Dutiyaphalasutta

Ekadhammavagga Dutiyaphalasutta “Ānāpānassati, bhikkhave, bhāvitā bahulīkatā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṁsā.

Mindfulness of breathing when developed and cultivated, is of great fruit and great benefit.

Kathaṁ bhāvitā ca, bhikkhave, ānāpānassati kathaṁ bahulīkatā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṁsā?

And how is mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated so that it is of great fruit and great benefit?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu araññagato vā rukkhamūlagato vā suññāgāragato vā nisīdati pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvā.

Here a disciple goes to the forest, to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, sits down, folds his legs crosswise, sets his body erect, and establishes mindfulness on itself.

So satova assasati, satova passasati …pe…

Ever mindful, he breathes in; ever mindful, he breathes out...

‘paṭinissaggānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘paṭinissaggānupassī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati.

He trains thus: I shall breathe in contemplating relinquishment; he trains thus: I shall breathe out contemplating relinquishment.

Evaṁ bhāvitā kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassati evaṁ bahulīkatā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṁsā.

Thus developed and cultivated mindfulness of breathing is of great fruit and great benefit.

Evaṁ bhāvitāya kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatiyā evaṁ bahulīkatāya satta phalā sattānisaṁsā pāṭikaṅkhā.

When developed and cultivated in this way, seven fruits and benefits are to be expected.

Katame satta phalā sattānisaṁsā?

What are the seven fruits and benefits?

Diṭṭheva dhamme paṭikacca aññaṁ ārādheti; no ce diṭṭheva dhamme paṭikacca aññaṁ ārādheti. Atha maraṇakāle aññaṁ ārādheti; no ce diṭṭheva dhamme paṭikacca aññaṁ ārādheti, no ce maraṇakāle aññaṁ ārādheti. Atha pañcannaṁ orambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ parikkhayā antarāparinibbāyī hoti … upahaccaparinibbāyī hoti …

One attains final knowing early in this very life; if not, then at the time of death; if not, then with the destruction of the five lower fetters, one becomes an attainer of Nibbāna in the interval; or an attainer of Nibbāna upon landing; or an attainer of Nibbāna without exertion; or an attainer of Nibbāna with exertion; or one bound upstream, heading towards the highest realm.

asaṅkhāraparinibbāyī hoti … sasaṅkhāraparinibbāyī hoti … uddhaṁsoto hoti akaniṭṭhagāmī— evaṁ bhāvitāya kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatiyā evaṁ bahulīkatāya ime satta phalā sattānisaṁsā pāṭikaṅkhā”ti. Pañcamaṁ.

Thus developed and cultivated mindfulness of breathing is of great fruit and great benefit, and these seven fruits and benefits are to be expected.
