Mahākappinasutta

Ekadhammavagga Mahākappinasutta Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Originating in Sāvatthi.

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā mahākappino bhagavato avidūre nisinno hoti pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvā.

At that time, Venerable Mahākappina was sitting not far from the Blessed One, having folded his legs crosswise, set his body erect, and established mindfulness on itself.

Addasā kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ mahākappinaṁ avidūre nisinnaṁ pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvā.

The Blessed One saw Venerable Mahākappina sitting not far away, having folded his legs crosswise, set his body erect, and established mindfulness on itself.

Disvāna bhikkhū āmantesi: “Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, etassa bhikkhuno kāyassa iñjitattaṁ vā phanditattaṁ vā”ti?

Seeing him, he addressed the disciples: Do you see any movement or trembling in this disciples body?

“Yadāpi mayaṁ, bhante, taṁ āyasmantaṁ passāma saṅghamajjhe vā nisinnaṁ ekaṁ vā raho nisinnaṁ, tadāpi mayaṁ tassa āyasmato na passāma kāyassa iñjitattaṁ vā phanditattaṁ vā”ti.

Even when we see that venerable one sitting in the midst of the Sangha or sitting alone in seclusion, we do not see any movement or trembling in his body.

“Yassa, bhikkhave, samādhissa bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā neva kāyassa iñjitattaṁ vā hoti phanditattaṁ vā, na cittassa iñjitattaṁ vā hoti phanditattaṁ vā, tassa so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu samādhissa nikāmalābhī akicchalābhī akasiralābhī.

Disciples, when a disciple has developed and cultivated concentration to such an extent that there is neither movement nor trembling in his body, nor movement nor trembling in his mind, that disciple is an attainer of concentration at will, without trouble, without difficulty.

Katamassa ca, bhikkhave, samādhissa bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā neva kāyassa iñjitattaṁ vā hoti phanditattaṁ vā, na cittassa iñjitattaṁ vā hoti phanditattaṁ vā?

And what kind of concentration when developed and cultivated, leads to neither movement nor trembling in the body, nor movement nor trembling in the mind?

Ānāpānassatisamādhissa, bhikkhave, bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā neva kāyassa iñjitattaṁ vā hoti phanditattaṁ vā, na cittassa iñjitattaṁ vā hoti phanditattaṁ vā.

It is the concentration by mindfulness of breathing that when developed and cultivated, leads to neither movement nor trembling in the body, nor movement nor trembling in the mind.

Kathaṁ bhāvite ca, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatisamādhimhi kathaṁ bahulīkate neva kāyassa iñjitattaṁ vā hoti phanditattaṁ vā, na cittassa iñjitattaṁ vā hoti phanditattaṁ vā?

And how is mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated so that there is neither movement nor trembling in the body, nor movement nor trembling in the mind?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu araññagato vā rukkhamūlagato vā suññāgāragato vā nisīdati pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvā.

Here a disciple goes to the forest, to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, sits down, folds his legs crosswise, sets his body erect, and establishes mindfulness on itself.

So satova assasati, satova passasati …pe…

Mindfully he breathes in, mindfully he breaths out...

‘paṭinissaggānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘paṭinissaggānupassī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati.

He trains thus: I shall breathe in contemplating relinquishment; he trains thus: I shall breathe out contemplating relinquishment.

Evaṁ bhāvite ca kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatisamādhimhi evaṁ bahulīkate neva kāyassa iñjitattaṁ vā hoti phanditattaṁ vā, na cittassa iñjitattaṁ vā hoti phanditattaṁ vā”ti. Sattamaṁ.

It is in this way that mindfulness of breathing is developed and cultivated so that there is neither movement nor trembling in the body, nor movement nor trembling in the mind.
