The Discourse on Conceiving

Arahantavagga Maññamānasutta Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Originating in Sāvatthī.

Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “sādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saṅkhittena dhammaṁ desetu …pe…

Then a certain disciple, after approaching and sitting to one side, addressed the Blessed One:

Venerable sir, may the Blessed One teach me the Dhamma in brief...

ātāpī pahitatto vihareyyan”ti.

so that I may dwell ardent and resolute.

“Maññamāno kho, bhikkhu, baddho mārassa; amaññamāno mutto pāpimato”ti.

Conceiving, disciple, one is bound by Māra; not conceiving, one is freed from the Evil One.

“Aññātaṁ, bhagavā, aññātaṁ, sugatā”ti.

It is known, Blessed One, it is known, Fortunate One.

“Yathā kathaṁ pana tvaṁ, bhikkhu, mayā saṅkhittena bhāsitassa vitthārena atthaṁ ājānāsī”ti?

But how, disciple, do you know the meaning of what was spoken by me in brief?

“Rūpaṁ kho, bhante, maññamāno baddho mārassa; amaññamāno mutto pāpimato.

Form, venerable sir, when conceived, binds one to Māra; not conceiving it, one is freed from the Evil One.

viññāṇaṁ maññamāno baddho mārassa; amaññamāno mutto pāpimato.

Imassa khvāhaṁ, bhante, bhagavatā saṅkhittena bhāsitassa evaṁ vitthārena atthaṁ ājānāmī”ti.

This is how, venerable sir, I know the meaning of what was spoken by the Blessed One in brief.

“Sādhu sādhu, bhikkhu.

Good, good, disciple.

Sādhu kho tvaṁ, bhikkhu, mayā saṅkhittena bhāsitassa vitthārena atthaṁ ājānāsi.

It is good that you know the meaning of what was spoken by me in brief.

Rūpaṁ kho, bhikkhu, maññamāno baddho mārassa; amaññamāno mutto pāpimato.

Form, disciple, when conceived, binds one to Māra; not conceiving it, one is freed from the Evil One.

This is how the meaning of what was spoken by me in brief should be known.

aññataro ca pana so bhikkhu arahataṁ ahosīti. Dutiyaṁ.

And that disciple became one of the arahants.
