Majjhima Nikāya 15 Anumānasutta Evaṁ me sutaṁ— ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā mahāmoggallāno bhaggesu viharati susumāragire bhesakaḷāvane migadāye.

Anumānasutta

Thus have I heard: On one occasion, the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna was dwelling among the Bhaggas at Susumāragira in the Bhesakaḷā Forest, in the Deer Park.

Tatra kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno bhikkhū āmantesi: “āvuso bhikkhavo”ti.

There, the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna addressed the disciples, Friends, disciples.

“Āvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato mahāmoggallānassa paccassosuṁ. Āyasmā mahāmoggallāno etadavoca: “Pavāreti cepi, āvuso, bhikkhu: ‘vadantu maṁ āyasmanto, vacanīyomhi āyasmantehī’ti, so ca hoti dubbaco, dovacassakaraṇehi dhammehi samannāgato, akkhamo appadakkhiṇaggāhī anusāsaniṁ, atha kho naṁ sabrahmacārī na ceva vattabbaṁ maññanti, na ca anusāsitabbaṁ maññanti, na ca tasmiṁ puggale vissāsaṁ āpajjitabbaṁ maññanti.

The Venerable Mahāmoggallāna said this: If, friends, a disciple invites criticism, saying, Let the venerable ones speak to me, I am open to being admonished by the venerable ones, but he is difficult to admonish, possessing qualities that make him difficult to admonish, intolerant, and not accepting guidance, then his fellow disciples do not think he should be spoken to, nor do they think he should be instructed, nor do they think they should place trust in that person.

Katame cāvuso, dovacassakaraṇā dhammā?

And what, friends, are the qualities that make one difficult to admonish?

Idhāvuso, bhikkhu pāpiccho hoti, pāpikānaṁ icchānaṁ vasaṁ gato.

Here, friends, a disciple is of unwholesome desires, led by unwholesome desires.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu pāpiccho hoti, pāpikānaṁ icchānaṁ vasaṁ gato— ayampi dhammo dovacassakaraṇo.

When, friends, a disciple is of unwholesome desires, led by unwholesome desires: this is a quality that makes one difficult to admonish.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu attukkaṁsako hoti paravambhī.

Furthermore, friends, a disciple is self-praising and disparaging of others.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu attukkaṁsako hoti paravambhī— ayampi dhammo dovacassakaraṇo.

When, friends, a disciple is self-praising and disparaging of others: this is a quality that makes one difficult to admonish.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu kodhano hoti kodhābhibhūto.

The Venerable Mahāmoggallāna continued: Furthermore, friends, a disciple is angry, overcome by anger.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu kodhano hoti kodhābhibhūto— ayampi dhammo dovacassakaraṇo.

When, friends, a disciple is angry, overcome by anger: this is a quality that makes one difficult to admonish.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu kodhano hoti kodhahetu upanāhī.

Furthermore, friends, a disciple is angry and holds a grudge because of anger.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu kodhano hoti kodhahetu upanāhī— ayampi dhammo dovacassakaraṇo.

When, friends, a disciple is angry and holds a grudge because of anger: this is a quality that makes one difficult to admonish.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu kodhano hoti kodhahetu abhisaṅgī.

Furthermore, friends, a disciple is angry and becomes resentful because of anger.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu kodhano hoti kodhahetu abhisaṅgī— ayampi dhammo dovacassakaraṇo.

When, friends, a disciple is angry and becomes resentful because of anger: this is a quality that makes one difficult to admonish.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu kodhano hoti kodhasāmantā vācaṁ nicchāretā.

Furthermore, friends, a disciple is angry and speaks harsh words because of anger.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu kodhano hoti kodhasāmantā vācaṁ nicchāretā— ayampi dhammo dovacassakaraṇo.

When, friends, a disciple is angry and speaks harsh words because of anger: this is a quality that makes one difficult to admonish.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena codakaṁ paṭippharati. Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena codakaṁ paṭippharati— ayampi dhammo dovacassakaraṇo.

The Venerable Mahāmoggallāna said: Furthermore, friends, a disciple, when reproved by a reprover, retaliates against the reprover.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena codakaṁ apasādeti. Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena codakaṁ apasādeti— ayampi dhammo dovacassakaraṇo.

When, friends, a disciple, when reproved by a reprover, retaliates against the reprover: this is a quality that makes one difficult to admonish.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena codakassa paccāropeti.

Furthermore, friends, a disciple, when reproved by a reprover, disparages the reprover.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena codakassa paccāropeti— ayampi dhammo dovacassakaraṇo. Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena aññenaññaṁ paṭicarati, bahiddhā kathaṁ apanāmeti, kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukaroti.

