AN5.96 — Sutadharasutta

Disciples, a disciple endowed with five qualities, while cultivating mindfulness of breathing, will soon penetrate the unshakable.

What are the five?

Here a disciple is not burdensome, has few duties, is easy to support, and is content with the necessities of life;

He eats little and is devoted to moderation in eating;

He is not lazy and is devoted to wakefulness;

He is learned, a bearer of the teachings, a keeper of the teachings, those teachings that are good in the beginning, good in the middle, good in the end, with the right meaning and phrasing, complete, pure, and the holy life is declared; such teachings are well learned by him, remembered, recited verbally, examined mentally, and well penetrated by view;

He reviews the mind as it is liberated.

A disciple endowed with these five qualities, while cultivating mindfulness of breathing, will soon penetrate the unshakable.
