Saḷavagga Saṁvarasutta “Saṁvarañca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, asaṁvarañca.

Disciples, I will teach you about restraint and lack of restraint.

Taṁ suṇātha.

Listen to this.

Kathañca, bhikkhave, asaṁvaro hoti?

And how is there lack of restraint?

Santi, bhikkhave, cakkhuviññeyyā rūpā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā.

There are forms cognizable by the eye that are desirable, lovely, agreeable, pleasing, connected with sense satisfaction, and enticing.

Tañce bhikkhu abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiṭṭhati, veditabbametaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā: ‘parihāyāmi kusalehi dhammehi.

If a disciple delights in them, welcomes them, and remains holding on to them, it should be known by the disciple that I am declining in wholesome states.

Parihānañhetaṁ vuttaṁ bhagavatā’ti …pe…

For this is called decline by the Blessed One.

There are tastes cognizable by the tongue...

santi, bhikkhave, manoviññeyyā dhammā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā.

There are mental phenomena cognizable by the mind that are desirable, lovely, agreeable, pleasing, connected with sense satisfaction, and enticing.

Tañce bhikkhu abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiṭṭhati, veditabbametaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā: ‘parihāyāmi kusalehi dhammehi.

Thus there is lack of restraint.

If a disciple does not delight in them, does not welcome them, and does not remain holding on to them, it should be known by the disciple that I am not declining in wholesome states.

Aparihānañhetaṁ vuttaṁ bhagavatā’ti …pe…

For this is called non-decline by the Blessed One...

There are tastes cognizable by the tongue...

Thus there is restraint.