When, friends, a disciple, when reproved by a reprover, disparages the reprover: this is a quality that makes one difficult to admonish. Furthermore, friends, a disciple, when reproved by a reprover, accuses the reprover.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena aññenaññaṁ paṭicarati, bahiddhā kathaṁ apanāmeti, kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukaroti— ayampi dhammo dovacassakaraṇo.

Friends, when a disciple, being admonished by an admonisher, retaliates against the admonisher, this is a trait that makes one difficult to admonish.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena apadāne na sampāyati. Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena apadāne na sampāyati— ayampi dhammo dovacassakaraṇo. Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu makkhī hoti paḷāsī.

Furthermore, friends, when a disciple, being admonished by an admonisher, evades the issue, diverts the conversation, and displays anger, resentment, and displeasure, this is also a trait that makes one difficult to admonish.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu makkhī hoti paḷāsī— ayampi dhammo dovacassakaraṇo. Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu issukī hoti maccharī.

Moreover, friends, when a disciple, being admonished by an admonisher, does not engage in the matter, this too is a trait that makes one difficult to admonish.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu issukī hoti maccharī— ayampi dhammo dovacassakaraṇo. Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu saṭho hoti māyāvī.

Additionally, friends, when a disciple is deceitful and hypocritical, this is a trait that makes one difficult to admonish.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu saṭho hoti māyāvī— ayampi dhammo dovacassakaraṇo. Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu thaddho hoti atimānī.

Furthermore, friends, when a disciple is envious and stingy, this is a trait that makes one difficult to admonish.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu thaddho hoti atimānī— ayampi dhammo dovacassakaraṇo.

Moreover, friends, when a disciple is fraudulent and deceitful, this is a trait that makes one difficult to admonish.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu sandiṭṭhiparāmāsī hoti ādhānaggāhī duppaṭinissaggī.

Additionally, friends, when a disciple is obstinate and arrogant, this is a trait that makes one difficult to admonish.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu sandiṭṭhiparāmāsī hoti ādhānaggāhī duppaṭinissaggī— ayampi dhammo dovacassakaraṇo. Ime vuccantāvuso, dovacassakaraṇā dhammā.

Furthermore, friends, when a disciple clings to his views, is tenacious, and difficult to relinquish, this is a trait that makes one difficult to admonish.

No cepi, āvuso, bhikkhu pavāreti: ‘vadantu maṁ āyasmanto, vacanīyomhi āyasmantehī’ti, so ca hoti suvaco, sovacassakaraṇehi dhammehi samannāgato, khamo padakkhiṇaggāhī anusāsaniṁ, atha kho naṁ sabrahmacārī vattabbañceva maññanti, anusāsitabbañca maññanti, tasmiñca puggale vissāsaṁ āpajjitabbaṁ maññanti. Katame cāvuso, sovacassakaraṇā dhammā? Idhāvuso, bhikkhu na pāpiccho hoti, na pāpikānaṁ icchānaṁ vasaṁ gato. Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu na pāpiccho hoti na pāpikānaṁ icchānaṁ vasaṁ gato— ayampi dhammo sovacassakaraṇo.

These, friends, are called traits that make one difficult to admonish. Even if, friends, a disciple invites others, saying, Let the venerable ones speak to me, I am open to being admonished by the venerable ones, and he is indeed easy to admonish, endowed with traits that make one easy to admonish, patient, and accepting of guidance, then his fellow practitioners consider him worthy of being spoken to, worthy of being admonished, and they think he is someone in whom trust should be placed.

And what, friends, are the traits that make one easy to admonish?

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu anattukkaṁsako hoti aparavambhī.

Here, friends, a disciple is not covetous, not led by unwholesome desires.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu anattukkaṁsako hoti aparavambhī— ayampi dhammo sovacassakaraṇo. Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu na kodhano hoti na kodhābhibhūto.

This is a trait that makes one easy to admonish.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu na kodhano hoti na kodhābhibhūto— ayampi dhammo sovacassakaraṇo.

Furthermore, friends, a disciple is not boastful, not disparaging of others.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu na kodhano hoti na kodhahetu upanāhī.

This is a trait that makes one easy to admonish.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu na kodhano hoti na kodhahetu upanāhī— ayampi dhammo sovacassakaraṇo.

