpānaṁ cittassa upakkileso pahīno ahosi.

When I knew, Anuruddha, Doubt is a defilement of the mind: having known this, doubt as a defilement of the mind was abandoned; Inattention is a defilement of the mind: having known this, inattention as a defilement of the mind was abandoned;

Sloth and torpor are defilements of the mind: having known this, sloth and torpor as defilements of the mind were abandoned; Fear is a defilement of the mind: having known this, fear as a defilement of the mind was abandoned; Agitation is a defilement of the mind: having known this, agitation as a defilement of the mind was abandoned; Resistance is a defilement of the mind: having known this, resistance as a defilement of the mind was abandoned; Excessive energy is a defilement of the mind: having known this, excessive energy as a defilement of the mind was abandoned; Insufficient energy is a defilement of the mind: having known this, insufficient energy as a defilement of the mind was abandoned; Longing is a defilement of the mind: having known this, longing as a defilement of the mind was abandoned; Perceiving diversity is a defilement of the mind: having known this, perceiving diversity as a defilement of the mind was abandoned; Excessive contemplation on forms is a defilement of the mind: having known this, excessive contemplation on forms as a defilement of the mind was abandoned.

It occurred to me, Anuruddha, The defilements of my mind have been abandoned. Let me now develop the threefold concentration.

Tassa mayhaṁ, anuruddhā, etadahosi: ‘ye kho me cittassa upakkilesā te me pahīnā. Handa dānāhaṁ tividhena samādhiṁ bhāvemī’ti. So kho ahaṁ, anuruddhā, savitakkampi savicāraṁ samādhiṁ bhāvesiṁ, avitakkampi vicāramattaṁ samādhiṁ bhāvesiṁ, avitakkampi avicāraṁ samādhiṁ bhāvesiṁ, sappītikampi samādhiṁ bhāvesiṁ, nippītikampi samādhiṁ bhāvesiṁ, sātasahagatampi samādhiṁ bhāvesiṁ, upekkhāsahagatampi samādhiṁ bhāvesiṁ. Yato kho me, anuruddhā, savitakkopi savicāro samādhi bhāvito ahosi, avitakkopi vicāramatto samādhi bhāvito ahosi, avitakkopi avicāro samādhi bhāvito ahosi, sappītikopi samādhi bhāvito ahosi, nippītikopi samādhi bhāvito ahosi, sātasahagatopi samādhi bhāvito ahosi, upekkhāsahagatopi samādhi bhāvito ahosi.

Thus, Anuruddha, I developed concentration with initial application and sustained application, concentration without initial application but with only sustained application, concentration without initial application or sustained application, concentration accompanied by happiness, concentration without happiness, concentration accompanied by pleasure, and concentration accompanied by equanimity.

When, Anuruddha, concentration with initial application and sustained application was developed, concentration without initial application but with only sustained application was developed, concentration without initial application or sustained application was developed, concentration accompanied by happiness was developed, concentration without happiness was developed, concentration accompanied by pleasure was developed, concentration accompanied by equanimity was developed.

Ñāṇañca pana me dassanaṁ udapādi, akuppā me cetovimutti.

Knowing and vision arose in me, my liberation of mind is unshakable.

Ayamantimā jāti, natthi dāni punabbhavo”ti.

This is my last birth, now there is no more rebirth.

Idamavoca bhagavā.

Thus spoke the Blessed One.

Attamano āyasmā anuruddho bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandīti.

The venerable Anuruddha was pleased and rejoiced in the Blessed One's words.

Upakkilesasuttaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ aṭṭhamaṁ.

The Discourse on Defilements is finished.
