Atthirāgasutta

Mahāvagga Atthirāgasutta Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

The discourse Atthirāga is found in Sāvatthi.

“Cattārome, bhikkhave, āhārā bhūtānaṁ vā sattānaṁ ṭhitiyā sambhavesīnaṁ vā anuggahāya.

Disciples, there are these four kinds of nutriment for the maintenance of beings that have come to be, for the support of those seeking existence.

Katame cattāro?

What are the four?

Kabaḷīkāro āhāro oḷāriko vā sukhumo vā, phasso dutiyo, manosañcetanā tatiyā, viññāṇaṁ catutthaṁ.

They are physical food, whether coarse or fine; contact; mental volition; and consciousness.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro āhārā bhūtānaṁ vā sattānaṁ ṭhitiyā sambhavesīnaṁ vā anuggahāya.

These are the four nutriments for the maintenance of beings that have come to be, for the support of those seeking existence.

Kabaḷīkāre ce, bhikkhave, āhāre atthi rāgo atthi nandī atthi taṇhā, patiṭṭhitaṁ tattha viññāṇaṁ virūḷhaṁ.

If there is desire, delight, and craving in physical food, consciousness becomes established there and comes to growth.

Yattha patiṭṭhitaṁ viññāṇaṁ virūḷhaṁ, atthi tattha nāmarūpassa avakkanti.

Where consciousness is established and has come to growth, there is the descent of name-and-form.

Yattha atthi nāmarūpassa avakkanti, atthi tattha saṅkhārānaṁ vuddhi.

Where there is the descent of name-and-form, there is the growth of formations.

Yattha atthi saṅkhārānaṁ vuddhi, atthi tattha āyatiṁ punabbhavābhinibbatti.

Where formations grow, there is the production of renewed existence in the future.

Yattha atthi āyatiṁ punabbhavābhinibbatti, atthi tattha āyatiṁ jātijarāmaraṇaṁ.

Where there is the production of renewed existence in the future, there is future birth, aging, and death.

Yattha atthi āyatiṁ jātijarāmaraṇaṁ, sasokaṁ taṁ, bhikkhave, sadaraṁ saupāyāsanti vadāmi.

Where there is future birth, aging, and death, I say, suffering arises accompanied by sorrow, lamentation, and despair.

Phasse ce, bhikkhave, āhāre …pe… manosañcetanāya ce, bhikkhave, āhāre …

The same applies to the nutriment of contact, mental volition, and consciousness.

viññāṇe ce, bhikkhave, āhāre atthi rāgo atthi nandī atthi taṇhā, patiṭṭhitaṁ tattha viññāṇaṁ virūḷhaṁ.

If there is desire, delight, and craving in the nutriment of contact, mental volition, or consciousness, then consciousness becomes established there and grows.

Yattha patiṭṭhitaṁ viññāṇaṁ virūḷhaṁ, atthi tattha nāmarūpassa avakkanti.

Where consciousness is established and grows, there is the descent of name-and-form.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, rajako vā cittakārako vā sati rajanāya vā lākhāya vā haliddiyā vā nīliyā vā mañjiṭṭhāya vā suparimaṭṭhe vā phalake bhittiyā vā dussapaṭṭe vā itthirūpaṁ vā purisarūpaṁ vā abhinimmineyya sabbaṅgapaccaṅgaṁ; evameva kho, bhikkhave, kabaḷīkāre ce āhāre atthi rāgo atthi nandī atthi taṇhā, patiṭṭhitaṁ tattha viññāṇaṁ virūḷhaṁ.

Just as a dyer or painter, with dyes of red, yellow, blue, or carmine, could produce the image of a man or woman complete in all its features on a well-polished plank or wall or piece of cloth, in the same way, if there is desire, delight, and craving in the nutriment, consciousness becomes established and grows.

Yattha patiṭṭhitaṁ viññāṇaṁ virūḷhaṁ, atthi tattha nāmarūpassa avakkanti.

Where consciousness is established and grows, there is the descent of name-and-form.

Where there is the future arising of rebirth, there is the future arising of birth, aging, and death.

Yattha atthi āyatiṁ jātijarāmaraṇaṁ, sasokaṁ taṁ, bhikkhave, sadaraṁ saupāyāsanti vadāmi.

Where there is the future arising of birth, aging, and death, it is declared to be accompanied by sorrow, by lamentation, by suffering.

Phasse ce, bhikkhave, āhāre …pe…

If there is attachment to sensory contact for sustenance...

manosañcetanāya ce, bhikkhave, āhāre …

If there is attachment to intention for sustenance...

viññāṇe ce, bhikkhave, āhāre atthi rāgo atthi nandī atthi taṇhā, patiṭṭhitaṁ tattha viññāṇaṁ virūḷhaṁ.

If consciousness feeds on desires, delight, and craving, the consciousness stands established and grows.