Moreover, friends, a disciple is not angry, not overcome by anger.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu na kodhano hoti na kodhahetu abhisaṅgī. Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu na kodhano hoti na kodhahetu abhisaṅgī— ayampi dhammo sovacassakaraṇo. Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu na kodhano hoti na kodhasāmantā vācaṁ nicchāretā.

Friends, a disciple is not angry and not overcome by anger: this is a quality that makes one easy to instruct. Furthermore, friends, a disciple is not angry and does not harbor resentment due to anger: this is a quality that makes one easy to instruct.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu na kodhano hoti na kodhasāmantā vācaṁ nicchāretā— ayampi dhammo sovacassakaraṇo.

Again, friends, a disciple is not angry and does not cling to anger: this is a quality that makes one easy to instruct.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena codakaṁ nappaṭippharati. Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena codakaṁ nappaṭippharati— ayampi dhammo sovacassakaraṇo.

Furthermore, friends, a disciple is not angry and does not speak harsh words due to anger: this is a quality that makes one easy to instruct.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena codakaṁ na apasādeti. Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena codakaṁ na apasādeti— ayampi dhammo sovacassakaraṇo.

Again, friends, a disciple, when reproved by a reprover, does not retaliate against the reprover: this is a quality that makes one easy to instruct.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena codakassa na paccāropeti. Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena codakassa na paccāropeti— ayampi dhammo sovacassakaraṇo.

Furthermore, friends, a disciple, when reproved by a reprover, does not disparage the reprover: this is a quality that makes one easy to instruct.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena na aññenaññaṁ paṭicarati, na bahiddhā kathaṁ apanāmeti, na kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukaroti.

Again, friends, a disciple, when reproved by a reprover, does not accuse the reprover: this is a quality that makes one easy to instruct.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena na aññenaññaṁ paṭicarati, na bahiddhā kathaṁ apanāmeti, na kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukaroti— ayampi dhammo sovacassakaraṇo. Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena apadāne sampāyati.

Furthermore, friends, a disciple, when reproved by a reprover, does not evade the issue, does not divert the conversation, and does not display anger, hatred, or discontent: this is a quality that makes one easy to instruct.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu codito codakena apadāne sampāyati— ayampi dhammo sovacassakaraṇo. Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu amakkhī hoti apaḷāsī.

Again, friends, a disciple, when reproved by a reprover, is in harmony with the reprover: this is a quality that makes one easy to instruct.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu amakkhī hoti apaḷāsī— ayampi dhammo sovacassakaraṇo. Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu anissukī hoti amaccharī.

Furthermore, friends, a disciple is not boastful and not deceitful: this is a quality that makes one easy to instruct.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu anissukī hoti amaccharī— ayampi dhammo sovacassakaraṇo.

Again, friends, a disciple is not envious and not stingy: this is a quality that makes one easy to instruct.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu asaṭho hoti amāyāvī. Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu asaṭho hoti amāyāvī— ayampi dhammo sovacassakaraṇo.

Furthermore, friends, a disciple is not deceitful and not hypocritical: this is a quality that makes one easy to instruct.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu atthaddho hoti anatimānī. Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu atthaddho hoti anatimānī— ayampi dhammo sovacassakaraṇo.

Again, friends, a disciple is not arrogant and not conceited: this is a quality that makes one easy to instruct.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu asandiṭṭhiparāmāsī hoti anādhānaggāhī suppaṭinissaggī.

Indeed, friend, when a disciple is not arrogant and not conceited, this quality makes him easy to instruct.

Yaṁpāvuso, bhikkhu asandiṭṭhiparāmāsī hoti, anādhānaggāhī suppaṭinissaggī— ayampi dhammo sovacassakaraṇo.

Furthermore, friend, when a disciple is not attached to views, not clinging, and easily lets go, this quality also makes him easy to instruct.

Ime vuccantāvuso, sovacassakaraṇā dhammā.

These are called, friend, the qualities that make one easy to instruct.

Tatrāvuso, bhikkhunā attanāva attānaṁ evaṁ anuminitabbaṁ: ‘yo khvāyaṁ puggalo pāpiccho, pāpikānaṁ icchānaṁ vasaṁ gato, ayaṁ me puggalo appiyo amanāpo; ahañceva kho panassaṁ pāpiccho pāpikānaṁ icchānaṁ vasaṁ gato, ahampāssaṁ paresaṁ appiyo amanāpo’ti.

Therefore, friend, a disciple should reflect on himself in this way: This person who is of bad desires, who is led by bad desires, is disagreeable and unpleasant to me. If I were of bad desires and led by bad desires, I would be disagreeable and unpleasant to others.

