Saṁyutta Nikāya 54.20 2. Dutiyavagga Āsavakkhayasutta “…

The Discourse on the Destruction of the Taints

Āsavānaṁ khayāya saṁvattati. Kathaṁ bhāvito ca, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatisamādhi kathaṁ bahulīkato saṁyojanappahānāya saṁvattati …

And how, disciples, is mindfulness of breathing developed and made much of so that it leads to the abandonment of the fetters...

anusayasamugghātāya saṁvattati …

to the uprooting of latent tendencies...

addhānapariññāya saṁvattati …

to the full understanding of the path...

āsavānaṁ khayāya saṁvattati?

to the destruction of the taints?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu araññagato vā rukkhamūlagato vā …pe… paṭinissaggānupassī assasissāmīti sikkhati, paṭinissaggānupassī passasissāmīti sikkhati. Evaṁ bhāvito kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatisamādhi evaṁ bahulīkato saṁyojanappahānāya saṁvattati …pe…

Here, disciples, a disciple goes to the forest, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty place, and he trains thus: I shall breathe in contemplating relinquishment; I shall breathe out contemplating relinquishment.

anusayasamugghātāya saṁvattati …pe… addhānapariññāya saṁvattati …pe… āsavānaṁ khayāya saṁvattatī”ti. Dasamaṁ.

Mindfulness of breathing, when developed and cultivated in this way, leads to the abandonment of the fetters...

Dutiyo vaggo. Tassuddānaṁ Icchānaṅgalaṁ kaṅkheyyaṁ, ānandā apare duve; Bhikkhū saṁyojanānusayā, addhānaṁ āsavakkhayanti.

to the uprooting of latent tendencies... to the full understanding of the path...

Ānāpānasaṁyuttaṁ dasamaṁ.

to the destruction of the taints.
