Jāṇussoṇibrāhmaṇasutta

Avijjāvagga Jāṇussoṇibrāhmaṇasutta Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Introduction from Sāvatthi.

Atha kho āyasmā ānando pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiṁ piṇḍāya pāvisi.

Then, in the morning, the venerable Ānanda, having dressed and taking his bowl and outer robe, entered Sāvatthi for alms.

Addasā kho āyasmā ānando jāṇussoṇiṁ brāhmaṇaṁ sabbasetena vaḷavābhirathena sāvatthiyā niyyāyantaṁ.

He saw the Brahmin Jāṇussoṇi being driven out of Sāvatthi in a completely white chariot drawn by mares.

Setā sudaṁ assā yuttā honti setālaṅkārā, seto ratho, setaparivāro, setā rasmiyo, setā patodalaṭṭhi, setaṁ chattaṁ, setaṁ uṇhīsaṁ, setāni vatthāni, setā upāhanā, setāya sudaṁ vālabījaniyā bījīyati.

The mares were white and adorned, the chariot was white, surrounded by white, with white reins, white whip, white umbrella, white turban, white garments, white sandals, and even the chariot's leather fittings were white.

Tamenaṁ jano disvā evamāha: “brahmaṁ vata, bho, yānaṁ.

Seeing him, people said: What a divine vehicle.

Brahmayānarūpaṁ vata, bho”ti.

Truly, it looks like a vehicle fit for the gods.

Atha kho āyasmā ānando sāvatthiyaṁ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṁ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.

After wandering for alms in Sāvatthi and after his meal, on returning from his alms round, Ānanda approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down at one side.

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “Idhāhaṁ, bhante, pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ.

Sitting at one side, the venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One: Here, venerable sir, in the morning, having dressed and taking my bowl and outer robe, I entered Sāvatthi for alms.

Addasaṁ khvāhaṁ, bhante, jāṇussoṇiṁ brāhmaṇaṁ sabbasetena vaḷavābhirathena sāvatthiyā niyyāyantaṁ.

I saw the Brahmin Jāṇussoṇi being driven out of Sāvatthi in a completely white chariot drawn by mares.

Setā sudaṁ assā yuttā honti setālaṅkārā, seto ratho, setaparivāro, setā rasmiyo, setā patodalaṭṭhi, setaṁ chattaṁ, setaṁ uṇhīsaṁ, setāni vatthāni, setā upāhanā, setāya sudaṁ vālabījaniyā bījīyati.

The mares were white and adorned, the chariot was white, surrounded by white, with white reins, white whip, white umbrella, white turban, white garments, white sandals, and even the chariot's leather fittings were white.

Tamenaṁ jano disvā evamāha: ‘brahmaṁ vata, bho, yānaṁ.

Seeing him, people said, What a divine vehicle.

Brahmayānarūpaṁ vata, bho’ti.

Truly, it looks like a vehicle fit for the gods.

Sakkā nu kho, bhante, imasmiṁ dhammavinaye brahmayānaṁ paññāpetun”ti?

Is it possible, venerable sir, to describe a divine vehicle in this Dhamma and Discipline?

“Sakkā, ānandā”ti bhagavā avoca: “imasseva kho etaṁ, ānanda, ariyassa aṭṭhaṅgikassa maggassa adhivacanaṁ: ‘brahmayānaṁ’ itipi, ‘dhammayānaṁ’ itipi, ‘anuttaro saṅgāmavijayo’ itipīti.

It is possible, Ānanda, the Blessed One said, This very Noble Eightfold Path is called the divine vehicle here, as well as the Dhamma vehicle and the unsurpassed victory in battle.

Sammādiṭṭhi, ānanda, bhāvitā bahulīkatā rāgavinayapariyosānā hoti, dosavinayapariyosānā hoti, mohavinayapariyosānā hoti.

Right view, Ānanda, when developed and cultivated, leads to the end of passion, to the end of aversion, to the end of delusion.

Sammāsaṅkappo, ānanda, bhāvito bahulīkato rāgavinayapariyosāno hoti, dosavinayapariyosāno hoti, mohavinayapariyosāno hoti.

Right intention... Right speech... Right action... Right livelihood...

Sammāvācā, ānanda, bhāvitā bahulīkatā rāgavinayapariyosānā hoti, dosa …pe… mohavinayapariyosānā hoti. Sammākammanto, ānanda, bhāvito bahulīkato rāgavinayapariyosāno hoti, dosa …pe…

Right effort... Right mindfulness... Right concentration, when developed and cultivated, leads to the end of passion, to the end of aversion, to the end of delusion.

mohavinayapariyosāno hoti. Sammāājīvo, ānanda, bhāvito bahulīkato rāgavinayapariyosāno hoti, dosa …pe… mohavinayapariyosāno hoti. Sammāvāyāmo, ānanda, bhāvito bahulīkato rāgavinayapariyosāno hoti, dosa …pe…

In this way, Ānanda, it should be known how this very Noble Eightfold Path is called the divine vehicle, the Dhamma vehicle, and the unsurpassed victory in battle.

mohavinayapariyosāno hoti.

This is what the Blessed One said.

Sammāsati, ānanda, bhāvitā bahulīkatā rāgavinayapariyosānā hoti, dosa …pe…

Having said this, the Fortunate One, the Teacher, further said:

mohavinayapariyosānā hoti.

Whoever has faith and wisdom,

Sammāsamādhi, ānanda, bhāvito bahulīkato rāgavinayapariyosāno hoti, dosa …pe…

Always yoked to the Dhamma's plow;

Modesty and respect guiding the mind,

mohavinayapariyosāno hoti.

Mindfulness as the charioteer.

Iminā kho etaṁ, ānanda, pariyāyena veditabbaṁ yathā imassevetaṁ ariyassa aṭṭhaṅgikassa maggassa adhivacanaṁ: ‘brahmayānaṁ’ itipi, ‘dhammayānaṁ’ itipi, ‘anuttaro saṅgāmavijayo’ itipī”ti. Idamavoca bhagavā. Idaṁ vatvāna sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā: “Yassa saddhā ca paññā ca, Dhammā yuttā sadā dhuraṁ; Hirī īsā mano yottaṁ, Sati ārakkhasārathi.

The vehicle equipped with virtue,

The energy of concentration as its wheels;

Equanimity as the supreme concentration,

Non-desire as the surrounding.

Ratho sīlaparikkhāro, jhānakkho cakkavīriyo; Upekkhā dhurasamādhi, anicchā parivāraṇaṁ.

Non-ill will and non-harming,

Seclusion as the weapon;

Endurance as the armor,

Abyāpādo avihiṁsā, viveko yassa āvudhaṁ; Titikkhā cammasannāho, yogakkhemāya vattati.

For the attainment of the ultimate safety.

Born from within oneself,

Etadattani sambhūtaṁ, brahmayānaṁ anuttaraṁ; Niyyanti dhīrā lokamhā, aññadatthu jayaṁ jayan”ti. Catutthaṁ.

This is the unsurpassed divine vehicle;

By which the wise are led away from this world,

Conquering the unconquered.