Evaṁ jānantenāvuso, bhikkhunā ‘na pāpiccho bhavissāmi, na pāpikānaṁ icchānaṁ vasaṁ gato’ti cittaṁ uppādetabbaṁ.

Knowing this, friend, a disciple should generate the thought, I will not be of bad desires, nor will I be led by bad desires.

‘Yo khvāyaṁ puggalo attukkaṁsako paravambhī, ayaṁ me puggalo appiyo amanāpo; ahañceva kho panassaṁ attukkaṁsako paravambhī, ahampāssaṁ paresaṁ appiyo amanāpo’ti.

This person who praises himself and disparages others is disagreeable and unpleasant to me. If I were to praise myself and disparage others, I would be disagreeable and unpleasant to others.

Evaṁ jānantenāvuso, bhikkhunā ‘anattukkaṁsako bhavissāmi aparavambhī’ti cittaṁ uppādetabbaṁ.

Knowing this, friend, a disciple should generate the thought, I will not praise myself nor disparage others.

‘Yo khvāyaṁ puggalo kodhano kodhābhibhūto, ayaṁ me puggalo appiyo amanāpo.

This person who is angry and overcome by anger is disagreeable and unpleasant to me.

Ahañceva kho panassaṁ kodhano kodhābhibhūto, ahampāssaṁ paresaṁ appiyo amanāpo’ti.

If I were angry and overcome by anger, I would be disagreeable and unpleasant to others.

Evaṁ jānantenāvuso, bhikkhunā ‘na kodhano bhavissāmi na kodhābhibhūto’ti cittaṁ uppādetabbaṁ.

Knowing this, friend, a disciple should generate the thought, I will not be angry nor overcome by anger.

‘Yo khvāyaṁ puggalo kodhano kodhahetu upanāhī, ayaṁ me puggalo appiyo amanāpo; ahañceva kho panassaṁ kodhano kodhahetu upanāhī, ahampāssaṁ paresaṁ appiyo amanāpo’ti.

This person who is angry and holds a grudge because of anger is disagreeable and unpleasant to me. If I were angry and held a grudge because of anger, I would be disagreeable and unpleasant to others.

Evaṁ jānantenāvuso, bhikkhunā ‘na kodhano bhavissāmi na kodhahetu upanāhī’ti cittaṁ uppādetabbaṁ.

Knowing this, friend, a disciple should generate the thought, I will not be angry nor hold a grudge because of anger.

‘Yo khvāyaṁ puggalo kodhano kodhahetu abhisaṅgī, ayaṁ me puggalo appiyo amanāpo; ahañceva kho panassaṁ kodhano kodhahetu abhisaṅgī, ahampāssaṁ paresaṁ appiyo amanāpo’ti.

This person who is angry and harbors resentment because of anger is disagreeable and unpleasant to me. If I were angry and harbored resentment because of anger, I would be disagreeable and unpleasant to others.

Evaṁ jānantenāvuso, bhikkhunā ‘na kodhano bhavissāmi na kodhahetu abhisaṅgī’ti cittaṁ uppādetabbaṁ.

Knowing this, friend, a disciple should generate the thought, I will not be angry nor harbor resentment because of anger.

‘Yo khvāyaṁ puggalo kodhano kodhasāmantā vācaṁ nicchāretā, ayaṁ me puggalo appiyo amanāpo; ahañceva kho panassaṁ kodhano kodhasāmantā vācaṁ nicchāretā, ahampāssaṁ paresaṁ appiyo amanāpo’ti.

This person who is angry and speaks harshly because of anger is disagreeable and unpleasant to me. If I were angry and spoke harshly because of anger, I would be disagreeable and unpleasant to others.

Evaṁ jānantenāvuso, bhikkhunā ‘na kodhano bhavissāmi na kodhasāmantā vācaṁ nicchāressāmī’ti cittaṁ uppādetabbaṁ.

Knowing this, friend, a disciple should generate the thought, I will not be angry nor speak harshly because of anger.

‘Yo khvāyaṁ puggalo codito codakena codakaṁ paṭippharati, ayaṁ me puggalo appiyo amanāpo; ahañceva kho pana codito codakena codakaṁ paṭipphareyyaṁ, ahampāssaṁ paresaṁ appiyo amanāpo’ti.

When a person, having been admonished by another, retaliates against the admonisher, this person is unpleasant and disagreeable to me. But if I, having been admonished, were to retaliate against the admonisher, I would be unpleasant and disagreeable to others.

Evaṁ jānantenāvuso, bhikkhunā ‘codito codakena codakaṁ nappaṭippharissāmī’ti cittaṁ uppādetabbaṁ.

