Saṁyutta Nikāya 54.6 1.

Ariṭṭhasutta

Ekadhammavagga Ariṭṭhasutta Sāvatthinidānaṁ. Tatra kho bhagavā …pe…

Originating in Sāvatthi.

etadavoca: “bhāvetha no tumhe bhikkhave, ānāpānassatin”ti?

There the Blessed One said, Develop mindfulness of breathing, disciples.

Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā ariṭṭho bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “ahaṁ kho, bhante, bhāvemi ānāpānassatin”ti.

When this was said, Venerable Ariṭṭha said to the Blessed One, I develop mindfulness of breathing, venerable sir.

“Yathā kathaṁ pana tvaṁ, ariṭṭha, bhāvesi ānāpānassatin”ti?

But how do you develop mindfulness of breathing, Ariṭṭha? the Blessed One asked.

“Atītesu me, bhante, kāmesu kāmacchando pahīno, anāgatesu me kāmesu kāmacchando vigato, ajjhattabahiddhā ca me dhammesu paṭighasaññā suppaṭivinītā.

In the past, venerable sir, sense satisfaction for sensual pleasures has been abandoned by me, and in the future, sense satisfaction for sensual pleasures will be gone.

So satova assasissāmi, satova passasissāmi.

Internally and externally, perceptions of aversion have been well subdued.

Evaṁ khvāhaṁ, bhante, bhāvemi ānāpānassatin”ti.

Thus, I breathe in mindfully, and I breathe out mindfully.

“‘Atthesā, ariṭṭha, ānāpānassati, nesā natthī’ti vadāmi.

This is how I develop mindfulness of breathing, venerable sir.

Api ca, ariṭṭha, yathā ānāpānassati vitthārena paripuṇṇā hoti taṁ suṇāhi, sādhukaṁ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmī”ti.

That is indeed mindfulness of breathing, Ariṭṭha, but it is not complete. Listen, Ariṭṭha, and I will explain how mindfulness of breathing is fully developed.

“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho āyasmā ariṭṭho bhagavato paccassosi.

Yes, venerable sir, Venerable Ariṭṭha replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: “Kathañca, ariṭṭha, ānāpānassati vitthārena paripuṇṇā hoti?

The Blessed One said, And how, Ariṭṭha, is mindfulness of breathing fully developed?

Idha, ariṭṭha, bhikkhu araññagato vā rukkhamūlagato vā suññāgāragato vā nisīdati pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvā.

Here, Ariṭṭha, a disciple goes to the forest, to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, sits down, crosses his legs, keeps his body upright, and establishes mindfulness on itself.

So satova assasati, satova passasati.

Mindfully he breathes in, and mindfully he breathes out.

Dīghaṁ vā assasanto ‘dīghaṁ assasāmī’ti pajānāti …pe…

Breathing in long, he knows, I breathe in long; breathing out long, he knows, I breathe out long...

‘paṭinissaggānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘paṭinissaggānupassī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati.

He trains thus: I will breathe in contemplating relinquishment; he trains thus: I will breathe out contemplating relinquishment.

Evaṁ kho, ariṭṭha, ānāpānassati vitthārena paripuṇṇā hotī”ti. Chaṭṭhaṁ.

This is how, Ariṭṭha, mindfulness of breathing is fully developed.
