Saṁyutta Nikāya 12.44 5.

Discourse on the World

Gahapativagga Lokasutta Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

He was dwelling at Sāvatthī.

“Lokassa, bhikkhave, samudayañca atthaṅgamañca desessāmi.

Disciples, I will teach you the arising and cessation of the world.

Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.

Listen to it, pay close attention, I will speak.

“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.

Yes, venerable sir, those disciples replied to the Blessed One.

Bhagavā etadavoca: “Katamo ca, bhikkhave, lokassa samudayo?

The Blessed One said this: And what is the arising of the world?

Cakkhuñca paṭicca rūpe ca uppajjati cakkhuviññāṇaṁ.

Dependent on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness arises.

Tiṇṇaṁ saṅgati phasso.

The meeting of the three is contact.

Phassapaccayā vedanā; vedanāpaccayā taṇhā; taṇhāpaccayā upādānaṁ; upādānapaccayā bhavo; bhavapaccayā jāti; jātipaccayā jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā sambhavanti.

With contact as condition, feeling is conditioned. With feeling as condition, craving grows. With craving as condition, clinging renews dependency. With clinging as condition, becoming continues.

Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhave, lokassa samudayo.

With becoming as condition, rebirth occurs.

Sotañca paṭicca sadde ca …pe… ghānañca paṭicca gandhe ca …

With rebirth as condition, aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair continue.

jivhañca paṭicca rase ca …

This is the arising of the world.

kāyañca paṭicca phoṭṭhabbe ca …

Dependent on the ear and sounds...

manañca paṭicca dhamme ca uppajjati manoviññāṇaṁ.

Dependent on the nose and odors...

Tiṇṇaṁ saṅgati phasso.

Dependent on the tongue and tastes...

Phassapaccayā vedanā …pe…

Dependent on the body and tactile objects...

jātipaccayā jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā sambhavanti.

Dependent on the mind and mental phenomena, mind-consciousness arises. The meeting of the three is contact.

With contact as condition, feeling arises; with feeling as condition, craving arises; with craving as condition, clinging arises; with clinging as condition, becoming arises; with becoming as condition, birth arises; with birth as condition, aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair arise.

Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhave, lokassa samudayo.

This is the arising of the world.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, lokassa atthaṅgamo?

And what is the cessation of the world?

Cakkhuñca paṭicca rūpe ca uppajjati cakkhuviññāṇaṁ.

Dependent on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness arises.

Tiṇṇaṁ saṅgati phasso.

The meeting of the three is contact.

Phassapaccayā vedanā; vedanāpaccayā taṇhā.

With contact as condition, feeling arises; with feeling as condition, craving arises.

Tassāyeva taṇhāya asesavirāganirodhā upādānanirodho; upādānanirodhā bhavanirodho …pe…

With the remainderless fading away and cessation of that very craving, clinging ceases; with the cessation of clinging, becoming ceases...

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti.

thus is the cessation of this whole mass of suffering.

Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhave, lokassa atthaṅgamo.

This is the cessation of the world.

Sotañca paṭicca sadde ca …pe…

Dependent on the ear and sounds...

ghānañca paṭicca gandhe ca …

Dependent on the nose and odors...

jivhañca paṭicca rase ca …

Dependent on the tongue and tastes...

kāyañca paṭicca phoṭṭhabbe ca …

Dependent on the body and tactile objects...

manañca paṭicca dhamme ca uppajjati manoviññāṇaṁ.

Dependent on the mind and mental phenomena, mind-consciousness arises.

Tiṇṇaṁ saṅgati phasso.

The meeting of the three is contact.

Phassapaccayā vedanā; vedanāpaccayā taṇhā.

With contact as condition, feeling arises; with feeling as condition, craving arises.

Tassāyeva taṇhāya asesavirāganirodhā upādānanirodho; upādānanirodhā bhavanirodho …pe…

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti.
