Saṁyutta Nikāya 56.18 2.
Vijjāsutta
Dhammacakkappavattanavagga Vijjāsutta Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.
Then a certain disciple approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side.
Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “‘vijjā, vijjā’ti, bhante, vuccati.
While sitting to one side, that disciple said to the Blessed One: Knowing, knowing, it is said, venerable sir.
Katamā nu kho, bhante, vijjā; kittāvatā ca vijjāgato hotī”ti?
What, venerable sir, is knowing; and to what extent is one endowed with knowing?
“Yaṁ kho, bhikkhu, dukkhe ñāṇaṁ, dukkhasamudaye ñāṇaṁ, dukkhanirodhe ñāṇaṁ, dukkhanirodhagāminiyā paṭipadāya ñāṇaṁ— ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhu, vijjā; ettāvatā ca vijjāgato hotīti.
Disciple, the knowing of suffering, the knowing of the origin of suffering, the knowing of the cessation of suffering, the knowing of the path leading to the cessation of suffering: this is called knowing, disciple; and to this extent one is endowed with knowing.
Tasmātiha, bhikkhu, ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yogo karaṇīyo …pe…
Therefore This is suffering should be known …
‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yogo karaṇīyo”ti. Aṭṭhamaṁ.
This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering should be known.
