Pamādavihārīsutta

Saḷavagga Pamādavihārīsutta “Pamādavihāriñca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi appamādavihāriñca.

I will teach you about one who dwells negligently and one who dwells diligently.

Taṁ suṇātha.

Listen to this.

Kathañca, bhikkhave, pamādavihārī hoti?

And how does one dwell negligently?

Cakkhundriyaṁ asaṁvutassa, bhikkhave, viharato cittaṁ byāsiñcati cakkhuviññeyyesu rūpesu.

When one dwells with the eye faculty unrestrained, the mind becomes distracted by forms cognizable by the eye.

tassa byāsittacittassa pāmojjaṁ na hoti.

For one with a distracted mind, there is no joy.

Pāmojje asati pīti na hoti.

Without joy, there is no pīti.

Pītiyā asati passaddhi na hoti.

Without pīti, there is no tranquility.

Passaddhiyā asati dukkhaṁ hoti.

Without tranquility, there is suffering.

Dukkhino cittaṁ na samādhiyati.

For one who is suffering, the mind does not become concentrated.

Asamāhite citte dhammā na pātubhavanti.

When the mind is not concentrated, phenomena do not become manifest.

Dhammānaṁ apātubhāvā pamādavihārītveva saṅkhaṁ gacchati …pe…

Because of the non-manifestation of phenomena, one is reckoned as dwelling negligently.

jivhindriyaṁ asaṁvutassa, bhikkhave, viharato cittaṁ byāsiñcati jivhāviññeyyesu rasesu, tassa byāsittacittassa …pe…

Similarly, when one dwells with the tongue faculty unrestrained, the mind becomes distracted by flavors cognizable by the tongue. For one with a distracted mind...

pamādavihārītveva saṅkhaṁ gacchati …pe…

one is reckoned as dwelling negligently.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pamādavihārī hoti.

Thus one dwells negligently.

And how does one dwell diligently?

Cakkhundriyaṁ saṁvutassa, bhikkhave, viharato cittaṁ na byāsiñcati cakkhuviññeyyesu rūpesu, tassa abyāsittacittassa pāmojjaṁ jāyati.

When one dwells with the eye faculty restrained, the mind does not become distracted by forms cognizable by the eye. For one with an undistracted mind, joy arises.

Pamuditassa pīti jāyati.

For one who is joyful, pīti arises.

Pītimanassa kāyo passambhati.

For one with pīti, the body becomes tranquil.

Passaddhakāyo sukhaṁ viharati.

For one with a tranquil body, one dwells happily.

Sukhino cittaṁ samādhiyati.

For one who is happy, the mind becomes concentrated.

Samāhite citte dhammā pātubhavanti.

When the mind is concentrated, phenomena become manifest.

Dhammānaṁ pātubhāvā appamādavihārītveva saṅkhaṁ gacchati …pe…
