Saṁyutta Nikāya 48.53 6.

Sekhasutta

Sūkarakhatavagga Sekhasutta Evaṁ me sutaṁ— ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosambiyaṁ viharati ghositārāme.

Thus have I heard: At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Kosambi in Ghositas Park.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “atthi nu kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma sekho bhikkhu sekhabhūmiyaṁ ṭhito ‘sekhosmī’ti pajāneyya, asekho bhikkhu asekhabhūmiyaṁ ṭhito ‘asekhosmī’ti pajāneyyā”ti?

There the Blessed One addressed the disciples: Is there a method by which a stream enterer disciple, standing on the stream enterer's ground, might know I am a stream enterer, and a arahant disciple, standing on the arahant's ground, might know I am a arahant?

“Bhagavaṁmūlakā no, bhante, dhammā …pe…

Our teachings are rooted in the Blessed One, venerable sir…

“atthi, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma sekho bhikkhu sekhabhūmiyaṁ ṭhito ‘sekhosmī’ti pajāneyya, asekho bhikkhu asekhabhūmiyaṁ ṭhito ‘asekhosmī’ti pajāneyya.

There is a method by which a stream enterer disciple, standing on the stream enterer's ground, might know I am a stream enterer, and a arahant disciple, standing on the arahant's ground, might know I am a arahant.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma sekho bhikkhu sekhabhūmiyaṁ ṭhito ‘sekhosmī’ti pajānāti?

And what is the method by which a stream enterer disciple, standing on the stream enterer's ground, knows I am a stream enterer?

Idha, bhikkhave, sekho bhikkhu ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, ‘ayaṁ dukkhasamudayo’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodho’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti— ayampi kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma sekho bhikkhu sekhabhūmiyaṁ ṭhito ‘sekhosmī’ti pajānāti.

Here a stream enterer disciple truly knows this is suffering, truly knows this is the origin of suffering, truly knows this is the cessation of suffering, truly knows this is the path leading to the cessation of suffering: this is the method by which a stream enterer disciple, standing on the stream enterer's ground, knows I am a stream enterer.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, sekho bhikkhu iti paṭisañcikkhati: ‘atthi nu kho ito bahiddhā añño samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā yo evaṁ bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ tathaṁ dhammaṁ deseti yathā bhagavā’ti?

Furthermore a stream enterer disciple reflects: Is there outside here any other ascetic or brahmin who teaches such true, real, and accurate Dhamma as the Blessed One?

So evaṁ pajānāti: ‘natthi kho ito bahiddhā añño samaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā yo evaṁ bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ tathaṁ dhammaṁ deseti yathā bhagavā’ti.

He knows: There is no other ascetic or brahmin outside here who teaches such true, real, and accurate Dhamma as the Blessed One.

Ayampi kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma sekho bhikkhu sekhabhūmiyaṁ ṭhito ‘sekhosmī’ti pajānāti.

This is the method by which a stream enterer disciple, standing on the stream enterer's ground, knows I am a stream enterer.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, sekho bhikkhu pañcindriyāni pajānāti— saddhindriyaṁ, vīriyindriyaṁ, satindriyaṁ, samādhindriyaṁ, paññindriyaṁ.

Again a stream enterer disciple knows the five faculties: the faculty of faith, the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, the faculty of wisdom.

Yaṅgatikāni yaṁparamāni yaṁphalāni yaṁpariyosānāni.

Their destinations, their ultimate goals, their fruits, and their end.

Na heva kho kāyena phusitvā viharati; paññāya ca ativijjha passati.

He does not live having touched them with the body; but sees them surpassed with wisdom.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma asekho bhikkhu asekhabhūmiyaṁ ṭhito ‘asekhosmī’ti pajānāti?

And what is the method by which a arahant disciple, standing on the arahant's ground, knows I am a arahant?

Idha, bhikkhave, asekho bhikkhu pañcindriyāni pajānāti— saddhindriyaṁ, vīriyindriyaṁ, satindriyaṁ, samādhindriyaṁ, paññindriyaṁ.

Here a arahant disciple knows the five faculties: the faculty of faith, the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, the faculty of wisdom.

Yaṅgatikāni yaṁparamāni yaṁphalāni yaṁpariyosānāni.

Their destinations, their ultimate goals, their fruits, and their end.

Kāyena ca phusitvā viharati; paññāya ca ativijjha passati.

He lives having touched them with the body; and sees them surpassed with wisdom.

Ayampi kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma asekho bhikkhu asekhabhūmiyaṁ ṭhito ‘asekhosmī’ti pajānāti.

This is the method by which a arahant disciple, standing on the arahant's ground, knows I am a arahant.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, asekho bhikkhu cha indriyāni pajānāti.

Furthermore a arahant disciple knows the six faculties.

‘Cakkhundriyaṁ, sotindriyaṁ, ghānindriyaṁ, jivhindriyaṁ, kāyindriyaṁ, manindriyaṁ— imāni kho cha indriyāni sabbena sabbaṁ sabbathā sabbaṁ aparisesaṁ nirujjhissanti, aññāni ca cha indriyāni na kuhiñci kismiñci uppajjissantī’ti pajānāti.

The eye faculty, the ear faculty, the nose faculty, the tongue faculty, the body faculty, the mind faculty: these six faculties will cease completely and without remainder, and no other six faculties will arise anywhere at all.

Ayampi kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma asekho bhikkhu asekhabhūmiyaṁ ṭhito ‘asekhosmī’ti pajānātī”ti.

This is the method by which a arahant disciple, standing on the arahant's ground,

Tatiyaṁ.

knows I am a arahant.
