Saṁyutta Nikāya 12.2 1.

Vibhaṅgasutta

Dwelling at Sāvatthī.

Buddhavagga Vibhaṅgasutta Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

I will teach you the dependent origination, I will analyze it.

“Paṭiccasamuppādaṁ vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi vibhajissāmi.

Listen to it attentively, pay close attention, I will speak.

Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.

Yes, lord, those disciples replied to the Blessed One.

“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. Bhagavā etadavoca: “Katamo ca, bhikkhave, paṭiccasamuppādo? Avijjāpaccayā, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā; saṅkhārapaccayā viññāṇaṁ; viññāṇapaccayā nāmarūpaṁ; nāmarūpapaccayā saḷāyatanaṁ; saḷāyatanapaccayā phasso; phassapaccayā vedanā; vedanāpaccayā taṇhā; taṇhāpaccayā upādānaṁ; upādānapaccayā bhavo; bhavapaccayā jāti; jātipaccayā jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā sambhavanti.

The Blessed One said: And what is dependent origination? With ignorance as condition formations; with formations as condition, consciousness; with consciousness as condition, name-and-form; with name-and-form as condition, the six sense bases; with the six sense bases as condition, contact; with contact as condition, feeling; with feeling as condition, craving; with craving as condition, clinging; with clinging as condition, becoming; with becoming as condition, birth; with birth as condition, aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair come to be.

Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti.

This is the origin of this whole mass of suffering.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, jarāmaraṇaṁ?

And what is aging and death?

Yā tesaṁ tesaṁ sattānaṁ tamhi tamhi sattanikāye jarā jīraṇatā khaṇḍiccaṁ pāliccaṁ valittacatā āyuno saṁhāni indriyānaṁ paripāko; ayaṁ vuccati jarā.

The aging of various beings in various orders of beings, their old age, brokenness, greyness, wrinkleness, decline of life, weakening of the faculties; this is called aging.

Yā tesaṁ tesaṁ sattānaṁ tamhā tamhā sattanikāyā cuti cavanatā bhedo antaradhānaṁ maccu maraṇaṁ kālakiriyā khandhānaṁ bhedo kaḷevarassa nikkhepo (…), idaṁ vuccati maraṇaṁ.

The passing of various beings from various orders of beings, their dying, breaking up, disappearance, death, completion of time, dissolution of the aggregates, laying down of the body, this is called death.

Iti ayañca jarā, idañca maraṇaṁ.

So this is aging and this is death.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, jarāmaraṇaṁ.

This is called aging and death.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, jāti?

And what is birth?

Yā tesaṁ tesaṁ sattānaṁ tamhi tamhi sattanikāye jāti sañjāti okkanti abhinibbatti khandhānaṁ pātubhāvo āyatanānaṁ paṭilābho.

The birth of various beings into various orders of beings, their being born, descent, coming-to-be, coming forth, appearance of aggregates, acquisition of sense bases.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, jāti.

This is called birth.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, bhavo?

And what is becoming?

Tayome, bhikkhave, bhavā— kāmabhavo, rūpabhavo, arūpabhavo.

There are these three kinds of becoming, disciples: sensual becoming, form becoming, formless becoming.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhavo.

This is called becoming.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, upādānaṁ?

And what is clinging?

Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, upādānāni— kāmupādānaṁ, diṭṭhupādānaṁ, sīlabbatupādānaṁ, attavādupādānaṁ.

These four kinds of clinging, disciples: clinging to sensual pleasures, clinging to views, clinging to rituals and observances, clinging to a doctrine of self.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, upādānaṁ.

This is called clinging.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, taṇhā?

And what is craving?

Chayime, bhikkhave, taṇhākāyā— rūpataṇhā, saddataṇhā, gandhataṇhā, rasataṇhā, phoṭṭhabbataṇhā, dhammataṇhā.