Yattha patiṭṭhitaṁ viññāṇaṁ virūḷhaṁ, atthi tattha nāmarūpassa avakkanti.

Where consciousness is established and grows, there is the descent of name-and-form.

Where there is the growth of formations, there is the future arising of rebirth.

Yattha atthi āyatiṁ punabbhavābhinibbatti, atthi tattha āyatiṁ jātijarāmaraṇaṁ.

Kabaḷīkāre ce, bhikkhave, āhāre natthi rāgo natthi nandī natthi taṇhā, appatiṭṭhitaṁ tattha viññāṇaṁ avirūḷhaṁ.

If there is no attachment, no delight, and no craving in solid food, the consciousness is not established and does not grow.

Yattha appatiṭṭhitaṁ viññāṇaṁ avirūḷhaṁ, natthi tattha nāmarūpassa avakkanti.

Where consciousness is not established and does not grow, there is no descent of name-and-form.

Yattha natthi nāmarūpassa avakkanti, natthi tattha saṅkhārānaṁ vuddhi.

Where there is no descent of name-and-form, there is no growth of formations.

Yattha natthi saṅkhārānaṁ vuddhi, natthi tattha āyatiṁ punabbhavābhinibbatti.

Where there is no growth of formations, there is no future arising of rebirth.

Yattha natthi āyatiṁ punabbhavābhinibbatti, natthi tattha āyatiṁ jātijarāmaraṇaṁ.

Where there is no future arising of rebirth, there is no future arising of birth, aging, and death.

Yattha natthi āyatiṁ jātijarāmaraṇaṁ, asokaṁ taṁ, bhikkhave, adaraṁ anupāyāsanti vadāmi.

Where there is no future arising of birth, aging, and death, it is declared to be free from sorrow, from lamentation, from suffering.

Phasse ce, bhikkhave, āhāre …pe…

If there is no attachment to sensory contact for sustenance...

manosañcetanāya ce, bhikkhave, āhāre …

If there is no attachment to intention for sustenance...

viññāṇe ce, bhikkhave, āhāre natthi rāgo natthi nandī natthi taṇhā, appatiṭṭhitaṁ tattha viññāṇaṁ avirūḷhaṁ.

If consciousness feeds on no desires, no delight, and no craving, the consciousness is not established and does not grow.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, kūṭāgāraṁ vā kūṭāgārasālaṁ vā uttarāya vā dakkhiṇāya vā pācīnāya vā vātapānā sūriye uggacchante vātapānena rasmi pavisitvā kvāssa patiṭṭhitā”ti?

Just as if the sun were to rise and its rays were to enter through the window of a spire or a pavilion from the north, south, east, or west:where would they find establishment?

“Pacchimāyaṁ, bhante, bhittiyan”ti.

In the western wall, venerable sir, he replied.

“Pacchimā ce, bhikkhave, bhitti nāssa kvāssa patiṭṭhitā”ti?

If there were no wall, where would it stand? the teacher asked.

“Pathaviyaṁ, bhante”ti.

On the earth, venerable sir, he answered.

“Pathavī ce, bhikkhave, nāssa kvāssa patiṭṭhitā”ti?

If there were no earth, where would it stand?

“Āpasmiṁ, bhante”ti.

In water, venerable sir, he replied.

“Āpo ce, bhikkhave, nāssa kvāssa patiṭṭhitā”ti?

If there were no water, where would it stand?

“Appatiṭṭhitā, bhante”ti.

It would be ungrounded, venerable sir, he acknowledged.

“Evameva kho, bhikkhave, kabaḷīkāre ce āhāre natthi rāgo natthi nandī natthi taṇhā …pe….

In the same way if there is no desire, no delight, no craving in material food...

Phasse ce, bhikkhave, āhāre …

If there is no desire in contact as food...

manosañcetanāya ce, bhikkhave, āhāre …

If there is no desire in mental volition as food...

viññāṇe ce, bhikkhave, āhāre natthi rāgo natthi nandī natthi taṇhā, appatiṭṭhitaṁ tattha viññāṇaṁ avirūḷhaṁ.

If there is no desire in consciousness as food, then consciousness is ungrounded, non-establishable.

Yattha appatiṭṭhitaṁ viññāṇaṁ avirūḷhaṁ, natthi tattha nāmarūpassa avakkanti.

Where consciousness is ungrounded, non-establishable, there is no descent of name-and-form.

Where there is no growth of formations, there is no future birth and becoming.

Yattha natthi āyatiṁ punabbhavābhinibbatti, natthi tattha āyatiṁ jātijarāmaraṇaṁ.

Where there is no future birth and becoming, there is no future birth, aging, and death.

Yattha natthi āyatiṁ jātijarāmaraṇaṁ asokaṁ taṁ, bhikkhave, adaraṁ anupāyāsanti vadāmī”ti. Catutthaṁ.

Where there is no future birth, aging, and death, that is said to be sorrowless, sorrow-free, and painless I declare.
