Saṁyutta Nikāya 48.9 1.

The First Analysis Discourse

Suddhikavagga Paṭhamavibhaṅgasutta “Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, indriyāni. Katamāni pañca? Saddhindriyaṁ …pe… paññindriyaṁ.

Disciples, there are these five faculties.

What are the five?

The faculty of faith, the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, the faculty of wisdom.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaṁ?

And what is the faculty of faith?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathāgatassa bodhiṁ: ‘itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti— idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaṁ.

Here a noble disciple is faithful, they have faith in the enlightenment of the Blessed One: Indeed, the Blessed One is an arahant, perfectly enlightened, accomplished in true knowing and conduct, well-gone, knower of the worlds, incomparable leader of persons to be tamed, teacher of gods and humans, enlightened, blessed.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, vīriyindriyaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako āraddhavīriyo viharati akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya, kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ upasampadāya, thāmavā daḷhaparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu— idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, vīriyindriyaṁ.

This is called the faculty of faith.

And what is the faculty of energy?

Here a noble disciple, with energized effort, dwells committed to the relinquishment of unwholesome states and attainment of wholesome states, strong, unwavering in the pursuit of the wholesome. This is called the faculty of energy.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, satindriyaṁ?

And what is the faculty of mindfulness?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako satimā hoti paramena satinepakkena samannāgato cirakatampi cirabhāsitampi saritā anussaritā— idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, satindriyaṁ.

Here a noble disciple is mindful, endowed with perfect recollection and mindfulness, recalling and remembering what was done long ago and said long ago. This is called the faculty of mindfulness.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, samādhindriyaṁ?

And what is the faculty of concentration?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako vossaggārammaṇaṁ karitvā labhati samādhiṁ, labhati cittassa ekaggataṁ— idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, samādhindriyaṁ.

Here a noble disciple, having developed relinquishment, gains concentration and acquires one-pointedness of mind. This is called the faculty of concentration.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, paññindriyaṁ?

And what is the faculty of wisdom?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako paññavā hoti udayatthagāminiyā paññāya samannāgato ariyāya nibbedhikāya, sammā dukkhakkhayagāminiyā— idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, paññindriyaṁ.

Here a noble disciple is wise, endowed with wisdom that sees the arising and passing away of phenomena, noble and penetrating, leading to the complete destruction of suffering.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañcindriyānī”ti. Navamaṁ.

This is called the faculty of wisdom.

These are the five faculties, disciples.
