AN5.114 — Andhakavindasutta

At one time, the Blessed One was staying in Andhakavinda in the land of the Magadhans.

Then Venerable Ānanda approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid respects to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. While sitting to one side, the Blessed One said to Venerable Ānanda:

Ānanda, those disciples who are new, recently gone forth, and have come to this Dhamma and Discipline, should be encouraged, settled, and established in five things.

What five?

Come, friends, be virtuous, live restrained by the restraint of the Pātimokkha, be perfect in conduct and resort, and seeing danger in the slightest faults, train by undertaking the training precepts: thus they should be encouraged, settled, and established in the restraint of the Pātimokkha.

Come, friends, guard the doors of your sense faculties, be possessed of mindfulness and full awareness, and be endowed with careful attention and mindfulness: thus they should be encouraged, settled, and established in the restraint of the sense faculties.

Come, friends, be moderate in eating, and be content with what you receive: thus they should be encouraged, settled, and established in moderation in eating.

Come, friends, be devoted to wakefulness, frequenting remote lodgings in forests and jungle groves, and be devoted to solitude: thus they should be encouraged, settled, and established in devotion to wakefulness.

Come, friends, be possessed of right view, and be endowed with right vision: thus they should be encouraged, settled, and established in right vision.

Ānanda, those disciples who are new, recently gone forth, and have come to this Dhamma and Discipline, should be encouraged, settled, and established in these five things.