Knowing this, a disciple should generate the thought, When admonished, I will not retaliate against the admonisher.

‘Yo khvāyaṁ puggalo codito codakena codakaṁ apasādeti, ayaṁ me puggalo appiyo amanāpo; ahañceva kho pana codito codakena codakaṁ apasādeyyaṁ, ahampāssaṁ paresaṁ appiyo amanāpo’ti.

When a person, having been admonished by another, disparages the admonisher, this person is unpleasant and disagreeable to me. But if I, having been admonished, were to disparage the admonisher, I would be unpleasant and disagreeable to others.

Evaṁ jānantenāvuso, bhikkhunā ‘codito codakena codakaṁ na apasādessāmī’ti cittaṁ uppādetabbaṁ.

Knowing this, a disciple should generate the thought, When admonished, I will not disparage the admonisher.

‘Yo khvāyaṁ puggalo codito codakena codakassa paccāropeti, ayaṁ me puggalo appiyo amanāpo; ahañceva kho pana codito codakena codakassa paccāropeyyaṁ, ahampāssaṁ paresaṁ appiyo amanāpo’ti.

When a person, having been admonished by another, accuses the admonisher, this person is unpleasant and disagreeable to me. But if I, having been admonished, were to accuse the admonisher, I would be unpleasant and disagreeable to others.

Evaṁ jānantenāvuso, bhikkhunā ‘codito codakena codakassa na paccāropessāmī’ti cittaṁ uppādetabbaṁ.

Knowing this, a disciple should generate the thought, When admonished, I will not accuse the admonisher.

‘Yo khvāyaṁ puggalo codito codakena aññenaññaṁ paṭicarati, bahiddhā kathaṁ apanāmeti, kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukaroti, ayaṁ me puggalo appiyo amanāpo; ahañceva kho pana codito codakena aññenaññaṁ paṭicareyyaṁ, bahiddhā kathaṁ apanāmeyyaṁ, kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukareyyaṁ, ahampāssaṁ paresaṁ appiyo amanāpo’ti.

When a person, having been admonished by another, evades the issue, diverts the conversation, and displays anger, resentment, and lack of respect, this person is unpleasant and disagreeable to me. But if I, having been admonished, were to evade the issue, divert the conversation, and display anger, resentment, and lack of respect, I would be unpleasant and disagreeable to others.

Evaṁ jānantenāvuso, bhikkhunā ‘codito codakena na aññenaññaṁ paṭicarissāmi, na bahiddhā kathaṁ apanāmessāmi, na kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukarissāmī’ti cittaṁ uppādetabbaṁ.

Knowing this, a disciple should generate the thought, When admonished, I will not evade the issue, divert the conversation, or display anger, resentment, and lack of respect.

‘Yo khvāyaṁ puggalo codito codakena apadāne na sampāyati, ayaṁ me puggalo appiyo amanāpo; ahañceva kho pana codito codakena apadāne na sampāyeyyaṁ, ahampāssaṁ paresaṁ appiyo amanāpo’ti.

When a person, having been admonished by another, does not reconcile with the admonisher, this person is unpleasant and disagreeable to me. But if I, having been admonished, were not to reconcile with the admonisher, I would be unpleasant and disagreeable to others.

Evaṁ jānantenāvuso, bhikkhunā ‘codito codakena apadāne sampāyissāmī’ti cittaṁ uppādetabbaṁ.

Knowing this, a disciple should generate the thought, When admonished, I will reconcile with the admonisher.

‘Yo khvāyaṁ puggalo makkhī paḷāsī, ayaṁ me puggalo appiyo amanāpo; ahañceva kho panassaṁ makkhī paḷāsī, ahampāssaṁ paresaṁ appiyo amanāpo’ti.

When a person is deceitful and hypocritical, this person is unpleasant and disagreeable to me. But if I were deceitful and hypocritical, I would be unpleasant and disagreeable to others.

Evaṁ jānantenāvuso, bhikkhunā ‘amakkhī bhavissāmi apaḷāsī’ti cittaṁ uppādetabbaṁ.

Knowing this, a disciple should generate the thought, I will be free from deceit and hypocrisy.

‘Yo khvāyaṁ puggalo issukī maccharī, ayaṁ me puggalo appiyo amanāpo; ahañceva kho panassaṁ issukī maccharī, ahampāssaṁ paresaṁ appiyo amanāpo’ti.

When a person is envious and stingy, this person is unpleasant and disagreeable to me. But if I were envious and stingy, I would be unpleasant and disagreeable to others.

