AN11.4 — In the Aṅguttara Nikāya 11.41, the Dutiyaupanisāsutta, Venerable Sāriputta addressed the disciples, saying, Friends, disciples. The disciples responded, Friend, to Venerable Sāriputta. Venerable Sāriputta then spoke:

For one who is immoral, friends, who has fallen from virtue, the absence of remorse is destroyed. When there is no absence of remorse, for one who has fallen from the absence of remorse, joy is destroyed. When there is no joy, for one who has fallen from joy, rapture is destroyed. When there is no rapture, for one who has fallen from rapture, tranquility is destroyed. When there is no tranquility, for one who has fallen from tranquility, happiness is destroyed. When there is no happiness, for one who has fallen from happiness, right concentration is destroyed. When there is no right concentration, for one who has fallen from right concentration, knowing and vision of things as they really are is destroyed. When there is no knowing and vision of things as they really are, for one who has fallen from this knowing and vision, disenchantment is destroyed. When there is no disenchantment, for one who has fallen from disenchantment, dispassion is destroyed. When there is no dispassion, for one who has fallen from dispassion, the knowing and vision of liberation is destroyed.

Just as, friends, a tree that is deficient in branches and leaves, its bark, sapwood, and heartwood do not reach fulfillment. In the same way, friends, for one who is immoral, who has fallen from virtue, the absence of remorse is destroyed, ..., up to the knowing and vision of liberation.

For one who is virtuous, friends, who is accomplished in virtue, the presence of the absence of remorse is established. When there is the presence of the absence of remorse, for one who is accomplished in the absence of remorse, joy is established. When there is joy, for one who is accomplished in joy, rapture is established. When there is rapture, for one who is accomplished in rapture, tranquility is established. When there is tranquility, for one who is accomplished in tranquility, happiness is established. When there is happiness, for one who is accomplished in happiness, right concentration is established. When there is right concentration, for one who is accomplished in right concentration, knowing and vision of things as they really are is established. When there is knowing and vision of things as they really are, for one who is accomplished in this knowing and vision, disenchantment is established. When there is disenchantment, for one who is accomplished in disenchantment, dispassion is established. When there is dispassion, for one who is accomplished in dispassion, the knowing and vision of liberation is established.

Just as, friends, a tree that is abundant in branches and leaves, its bark, sapwood, and heartwood reach fulfillment. In the same way, friends, for one who is virtuous, who is accomplished in virtue, the presence of the absence of remorse is established.
