KN.PS2.3 — Discourse on the Factors of Enlightenment
Originating in Sāvatthi. Disciples, there are these seven factors of enlightenment. What are the seven? The mindfulness factor of enlightenment, the investigation of states factor of enlightenment, the energy factor of enlightenment, the joy factor of enlightenment, the tranquility factor of enlightenment, the concentration factor of enlightenment, the equanimity factor of enlightenment: these are the seven factors of enlightenment.
Because they lead to enlightenment: they are called factors of enlightenment. Because they awaken: they are called factors of enlightenment. Because they reawaken: they are called factors of enlightenment. Because they fully awaken: they are called factors of enlightenment. Because they completely awaken: they are called factors of enlightenment. In the sense of awakening, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of reawakening, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of fully awakening, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of completely awakening, they are called factors of enlightenment.
Because they cause enlightenment: they are called factors of enlightenment. Because they cause reawakening: they are called factors of enlightenment. Because they cause full awakening: they are called factors of enlightenment. Because they cause complete awakening: they are called factors of enlightenment. In the sense of causing enlightenment, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of causing reawakening, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of causing full awakening, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of causing complete awakening, they are called factors of enlightenment.
In the sense of being requisites for enlightenment, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of being requisites for reawakening, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of being requisites for full awakening, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of being requisites for complete awakening, they are called factors of enlightenment.
In the sense of obtaining wisdom, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of re-obtaining wisdom, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of planting wisdom, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of firmly planting wisdom, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of bringing wisdom to maturity, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of fully maturing wisdom, they are called factors of enlightenment.

In the sense of being the root, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of having the conduct of the root, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of grasping the root, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of having the retinue of the root, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of fulfilling the root, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of maturing the root, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the analytical knowing of the root, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of bringing the analytical knowing of the root to maturity, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of mastery in the analytical knowing of the root, they are called factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery in the analytical knowing of the root, they are called factors of enlightenment.
In the sense of being the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of having the conduct of the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of grasping the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of having the retinue of the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of fulfilling the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of maturing the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the analytical knowing of the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of bringing the analytical knowing of the cause to maturity, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of mastery in the analytical knowing of the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery in the analytical knowing of the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment.

By the attribute of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the conduct of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the acquisition of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the accompaniment of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the fulfillment of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the maturation of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the discernment of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the attainment of discernment of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the mastery of discernment of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery of discernment of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment.
By the attribute of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the conduct of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the acquisition of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the accompaniment of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the fulfillment of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the maturation of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the discernment of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the attainment of discernment of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the mastery of discernment of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery of discernment of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment.
By the attribute of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the conduct of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the acquisition of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the accompaniment of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the fulfillment of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the maturation of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the discernment of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the attainment of discernment of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the mastery of discernment of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery of discernment of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment.
By the attribute of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the conduct of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the acquisition of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the accompaniment of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the fulfillment of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the maturation of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the discernment of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the attainment of discernment of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the mastery of discernment of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery of discernment of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment.
By the attribute of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the conduct of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the acquisition of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the accompaniment of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the fulfillment of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the maturation of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the discernment of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the attainment of discernment of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the mastery of discernment of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery of discernment of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment.
By the attribute of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the conduct of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the acquisition of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the accompaniment of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the fulfillment of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the maturation of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the discernment of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the attainment of discernment of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the mastery of discernment of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery of discernment of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment.
In the sense of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the practice of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the acquisition of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the accompaniment of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the fulfillment of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the maturation of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the discrimination of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the attainment of the discrimination of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; in the sense of mastery in the discrimination of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery in the discrimination of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment.
In the sense of the root, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of the cause, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of the condition, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of being without defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment.
In the sense of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of the practice of the root, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of the practice of the cause, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of the practice of the condition, they are the factors of enlightenment.
In the sense of the practice of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of the practice of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of the practice of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of the practice of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of the practice of being without defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment.
In the sense of the practice of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of the practice of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment. In the sense of the acquisition of the root, they are the factors of enlightenment ... ... ...

They know the state of non-diffusion: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of non-turbidity: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of non-staining: bojjhaṅgā.
They know the state of stability of the mind through the presence of unity: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of the object: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of the range: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of abandonment: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of renunciation: bojjhaṅgā.

They know the state of being without taints: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of crossing over: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of signlessness: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of desirelessness: bojjhaṅgā.
They know the state of emptiness: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of singular taste: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of non-transgression: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of being yoked together: bojjhaṅgā.
They know the state of leading out: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of cause: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of seeing: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of dominance: bojjhaṅgā.
They know the state of non-distraction in tranquility: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of observation in insight: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of singular taste in tranquility and insight: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of non-transgression in being yoked together: bojjhaṅgā.
They know the state of undertaking in training: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of the range of the object: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of exertion of the mind that is absorbed: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of restraint of the mind that is agitated: bojjhaṅgā. They know the state of equanimity towards both purities: bojjhaṅgā. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken the unshakable state of the powers. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken the state of liberation. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken the cause of the path. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken the establishment of the foundations of mindfulness.
They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken the effort of the right exertions. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken the accomplishment of the bases of spiritual power. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken the truth of the truths. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken the calming of efforts.
They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken the realization of the fruits. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken the application of thought. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken the examination of investigation. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken the pervasion of joy.
They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken the saturation of happiness. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken the one-pointedness of the mind. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken the attention. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken the knowing.