Evaṁ jānantenāvuso, bhikkhunā ‘anissukī bhavissāmi amaccharī’ti cittaṁ uppādetabbaṁ.

Therefore, friend, a disciple who knows thus should generate the thought, I will be free from envy, free from stinginess.

Evaṁ jānantenāvuso, bhikkhunā ‘asaṭho bhavissāmi amāyāvī’ti cittaṁ uppādetabbaṁ.

Therefore, friend, a disciple who knows thus should generate the thought, I will be free from deceit, free from hypocrisy.

This person is stubborn and arrogant, and he is disagreeable and unpleasant to me; if I were stubborn and arrogant, I would be disagreeable and unpleasant to others.

Evaṁ jānantenāvuso, bhikkhunā ‘atthaddho bhavissāmi anatimānī’ti cittaṁ uppādetabbaṁ.

Therefore, friend, a disciple who knows thus should generate the thought, I will be free from stubbornness, free from arrogance.

This person is attached to views, clinging, and difficult to relinquish, and he is disagreeable and unpleasant to me; if I were attached to views, clinging, and difficult to relinquish, I would be disagreeable and unpleasant to others.

Evaṁ jānantenāvuso, bhikkhunā ‘asandiṭṭhiparāmāsī bhavissāmi anādhānaggāhī suppaṭinissaggī’ti cittaṁ uppādetabbaṁ.

Therefore, friend, a disciple who knows thus should generate the thought, I will be free from attachment to views, free from clinging, easy to relinquish.

Tatrāvuso, bhikkhunā attanāva attānaṁ evaṁ paccavekkhitabbaṁ: ‘kiṁ nu khomhi pāpiccho, pāpikānaṁ icchānaṁ vasaṁ gato’ti?

There, friend, a disciple should reflect on himself thus: Am I one with unwholesome desires, under the influence of unwholesome desires?

Sace, āvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘pāpiccho khomhi, pāpikānaṁ icchānaṁ vasaṁ gato’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

If, friend, a disciple reflecting thus knows, I am one with unwholesome desires, under the influence of unwholesome desires, then, friend, that disciple should strive for the abandonment of those unskillful, unwholesome states.

If, friend, a disciple reflecting thus knows, I am one who praises himself and disparages others, then, friend, that disciple should strive for the abandonment of those unskillful, unwholesome states.

Again, friend, a disciple should reflect on himself thus: Am I one who is angry, overcome by anger?

Sace, āvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘kodhano khomhi kodhābhibhūto’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

If, friend, a disciple reflecting thus knows... If a disciple reflects and knows, I am angry, overcome by anger, then, friend, that disciple should strive to abandon those unskillful, unwholesome states.

Sace panāvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘na khomhi kodhano kodhābhibhūto’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

However, if a disciple reflects and knows, I am not angry, not overcome by anger, then, friend, that disciple should dwell with joy and delight, training day and night in wholesome states.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhunā attanāva attānaṁ evaṁ paccavekkhitabbaṁ: ‘kiṁ nu khomhi kodhano kodhahetu upanāhī’ti?

Furthermore, friend, a disciple should reflect on himself, Am I angry, harboring resentment due to anger?

Sace, āvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti ‘kodhano khomhi kodhahetu upanāhī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

If a disciple reflects and knows, I am angry, harboring resentment due to anger, then, friend, that disciple should strive to abandon those unskillful, unwholesome states.

Sace panāvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti ‘na khomhi kodhano kodhahetu upanāhī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

However, if a disciple reflects and knows, I am not angry, not harboring resentment due to anger, then, friend, that disciple should dwell with joy and delight, training day and night in wholesome states.

If a disciple reflects and knows, I am angry, clinging to anger, then, friend, that disciple should strive to abandon those unskillful, unwholesome states.

Sace, āvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘kodhano khomhi kodhasāmantā vācaṁ nicchāretā’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

If a disciple reflects and knows, I am angry, speaking words out of anger, then, friend, that disciple should strive to abandon those unskillful, unwholesome states.

Sace panāvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘na khomhi kodhano kodhasāmantā vācaṁ nicchāretā’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

However, if a disciple reflects and knows, I am not angry, not speaking words out of anger, then, friend, that disciple should dwell with joy and delight, training day and night in wholesome states.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhunā attanāva attānaṁ evaṁ paccavekkhitabbaṁ: ‘kiṁ nu khomhi codito codakena codakaṁ paṭippharāmī’ti?

Furthermore, friend, a disciple should reflect on himself, When reproached by a reproacher, do I retaliate?

