AN11.3 — The Discourse on the First Support
Disciples, for one who is immoral, who has fallen from virtue, the support for non-remorse is destroyed. In the absence of non-remorse, the support for joy is destroyed. In the absence of joy, the support for rapture is destroyed. In the absence of rapture, the support for tranquility is destroyed. In the absence of tranquility, the support for happiness is destroyed. In the absence of happiness, the support for right concentration is destroyed. In the absence of right concentration, the support for knowing and vision of things as they really are is destroyed. In the absence of knowing and vision of things as they really are, the support for disenchantment is destroyed. In the absence of disenchantment, the support for dispassion is destroyed. In the absence of dispassion, the support for the knowing and vision of liberation is destroyed.
Just as a tree that is deficient in branches and leaves does not reach fullness in its shoots, bark, sapwood, or heartwood, in the same way for one who is immoral, who has fallen from virtue, the support for non-remorse is destroyed, ..., up to the knowing and vision of liberation.
For one who is virtuous who is accomplished in virtue, the support for non-remorse is complete. With non-remorse, the support for joy is complete. With joy, the support for rapture is complete. With rapture, the support for tranquility is complete. With tranquility, the support for happiness is complete. With happiness, the support for right concentration is complete. With right concentration, the support for knowing and vision of things as they really are is complete. With knowing and vision of things as they really are, the support for disenchantment is complete. With disenchantment, the support for dispassion is complete. With dispassion, the support for the knowing and vision of liberation is complete.
Just as a tree that is complete in branches and leaves reaches fullness in its shoots, bark, sapwood, and heartwood, in the same way for one who is virtuous, who is accomplished in virtue, the support for non-remorse is complete, ....
