Saṁyutta Nikāya 56.17 2.
Discourse on Ignorance
Dhammacakkappavattanavagga Avijjāsutta Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “‘avijjā, avijjā’ti, bhante, vuccati.
While sitting to one side, a disciple said to the Blessed One: Venerable sir, it is said, ignorance, ignorance.
Katamā nu kho, bhante, avijjā; kittāvatā ca avijjāgato hotī”ti?
What, venerable sir, is ignorance; and how is one caught in ignorance?
“Yaṁ kho, bhikkhu, dukkhe aññāṇaṁ, dukkhasamudaye aññāṇaṁ, dukkhanirodhe aññāṇaṁ, dukkhanirodhagāminiyā paṭipadāya aññāṇaṁ— ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhu, avijjā; ettāvatā ca avijjāgato hotīti.
Disciple, not knowing suffering, not knowing the origin of suffering, not knowing the cessation of suffering, not knowing the path leading to the cessation of suffering: this is called ignorance, disciple; and this is how one is caught in ignorance.
Tasmātiha, bhikkhu, ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yogo karaṇīyo …pe…
Therefore This is suffering should be known …
‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yogo karaṇīyo”ti. Sattamaṁ.
This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering should be known.