Sace, āvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti ‘codito khomhi codakena codakaṁ paṭippharāmī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

If a disciple reflects and knows, I am reproached by a reproacher and I retaliate, then, friend, that disciple should strive to abandon those unskillful, unwholesome states.

Sace panāvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘codito khomhi codakena codakaṁ nappaṭippharāmī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

Therefore, friend, a disciple reflecting should know thus: I am being admonished by the admonisher, I do not retaliate against the admonisher. Therefore, friend, that disciple should dwell with joy and delight, training day and night in wholesome states.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhunā attanāva attānaṁ evaṁ paccavekkhitabbaṁ: ‘kiṁ nu khomhi codito codakena codakaṁ apasādemī’ti?

Furthermore, friend, a disciple should reflect on himself thus: Am I being admonished by the admonisher, and do I disparage the admonisher?

Sace, āvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti ‘codito khomhi codakena codakaṁ apasādemī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

If, friend, a disciple reflecting knows thus: I am being admonished by the admonisher, and I disparage the admonisher, then, friend, that disciple should strive for the abandonment of those unskillful, unwholesome states.

Sace panāvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘codito khomhi codakena codakaṁ na apasādemī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

If, however, friend, a disciple reflecting knows thus: I am being admonished by the admonisher, and I do not disparage the admonisher, then, friend, that disciple should dwell with joy and delight, training day and night in wholesome states.

Furthermore, friend, a disciple should reflect on himself thus: Am I being admonished by the admonisher, and do I accuse the admonisher?

Sace, āvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘codito khomhi codakena codakassa paccāropemī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

If, friend, a disciple reflecting knows thus: I am being admonished by the admonisher, and I accuse the admonisher, then, friend, that disciple should strive for the abandonment of those unskillful, unwholesome states.

Sace panāvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘codito khomhi codakena codakassa na paccāropemī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

If, however, friend, a disciple reflecting knows thus: I am being admonished by the admonisher, and I do not accuse the admonisher, then, friend, that disciple should dwell with joy and delight, training day and night in wholesome states.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhunā attanāva attānaṁ evaṁ paccavekkhitabbaṁ: ‘kiṁ nu khomhi codito codakena aññenaññaṁ paṭicarāmi, bahiddhā kathaṁ apanāmemi, kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukaromī’ti?

Furthermore, friend, a disciple should reflect on himself thus: Am I being admonished by the admonisher, and do I evade by speaking of other things, diverting the conversation, and manifesting anger, hatred, and resentment?

Sace, āvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘codito khomhi codakena aññenaññaṁ paṭicarāmi, bahiddhā kathaṁ apanāmemi, kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukaromī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

If, friend, a disciple reflecting knows thus: I am being admonished by the admonisher, and I evade by speaking of other things, diverting the conversation, and manifesting anger, hatred, and resentment, then, friend, that disciple should strive for the abandonment of those unskillful, unwholesome states.

Sace panāvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘codito khomhi codakena na aññenaññaṁ paṭicarāmi, na bahiddhā kathaṁ apanāmemi, na kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukaromī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

If, however, friend, a disciple reflecting knows thus: I am being admonished by the admonisher, and I do not evade by speaking of other things, do not divert the conversation, and do not manifest anger, hatred, and resentment, then, friend, that disciple should dwell with joy and delight, training day and night in wholesome states.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhunā attanāva attānaṁ evaṁ paccavekkhitabbaṁ: ‘kiṁ nu khomhi codito codakena apadāne na sampāyāmī’ti?

Furthermore, friend, a disciple should reflect on himself thus: Am I being urged by the admonisher and not fulfilling the task?

Sace, āvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘codito khomhi codakena apadāne na sampāyāmī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

If, friend, a disciple, upon reflection, knows thus, I am being urged by the admonisher and not fulfilling the task, then, friend, that disciple should strive for the abandonment of those unskillful, unwholesome states.

Sace panāvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘codito khomhi codakena apadāne sampāyāmī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

If, however, friend, a disciple, upon reflection, knows thus, I am being urged by the admonisher and fulfilling the task, then, friend, that disciple should dwell with joy and delight, training day and night in wholesome states.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhunā attanāva attānaṁ evaṁ paccavekkhitabbaṁ: ‘kiṁ nu khomhi makkhī paḷāsī’ti?

Furthermore, friend, a disciple should reflect upon himself thus, Am I deceitful and hypocritical?

Sace, āvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘makkhī khomhi paḷāsī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

If, friend, a disciple, upon reflection, knows thus, I am deceitful and hypocritical, then, friend, that disciple should strive for the abandonment of those unskillful, unwholesome states.