These six classes of craving, disciples: craving for forms, craving for sounds, craving for odors, craving for tastes, craving for tactile sensations, craving for mental phenomena.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, taṇhā.

This is called craving.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, vedanā?

And what is feeling?

Chayime, bhikkhave, vedanākāyā— cakkhusamphassajā vedanā, sotasamphassajā vedanā, ghānasamphassajā vedanā, jivhāsamphassajā vedanā, kāyasamphassajā vedanā, manosamphassajā vedanā.

These six classes of feeling, disciples: feeling born of eye-contact, feeling born of ear-contact, feeling born of nose-contact, feeling born of tongue-contact, feeling born of body-contact, feeling born of mind-contact.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, vedanā.

This is called feeling.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, phasso?

And what is contact?

Chayime, bhikkhave, phassakāyā— cakkhusamphasso, sotasamphasso, ghānasamphasso, jivhāsamphasso, kāyasamphasso, manosamphasso.

These six classes of contact, disciples: eye-contact, ear-contact, nose-contact, tongue-contact, body-contact, mind-contact.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, phasso.

This is called contact.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, saḷāyatanaṁ?

And what is the six sense bases?

Cakkhāyatanaṁ, sotāyatanaṁ, ghānāyatanaṁ, jivhāyatanaṁ, kāyāyatanaṁ, manāyatanaṁ— idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, saḷāyatanaṁ.

The eye base, ear base, nose base, tongue base, body base, mind base: this is called the six sense bases.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, nāmarūpaṁ?

And what is name-and-form?

Vedanā, saññā, cetanā, phasso, manasikāro— idaṁ vuccati nāmaṁ.

Feeling, perception, intention, contact, attention: this is called name.

Cattāro ca mahābhūtā, catunnañca mahābhūtānaṁ upādāyarūpaṁ.

The four great elements and the form derived from the four great elements.

Idaṁ vuccati rūpaṁ.

This is called form.

Iti idañca nāmaṁ, idañca rūpaṁ.

Thus this is name and this is form.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, nāmarūpaṁ.

This is called name-and-form.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, viññāṇaṁ?

And what is consciousness?

Chayime, bhikkhave, viññāṇakāyā— cakkhuviññāṇaṁ, sotaviññāṇaṁ, ghānaviññāṇaṁ, jivhāviññāṇaṁ, kāyaviññāṇaṁ, manoviññāṇaṁ.

These six classes of consciousness, disciples: eye-consciousness, ear-consciousness, nose-consciousness, tongue-consciousness, body-consciousness, mind-consciousness.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, viññāṇaṁ.

This is called consciousness.

Katame ca, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā?

And what are formations?

Tayome, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā— kāyasaṅkhāro, vacīsaṅkhāro, cittasaṅkhāro.

These three kinds of formations, disciples: bodily formation, verbal formation, mental formation.

Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā.

These are called formations.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, avijjā?

And what is ignorance?

Yaṁ kho, bhikkhave, dukkhe aññāṇaṁ, dukkhasamudaye aññāṇaṁ, dukkhanirodhe aññāṇaṁ, dukkhanirodhagāminiyā paṭipadāya aññāṇaṁ.

That which is ignorance of suffering, ignorance of the origin of suffering, ignorance of the cessation of suffering, ignorance of the path leading to the cessation of suffering.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, avijjā.

This is called ignorance.

Iti kho, bhikkhave, avijjāpaccayā saṅkhārā; saṅkhārapaccayā viññāṇaṁ …pe…

Thus with ignorance as condition, formations; with formations as condition, consciousness …

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti.

so on … this is the origin of this whole mass of suffering.

Avijjāya tveva asesavirāganirodhā saṅkhāranirodho; saṅkhāranirodhā viññāṇanirodho …pe…

With the complete fading away and cessation of ignorance comes cessation of formations; with the cessation of formations, cessation of consciousness …

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hotī”ti. Dutiyaṁ.

so on … this is the cessation of this whole mass of suffering.
