The Lion's Roar Discourse

Dutiyavagga Kinnusīhasutta Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā mahatiyā parisāya parivuto dhammaṁ deseti.

At that time, the Blessed One was surrounded by a large assembly, teaching the Dhamma.

Atha kho mārassa pāpimato etadahosi: “ayaṁ kho samaṇo gotamo mahatiyā parisāya parivuto dhammaṁ deseti.

Then it occurred to Māra the Evil One, This ascetic Gotama is surrounded by a large assembly, teaching the Dhamma.

Yannūnāhaṁ yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaṅkameyyaṁ vicakkhukammāyā”ti.

Let me approach the ascetic Gotama to create confusion.

Atha kho māro pāpimā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: “Kinnu sīhova nadasi, parisāyaṁ visārado; Paṭimallo hi te atthi, vijitāvī nu maññasī”ti.

Then Māra the Evil One approached the Blessed One and addressed him in verse:

Why do you roar like a lion, confident in the assembly? Do you have a rival, do you think you are victorious?

“Nadanti ve mahāvīrā, parisāsu visāradā; Tathāgatā balappattā, tiṇṇā loke visattikan”ti.

The great heroes do roar, confident in the assemblies; The Tathāgatas have attained strength, having crossed over the world's attachment.

Atha kho māro pāpimā “jānāti maṁ bhagavā, jānāti maṁ sugato”ti dukkhī dummano tatthevantaradhāyīti.

Then Māra the Evil One, realizing The Blessed One knows me, the Well-Gone One knows me, sorrowful and dejected, vanished right there.