Sace panāvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘amakkhī khomhi apaḷāsī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

If, however, friend, a disciple, upon reflection, knows thus, I am not deceitful and not hypocritical, then, friend, that disciple should dwell with joy and delight, training day and night in wholesome states.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhunā attanāva attānaṁ evaṁ paccavekkhitabbaṁ: ‘kiṁ nu khomhi issukī maccharī’ti?

Furthermore, friend, a disciple should reflect upon himself thus, Am I envious and stingy?

Sace, āvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘issukī khomhi maccharī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

If, friend, a disciple, upon reflection, knows thus, I am envious and stingy, then, friend, that disciple should strive for the abandonment of those unskillful, unwholesome states.

If, friend, a disciple, upon reflection, knows thus, I am deceitful and a trickster, then, friend, that disciple should strive for the abandonment of those unskillful, unwholesome states.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhunā attanāva attānaṁ evaṁ paccavekkhitabbaṁ: ‘kiṁ nu khomhi sandiṭṭhiparāmāsī ādhānaggāhī duppaṭinissaggī’ti?

Furthermore, friends, a disciple should reflect on himself thus: Am I one who clings to views, who holds on stubbornly, who is difficult to relinquish?

Sace, āvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘sandiṭṭhiparāmāsī khomhi ādhānaggāhī duppaṭinissaggī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā tesaṁyeva pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

If, friends, a disciple reflecting knows thus: I am one who clings to views, who holds on stubbornly, who is difficult to relinquish, then, friends, the disciple should strive to abandon those unskillful, unwholesome states.

Sace panāvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno evaṁ jānāti: ‘asandiṭṭhiparāmāsī khomhi anādhānaggāhī suppaṭinissaggī’ti, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

If, friends, a disciple reflecting knows thus: I am not one who clings to views, who does not hold on stubbornly, who is easy to relinquish, then, friends, the disciple should dwell with joy and delight, training day and night in wholesome states.

Sace, āvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno sabbepime pāpake akusale dhamme appahīne attani samanupassati, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā sabbesaṁyeva imesaṁ pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

If, friends, a disciple reflecting sees all these unskillful, unwholesome states not abandoned in himself, then, friends, the disciple should strive to abandon all these unskillful, unwholesome states.

Sace panāvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno sabbepime pāpake akusale dhamme pahīne attani samanupassati, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ, ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesu.

If, friends, a disciple reflecting sees all these unskillful, unwholesome states abandoned in himself, then, friends, the disciple should dwell with joy and delight, training day and night in wholesome states.

Seyyathāpi, āvuso, itthī vā puriso vā, daharo yuvā maṇḍanajātiko, ādāse vā parisuddhe pariyodāte, acche vā udakapatte, sakaṁ mukhanimittaṁ paccavekkhamāno, sace tattha passati rajaṁ vā aṅgaṇaṁ vā, tasseva rajassa vā aṅgaṇassa vā pahānāya vāyamati; no ce tattha passati rajaṁ vā aṅgaṇaṁ vā, teneva attamano hoti: ‘lābhā vata me, parisuddhaṁ vata me’ti.

Just as, friends, a young man or woman, fond of adornment, looking at their own reflection in a clear, bright mirror or in a bowl of clear water, if they see a blemish or a stain there, they strive to remove it; if they do not see a blemish or a stain there, they are pleased, thinking, It is a gain for me, it is clean for me.

Evameva kho, āvuso, sace bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno sabbepime pāpake akusale dhamme appahīne attani samanupassati, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā sabbesaṁyeva imesaṁ pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

In the same way, friends, if a disciple reflecting sees all these unskillful, unwholesome states not abandoned in himself, then, friends, the disciple should strive to abandon all these unskillful, unwholesome states.

Sace panāvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamāno sabbepime pāpake akusale dhamme pahīne attani samanupassati, tenāvuso, bhikkhunā teneva pītipāmojjena vihātabbaṁ, ahorattānusikkhinā kusalesu dhammesū”ti.

If, friends, a disciple reflecting sees all these unskillful, unwholesome states abandoned in himself, then, friends, the disciple should dwell with joy and delight, training day and night in wholesome states.

Idamavocāyasmā mahāmoggallāno.

Thus spoke the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna.

Attamanā te bhikkhū āyasmato mahāmoggallānassa bhāsitaṁ abhinandunti.

The disciples were delighted and rejoiced in the words of the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna.

Anumānasuttaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ pañcamaṁ.
