Saṁyutta Nikāya 35.31 3.

Eradication of all Conceit

Sabbavagga Paṭhamasamugghātasappāyasutta “Sabbamaññitasamugghātasappāyaṁ vo, bhikkhave, paṭipadaṁ desessāmi.

Disciples, I shall teach you the path that is conducive to the uprooting of all conceit.

Taṁ suṇātha.

Listen to this.

Katamā ca sā, bhikkhave, sabbamaññitasamugghātasappāyā paṭipadā?

And what is the path conducive to the uprooting of all conceit?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhuṁ na maññati, cakkhusmiṁ na maññati, cakkhuto na maññati, cakkhuṁ meti na maññati.

Here a disciple does not conceive in terms of the eye, does not conceive in regard to the eye, does not conceive from the eye, does not conceive the eye is mine.

Rūpe na maññati …pe…

He does not conceive in terms of forms …

cakkhuviññāṇaṁ na maññati, cakkhusamphassaṁ na maññati, yampidaṁ cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi na maññati, tasmimpi na maññati, tatopi na maññati, taṁ meti na maññati.

etc. …

He does not conceive in terms of eye-consciousness, does not conceive in terms of eye-contact, does not conceive in terms of the feeling arisen due to eye-contact, be it pleasant, painful, or neither-painful-nor-pleasant; he does not conceive it as ‘mine, in that, or from that.

Yañhi, bhikkhave, maññati, yasmiṁ maññati, yato maññati, yaṁ meti maññati, tato taṁ hoti aññathā.

Disciples, in regard to whatever one conceives, in whatever one conceives, from wherever one conceives, regarding whatever as ‘mine one conceives, it becomes otherwise.

Aññathābhāvī bhavasatto loko bhavamevābhinandati …pe…

The world, in which beings are attached to existence, delights in becoming …

jivhaṁ na maññati, jivhāya na maññati, jivhāto na maññati, jivhā meti na maññati. Rase na maññati …pe… jivhāviññāṇaṁ na maññati, jivhāsamphassaṁ na maññati.

etc. …

He does not conceive in terms of the tongue, does not conceive in regard to the tongue, does not conceive from the tongue, does not conceive the tongue is mine.

He does not conceive in terms of tastes … etc. …

Yampidaṁ jivhāsamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi na maññati, tasmimpi na maññati, tatopi na maññati, taṁ meti na maññati.

He does not conceive in terms of tongue-consciousness, does not conceive in terms of tongue-contact.

The feeling arisen due to tongue-contact, be it pleasant, painful, or neither-painful-nor-pleasant:he does not conceive it as ‘mine, in that, or from that.

Yañhi, bhikkhave, maññati, yasmiṁ maññati, yato maññati, yaṁ meti maññati, tato taṁ hoti aññathā.

Disciples, in regard to whatever one conceives, in whatever one conceives, from wherever one conceives, regarding whatever as ‘mine one conceives, it becomes otherwise.

Aññathābhāvī bhavasatto loko bhavamevābhinandati …pe…

The world, in which beings are attached to existence, delights in becoming …

manaṁ na maññati, manasmiṁ na maññati, manato na maññati, mano meti na maññati. Dhamme na maññati …pe…

etc. …

He does not conceive in terms of the mind, does not conceive in regard to the mind, does not conceive from the mind, does not conceive the mind is mine.

manoviññāṇaṁ na maññati, manosamphassaṁ na maññati.

He does not conceive in terms of mental phenomena …

Yampidaṁ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi na maññati, tasmimpi na maññati, tatopi na maññati, taṁ meti na maññati.

etc. …

He does not conceive in terms of mind-consciousness, does not conceive in terms of mind-contact.

The feeling arisen due to mind-contact, be it pleasant, painful, or neither-painful-nor-pleasant:he does not conceive it as ‘mine, in that, or from that.

Yañhi, bhikkhave, maññati, yasmiṁ maññati, yato maññati, yaṁ meti maññati, tato taṁ hoti aññathā.

Disciples, in regard to whatever one conceives, in whatever one conceives, from wherever one conceives, regarding whatever as ‘mine one conceives, it becomes otherwise.

Aññathābhāvī bhavasatto loko bhavamevābhinandati.

The world, in which beings are attached to existence, delights in becoming.

Yāvatā, bhikkhave, khandhadhātuāyatanaṁ tampi na maññati, tasmimpi na maññati, tatopi na maññati, taṁ meti na maññati.

Disciples, to whatever extent there are aggregates, elements, and bases, he does not conceive them as ‘mine, in that, or from that, does not conceive them at all.

So evaṁ amaññamāno na ca kiñci loke upādiyati.

Thus, not conceiving in this way, he does not cling to anything in the world.

Anupādiyaṁ na paritassati.

Not clinging, he is not perturbed.

Aparitassaṁ paccattaññeva parinibbāyati.

Being unperturbed, he personally attains final Nibbana.

‘Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānāti.

He knows: ‘Birth is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done is done, there is no more of this state here.

Ayaṁ kho sā, bhikkhave, sabbamaññitasamugghātasappāyā paṭipadā”ti.

This, indeed, is the path, O disciples, conducive to the removal of all speculative views.

Navamaṁ.
