Disciples, when there is no mindfulness and clear knowing, the foundation for moral shame and moral dread is destroyed.

When there is no moral shame and moral dread, the foundation for sense restraint is destroyed.

When there is no sense restraint, the foundation for virtue is destroyed.

When there is no virtue, the foundation for right concentration is destroyed.

When there is no right concentration, the foundation for knowing and vision of things as they really are is destroyed.

When there is no knowing and vision of things as they really are, the foundation for disenchantment and dispassion is destroyed.

When there is no disenchantment and dispassion, the foundation for the knowing and vision of liberation is destroyed.

Just as when a tree is without branches and leaves, its bark, sapwood, and heartwood do not reach completion.

In the same way when there is no mindfulness and clear knowing, the foundation for moral shame and moral dread is destroyed;
