Parinibbāna Sutta

Dutiyavagga Parinibbānasutta Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kusinārāyaṁ viharati upavattane mallānaṁ sālavane antarena yamakasālānaṁ parinibbānasamaye.

At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling at Kusinara, in the grove of the Mallas, between the twin sal trees, at the time of his final passing away.

Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “handa dāni, bhikkhave, āmantayāmi vo: ‘vayadhammā saṅkhārā, appamādena sampādethā’”ti.

Then the Blessed One addressed the disciples: Now I address you: All conditioned things are subject to decay. Strive on with diligence.

Ayaṁ tathāgatassa pacchimā vācā.

These were the last words of the Tathagata.

Atha kho bhagavā paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ samāpajji.

Then the Blessed One entered the first jhāna.

Paṭhamā jhānā vuṭṭhahitvā dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ samāpajji.

Emerging from the first jhāna, he entered the second jhāna.

Dutiyā jhānā vuṭṭhahitvā tatiyaṁ jhānaṁ samāpajji.

Emerging from the second jhāna, he entered the third jhāna.

Tatiyā jhānā vuṭṭhahitvā catutthaṁ jhānaṁ samāpajji.

Emerging from the third jhāna, he entered the fourth jhāna.

Catutthā jhānā vuṭṭhahitvā ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ samāpajji.

Emerging from the fourth jhāna, he entered the realm of infinite space.

Ākāsānañcāyatanā vuṭṭhahitvā viññāṇañcāyatanaṁ samāpajji.

Emerging from the realm of infinite space, he entered the realm of infinite consciousness.

Viññāṇañcāyatanā vuṭṭhahitvā ākiñcaññāyatanaṁ samāpajji.

Emerging from the realm of infinite consciousness, he entered the realm of nothingness.

Ākiñcaññāyatanā vuṭṭhahitvā nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṁ samāpajji.

Emerging from the realm of nothingness, he entered the realm of neither-perception-nor-non-perception.

Nevasaññānāsaññāyatanā vuṭṭhahitvā saññāvedayitanirodhaṁ samāpajji.

Emerging from the realm of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, he entered the cessation of perception and feeling.

Saññāvedayitanirodhā vuṭṭhahitvā nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṁ samāpajji.

Emerging from the cessation of perception and feeling, he entered the realm of neither-perception-nor-non-perception.

Nevasaññānāsaññāyatanā vuṭṭhahitvā ākiñcaññāyatanaṁ samāpajji.

Emerging from the realm of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, he entered the realm of nothingness.

Ākiñcaññāyatanā vuṭṭhahitvā viññāṇañcāyatanaṁ samāpajji.

Emerging from the realm of nothingness, he entered the realm of infinite consciousness.

Viññāṇañcāyatanā vuṭṭhahitvā ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ samāpajji.

Emerging from the realm of infinite consciousness, he entered the realm of infinite space.

Ākāsānañcāyatanā vuṭṭhahitvā catutthaṁ jhānaṁ samāpajji.

Emerging from the realm of infinite space, he entered the fourth jhāna.

Catutthā jhānā vuṭṭhahitvā tatiyaṁ jhānaṁ samāpajji.

Emerging from the fourth jhāna, he entered the third jhāna.

Tatiyā jhānā vuṭṭhahitvā dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ samāpajji.

Emerging from the third jhāna, he entered the second jhāna.

Dutiyā jhānā vuṭṭhahitvā paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ samāpajji.

Emerging from the second jhāna, he entered the first jhāna.

Catutthā jhānā vuṭṭhahitvā samanantaraṁ bhagavā parinibbāyi.

Emerging from the fourth jhāna, immediately, the Blessed One attained final Nibbana.

Parinibbute bhagavati saha parinibbānā brahmā sahampati imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: “Sabbeva nikkhipissanti, bhūtā loke samussayaṁ; Yattha etādiso satthā, loke appaṭipuggalo; Tathāgato balappatto, sambuddho parinibbuto”ti.

Upon the Blessed One's final passing, at the moment of his final Nibbana, Brahma Sahampati uttered this verse: All beings will lay down their burden, those in the world with form; where such a teacher as this has passed, unmatched in the world; the Tathagata, endowed with strength, the Fully Awakened One, has attained final Nibbana.

Parinibbute bhagavati saha parinibbānā sakko devānamindo imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: “Aniccā vata saṅkhārā, uppādavayadhammino; Uppajjitvā nirujjhanti, tesaṁ vūpasamo sukho”ti.

Upon the Blessed One's final passing, at the moment of his final Nibbana, Sakka, the lord of the devas, uttered this verse: Impermanent indeed are all conditioned things, of a nature to arise and pass away; having arisen, they cease; their calming is bliss.

Parinibbute bhagavati saha parinibbānā āyasmā ānando imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: “Tadāsi yaṁ bhiṁsanakaṁ, tadāsi lomahaṁsanaṁ; Sabbākāravarūpete, sambuddhe parinibbute”ti.

Upon the Blessed One's final passing, at the moment of his final Nibbana, the Venerable Ananda uttered this verse: There was a great fear, there was a great trembling; when the Fully Awakened One, of supreme form, attained final Nibbana.

Parinibbute bhagavati saha parinibbānā āyasmā anuruddho imā gāthāyo abhāsi: “Nāhu assāsapassāso, ṭhitacittassa tādino; Anejo santimārabbha, cakkhumā parinibbuto.

Upon the passing of the Blessed One, along with his final liberation, the venerable Anuruddha spoke these verses:

Asallīnena cittena, vedanaṁ ajjhavāsayi; Pajjotasseva nibbānaṁ, vimokkho cetaso ahū”ti. Dutiyo vaggo.

There is no inhalation or exhalation,

For one whose mind is steadfast and such;

Unshaken, having attained peace,

Tassuddānaṁ Brahmāsanaṁ devadatto, Andhakavindo aruṇavatī; Parinibbānena ca desitaṁ, Idaṁ brahmapañcakanti.

The one with vision has attained final liberation.

With an untroubled mind,

He endured sensation;

Like the extinguishing of a lamp,

Brahmasaṁyuttaṁ samattaṁ.

There was liberation of the mind.
