The Discourse on Conditions

Dasabalavagga Paccayasutta Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

At Sāvatthī, the Blessed One was residing.

“Avijjāpaccayā, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā; saṅkhārapaccayā viññāṇaṁ …pe…

Disciples, with ignorance as condition, volitional formations arise; with volitional formations as condition, consciousness arises; ......

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti.

thus is the arising of this entire mass of suffering.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, jarāmaraṇaṁ?

And what is aging and death?

Yā tesaṁ tesaṁ sattānaṁ tamhi tamhi sattanikāye jarā jīraṇatā khaṇḍiccaṁ pāliccaṁ valittacatā āyuno saṁhāni indriyānaṁ paripāko— ayaṁ vuccati jarā.

The aging of beings in various groups, their decrepitude, brokenness, graying, wrinkling, decline of life, and deterioration of faculties: this is called aging.

Yā tesaṁ tesaṁ sattānaṁ tamhā tamhā sattanikāyā cuti cavanatā bhedo antaradhānaṁ maccu maraṇaṁ kālakiriyā khandhānaṁ bhedo kaḷevarassa nikkhepo; idaṁ vuccati maraṇaṁ.

The passing away of beings from various groups, their departure, breaking up, disappearance, death, dying, completion of time, breaking up of the aggregates, laying down of the body: this is called death.

Iti ayañca jarā idañca maraṇaṁ.

Thus, this aging and this death are called aging and death.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, jarāmaraṇaṁ. Jātisamudayā jarāmaraṇasamudayo; jātinirodhā jarāmaraṇanirodho.

With the arising of birth, there is the arising of aging and death; with the cessation of birth, there is the cessation of aging and death.

Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo jarāmaraṇanirodhagāminī paṭipadā.

This very Noble Eightfold Path is the way leading to the cessation of aging and death.

Seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi, sammāsaṅkappo, sammāvācā, sammākammanto, sammāājīvo, sammāvāyāmo, sammāsati, sammāsamādhi.

Namely: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, jāti …pe…

And what is birth? ...

katamo ca, bhikkhave, bhavo …

And what is existence? ...

katamañca, bhikkhave, upādānaṁ …

And what is clinging? ...

katamā ca, bhikkhave, taṇhā …

And what is craving? ...

katamā ca, bhikkhave, vedanā …

And what is feeling? ...

katamo ca, bhikkhave, phasso …

And what is contact? ...

katamañca, bhikkhave, saḷāyatanaṁ …

And what are the six sense bases? ...

katamañca, bhikkhave, nāmarūpaṁ …

And what is name-and-form? ...

katamañca, bhikkhave, viññāṇaṁ …?

And what is consciousness?

Katame ca, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā?

And what are volitional formations?

Tayome, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā— kāyasaṅkhāro, vacīsaṅkhāro, cittasaṅkhāro.

There are these three volitional formations: bodily volitional formation, verbal volitional formation, and mental volitional formation.

Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā.

These are called volitional formations.

Avijjāsamudayā saṅkhārasamudayo; avijjānirodhā saṅkhāranirodho. Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo saṅkhāranirodhagāminī paṭipadā. Seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi.

With the arising of ignorance, there is the arising of volitional formations; with the cessation of ignorance, there is the cessation of volitional formations.

This very Noble Eightfold Path is the way leading to the cessation of volitional formations.

Yato kho, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako evaṁ paccayaṁ pajānāti, evaṁ paccayasamudayaṁ pajānāti, evaṁ paccayanirodhaṁ pajānāti, evaṁ paccayanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ pajānāti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako diṭṭhisampanno itipi, dassanasampanno itipi, āgato imaṁ saddhammaṁ itipi, passati imaṁ saddhammaṁ itipi, sekkhena ñāṇena samannāgato itipi, sekkhāya vijjāya samannāgato itipi, dhammasotaṁ samāpanno itipi, ariyo nibbedhikapañño itipi, amatadvāraṁ āhacca tiṭṭhati itipī”ti. Sattamaṁ.

Namely: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.