They know the basis of the mind: these are the factors of enlightenment. They know the ground of the mind: these are the factors of enlightenment. They know the conduct of the mind: these are the factors of enlightenment.
They know the destination of the mind: these are the factors of enlightenment. They know the inclination of the mind: these are the factors of enlightenment. They know the leading out of the mind: these are the factors of enlightenment. They know the liberation of the mind: these are the factors of enlightenment.
They know the reflection in unity: these are the factors of enlightenment. They know the knowing in unity: these are the factors of enlightenment. They know the knowing in unity: these are the factors of enlightenment. They know the perceiving in unity: these are the factors of enlightenment. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of the conditioned nature of suffering. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of the burning of suffering.
They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of the change of suffering. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of arising. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of accumulation, the state of cause, the state of conjunction, the state of bondage of arising.
They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of cessation. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of escape, the state of seclusion, the state of the unconditioned, the state of the deathless of cessation.
They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of the path. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of leading out, the state of cause, the state of seeing, the state of supremacy of the path.
They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of suchness. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of non-self. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of truth. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of penetration.
They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of direct knowing.
They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of full knowing. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of the Dhamma. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of elements. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of knowing. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of realization. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of contact. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of the fruition of arahantship. They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of faith faculty in the sense of resolution ... up to ... the state of wisdom faculty in the sense of seeing.
They are called bojjhaṅgā because they awaken to the state of the power of faith in the sense of unshakability in faithlessness ... up to ... the state of the power of wisdom in the sense of unshakability in ignorance.
By the meaning of reflection, they know the enlightenment factor of equanimity: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of seeing, they know right view: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of non-distraction, they know right concentration: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of predominance, they know the faculty: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of unshakability, they know the power: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of leading out, they know the path: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of cause, they know the path: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of establishment, they know the establishment of mindfulness: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of striving, they know right effort: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of accomplishment, they know the basis of spiritual power: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of truth, they know the truth: thus they are called enlightenment factors.
By the meaning of non-distraction, they know tranquility: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of observation, they know insight: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of single taste, they know tranquility and insight: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of non-transgression, they know the combined practice: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of restraint, they know purity of virtue: thus they are called enlightenment factors.
By the meaning of non-distraction, they know purity of mind: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of seeing, they know purity of view: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of liberation, they know release: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of penetration, they know knowing: thus they are called enlightenment factors.
By the meaning of relinquishment, they know liberation: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of eradication, they know the knowing of destruction: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of arising, they know attention: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of contact, they know contact: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of convergence, they know feeling: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of prominence, they know concentration: thus they are called enlightenment factors.
By the meaning of predominance, they know mindfulness: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of surpassing, they know wisdom: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of essence, they know liberation: thus they are called enlightenment factors. By the meaning of immersion in the deathless, they know Nibbāna: thus they are called enlightenment factors.
Originating in Sāvatthi. There, the Venerable Sāriputta addressed the disciples: Friends, disciples. Friends, those disciples replied to the Venerable Sāriputta. The Venerable Sāriputta said this:
Friends, there are these seven enlightenment factors. What seven? The enlightenment factor of mindfulness, the enlightenment factor of investigation of states, ... the enlightenment factor of equanimity: these, friends, are the seven enlightenment factors.
Friends, whenever I wish to dwell in the morning with any of the seven factors of enlightenment, I dwell in the morning with that particular factor of enlightenment. Whenever I wish to dwell in the midday... likewise... whenever I wish to dwell in the evening, I dwell in the evening with that particular factor of enlightenment.
If the mindfulness factor of enlightenment arises in me, friends, it is boundless, it is well established. I know it as it stands. If it fades away, I know it fades away due to specific conditions.
If the investigation of states factor of enlightenment... likewise... if the equanimity factor of enlightenment arises in me, friends, it is boundless, it is well established. I know it as it stands. If it fades away, I know it fades away due to specific conditions.
Just as, friends, a king or a royal minister might have a chest full of various colored garments. Whatever pair of garments he wishes to wear in the morning, he would wear that pair of garments in the morning. Whatever pair of garments he wishes to wear in the midday... likewise... whatever pair of garments he wishes to wear in the evening, he would wear that pair of garments in the evening.
In the same way, friends, whenever I wish to dwell in the morning with any of the seven factors of enlightenment, I dwell in the morning with that particular factor of enlightenment. Whenever I wish to dwell in the midday... likewise... whenever I wish to dwell in the evening, I dwell in the evening with that particular factor of enlightenment.
If the mindfulness factor of enlightenment arises in me, friends, it is boundless, it is well established. I know it as it stands. If it fades away, I know it fades away due to specific conditions... likewise... if the equanimity factor of enlightenment arises in me, friends, it is boundless, it is well established. How is it that the mindfulness factor of enlightenment arises in me? As long as cessation is established, the mindfulness factor of enlightenment is established. Thus, it is the factor of enlightenment. Just as the flame of an oil lamp, as long as it burns, so long is its light; as long as its light, so long is its flame. Just as long as cessation is established, so long is the factor of enlightenment of mindfulness. Thus, if it is so for me, it is the factor of enlightenment.
How is it that immeasurable, if it is so for me is the factor of enlightenment? Defilements are bound by measure, all are obsessions, and all formations leading to rebirth are immeasurable cessation by the nature of being unshakable and unconditioned. As long as cessation is established, so long is it immeasurable. Thus, if it is so for me, it is the factor of enlightenment.
How is it that well-established, if it is so for me is the factor of enlightenment? Defilements are uneven, all are obsessions, and all formations leading to rebirth are even cessation by the nature of being peaceful and excellent. As long as cessation is established, so long is it well-established, if it is so for me, it is the factor of enlightenment.
