Saṁyutta Nikāya 55.5 1.

The Discourse to Sāriputta the Second

Veḷudvāravagga Dutiyasāriputtasutta Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.

Then Venerable Sāriputta approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, and sat down to one side.

Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ bhagavā etadavoca: “‘sotāpattiyaṅgaṁ, sotāpattiyaṅgan’ti hidaṁ, sāriputta, vuccati.

Sitting to one side, the Blessed One said to him: The factors of stream-entry, the factors of stream-entry, Sāriputta, that is said.

Katamaṁ nu kho, sāriputta, sotāpattiyaṅgan”ti?

But what, Sāriputta, are the factors of stream-entry?

“Sappurisasaṁsevo hi, bhante, sotāpattiyaṅgaṁ, saddhammassavanaṁ sotāpattiyaṅgaṁ, yonisomanasikāro sotāpattiyaṅgaṁ, dhammānudhammappaṭipatti sotāpattiyaṅgan”ti.

Association with good persons, venerable sir, is a factor of stream-entry; listening to the true Dhamma is a factor of stream-entry; proper attention is a factor of stream-entry; practicing in accordance with the Dhamma is a factor of stream-entry.

“Sādhu sādhu, sāriputta.

Well said, well said, Sāriputta.

Sappurisasaṁsevo hi, sāriputta, sotāpattiyaṅgaṁ, saddhammassavanaṁ sotāpattiyaṅgaṁ, yonisomanasikāro sotāpattiyaṅgaṁ, dhammānudhammappaṭipatti sotāpattiyaṅgaṁ.

Association with good persons, Sāriputta, is a factor of stream-entry; listening to the true Dhamma is a factor of stream-entry; proper attention is a factor of stream-entry; practicing in accordance with the Dhamma is a factor of stream-entry.

‘Soto, soto’ti hidaṁ, sāriputta, vuccati.

Hearing, hearing, Sāriputta, that is said.

Katamo nu kho, sāriputta, soto”ti?

But what, Sāriputta, is hearing?

“Ayameva hi, bhante, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo soto, seyyathidaṁ— sammādiṭṭhi, sammāsaṅkappo, sammāvācā, sammākammanto, sammāājīvo, sammāvāyāmo, sammāsati, sammāsamādhī”ti.

This noble eightfold path, venerable sir, is hearing, namely: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.

“Sādhu sādhu, sāriputta.

Well said, well said, Sāriputta.

Ayameva hi, sāriputta, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo soto, seyyathidaṁ— sammādiṭṭhi …pe…

This noble eightfold path, Sāriputta, is hearing, namely: right view...

sammāsamādhi.

right concentration.

‘Sotāpanno, sotāpanno’ti hidaṁ, sāriputta, vuccati.

One who has entered the stream, one who has entered the stream, Sāriputta, that is said.

Katamo nu kho, sāriputta, sotāpanno”ti?

But who, Sāriputta, is one who has entered the stream?

“Yo hi, bhante, iminā ariyena aṭṭhaṅgikena maggena samannāgato ayaṁ vuccati sotāpanno, svāyaṁ āyasmā evaṁnāmo evaṅgotto”ti. “Sādhu sādhu, sāriputta. Yo hi, sāriputta, iminā ariyena aṭṭhaṅgikena maggena samannāgato ayaṁ vuccati sotāpanno, svāyaṁ āyasmā evaṁnāmo evaṅgotto”ti. Pañcamaṁ.

Venerable sir, one who possesses this noble eightfold path is called one who has entered the stream, the venerable one himself is of such a name and such a nature. Well said, well said, Sāriputta.
