The Discourse on Underlying Tendencies
Oghavagga Anusayasutta “Sattime, bhikkhave, anusayā.
Disciples, there are these seven underlying tendencies.
Katame satta?
What seven?
Kāmarāgānusayo, paṭighānusayo, diṭṭhānusayo, vicikicchānusayo, mānānusayo, bhavarāgānusayo, avijjānusayo— ime kho, bhikkhave, sattānusayā. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, sattannaṁ anusayānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya …pe… ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo”ti. Pañcamaṁ.
The underlying tendency of sense satisfaction, the underlying tendency of aversion, the underlying tendency of views, the underlying tendency of doubt, the underlying tendency of conceit, the underlying tendency of desire for existence, the underlying tendency of ignorance: these are the seven underlying tendencies.
For the direct knowing, full knowing, complete destruction, and abandonment of these seven underlying tendencies, the Noble Eightfold Path should be developed.
