KN.DHP197-208 — The Chapter on Happiness
Truly, we live happily, not hating among those who hate; among people who hate, we dwell free from hatred.
Truly, we live happily, healthy among the sick; among people who are sick, we dwell free from sickness.
Truly, we live happily, without anxiety among the anxious; among people who are anxious, we dwell free from anxiety.
Truly, we live happily, possessing nothing; we shall feed on joy, like the radiant gods.
Victory breeds hatred; the defeated live in pain. Happily the peaceful live, having given up victory and defeat.
There is no fire like passion, no loss like anger, no suffering like the aggregates, no happiness higher than peace.
Hunger is the greatest disease, formations are the greatest suffering. Knowing this as it truly is, Nibbāna is the highest happiness.
Health is the greatest gain, contentment is the greatest wealth, trust is the best relative, Nibbāna is the highest happiness.
Having tasted the flavor of seclusion and the flavor of peace, one becomes free from fear and sin, drinking the joy of the Dhamma.
It is good to see the noble ones; their company is always a joy. By not seeing fools, one can be happy always.
He who associates with fools suffers for a long time. Living with fools is always painful, like living with an enemy. But living with the wise is a joy, like meeting with relatives.
Therefore, associate with the wise, the intelligent, the learned, the enduring, the dutiful, the noble. Follow such a good and wise person, as the moon follows the path of the stars.
