What is non-neighboring wisdom?

For the person who has attained, realized, and experienced with wisdom the discrimination of meaning through the determination of meaning, the discrimination of phenomena through the determination of phenomena, the discrimination of language through the determination of language, and the discrimination of perspicuity through the determination of perspicuity, no one else can surpass him in meaning, phenomena, language, or perspicuity.

He is unsurpassable by others:

this is non-neighboring wisdom.

The wisdom of an ordinary good person is far, very far, extremely far from the wisdom of one who has attained the eighth stage, not near, not neighboring.

Considering the ordinary good person, the one who has attained the eighth stage is non-neighboring in wisdom.

The wisdom of one who has attained the eighth stage is far, very far, extremely far from the wisdom of a stream-enterer, not near, not neighboring.

Considering the one who has attained the eighth stage, the stream-enterer is non-neighboring in wisdom.

The wisdom of a stream-enterer is far, very far, extremely far from the wisdom of a once-returner, not near, not neighboring.

Considering the stream-enterer, the once-returner is non-neighboring in wisdom.

The wisdom of a once-returner is far, very far, extremely far from the wisdom of a non-returner, not near, not neighboring.

Considering the once-returner, the non-returner is non-neighboring in wisdom.

The wisdom of a non-returner is far, very far, extremely far from the wisdom of an arahant, not near, not neighboring.

The non-returner is surpassed by the arahant who has comprehensive wisdom.

The wisdom of an arahant is far, very far, extremely far from the wisdom of a solitary Buddha; it is not near, not close.

The solitary Buddha is surpassed by the arahant in comprehensive wisdom.

The Tathagata, the arahant, the fully enlightened Buddha, is the foremost and surpasses the solitary Buddha and the world with its devas in comprehensive wisdom.

Skilled in the classification of wisdom, possessing penetrative knowing, having attained analytical insight, endowed with the four kinds of fearlessness, bearing the ten powers, the bull among men, the lion among men, the elephant among men, the thoroughbred among men, the leader among men, possessing infinite knowing, infinite power, infinite fame, wealthy, greatly wealthy, rich, a leader, a guide, a trainer, a proclaimer, a persuader, a seer, a purifier.

For he, the Blessed One, is the originator of the path that had not arisen, the producer of the path that had not been produced, the declarer of the path that had not been declared, the knower of the path, the expert in the path, the skilled in the path, and his disciples now live following the path, endowed with it afterward.

For he, the Blessed One, knows by knowing, sees by seeing, is the one who has become vision, who has become knowing, who has become the Dhamma, who has become Brahma, the speaker, the proclaimer, the bringer of meaning, the giver of the deathless, the master of the Dhamma, the Tathagata.

There is nothing unknown, unseen, unrecognized, unexperienced by the Blessed One with his wisdom.

All phenomena, past, future, and present, come into the range of the knowing of the Buddha, the Blessed One, in all aspects.

Whatever is to be known, all that is to be known.

Whether it is for one's own benefit, for the benefit of others, or for the benefit of both, whether it is a present benefit, a future benefit, an evident benefit, a profound benefit, a hidden benefit, a concealed benefit, a benefit to be known, a benefit that has been known, a blameless benefit, a benefit free from defilements, a pure benefit, an ultimate benefit, all that revolves within the knowing of the Buddha.

All bodily actions revolve around the knowing of the Buddha, the Blessed One.

All verbal actions revolve around the knowing of the Buddha, the Blessed One.

All mental actions revolve around the knowing of the Buddha, the Blessed One.

In the past, the knowing of the Buddha, the Blessed One, was unobstructed.

In the future, the knowing of the Buddha, the Blessed One, will be unobstructed.

In the present, the knowing of the Buddha, the Blessed One, is unobstructed.

As much as there is to be known, so much is the knowing; as much as there is knowing, so much is to be known.

The knowing is limited by what is to be known, and what is to be known is limited by the knowing.

Knowledge does not proceed beyond what is to be known.

There is no path of what is to be known beyond the knowing.

They are mutually dependent phenomena.

Just as when two petals of a lotus are properly touching, the lower petal does not surpass the upper petal, and the upper petal does not surpass the lower petal, they are mutually dependent;

In the same way, the Buddha's knowing and what is to be known are mutually dependent.

As much as there is to be known, so much is the knowing; as much as there is knowing, so much is there to be known.

Knowledge is limited by what is to be known, and what is to be known is limited by knowing.

Knowledge does not proceed beyond what is to be known.

There is no path of knowing beyond what is to be known.

They are mutually dependent phenomena.

The Buddha's knowing operates in all phenomena.

All phenomena are connected to the Buddha's attention, intention, consideration, and mental application.

The Buddha's knowing operates in all beings.

The Buddha knows the disposition, tendencies, conduct, and inclinations of all beings.

He knows beings with little defilement, great defilement, sharp faculties, dull faculties, easy to instruct, difficult to instruct, capable and incapable beings.

The world with its gods, Maras, Brahmas, ascetics, and Brahmins, with its beings, gods, and humans, revolves within the Buddha's knowing.

Just as all fish and turtles, including the great whales, revolve within the great ocean,

In the same way, the world with its gods, Maras, Brahmas, ascetics, and Brahmins, with its beings, gods, and humans, revolves within the Buddha's knowing.

Just as all birds, including the great Garuda, revolve within the sky,

In the same way, even those as wise as Sariputta revolve within the domain of the Buddha's knowing.

The Buddha's knowing encompasses and surpasses the wisdom of gods and humans.

Even the wise Kshatriyas, Brahmins, householders, and ascetics, skilled in debate, who wander about breaking others views with their wisdom, come to the Tathagata with their questions, both hidden and open.

Those questions, when asked, are answered and explained by the Blessed One.

They are resolved and clarified by the Blessed One.

Then the Blessed One shines forth in wisdom.

He is supreme in wisdom, and his supremacy in wisdom is established.

This is extensive wisdom.

The Tathagata, the Arahant, the Fully Enlightened One, having attained the highest proficiency in analytical knowing, skilled in the classification of wisdom, with broken knowing, having attained analytical knowing, possessing the four kinds of intrepidity, bearing the ten powers, the bull among men, the lion among men...

Even those wise Khattiyas, wise Brahmins, wise householders, wise ascetics, skilled in the doctrines of others, appearing like archers, wandering about as if breaking through with their wisdom, having views, they construct questions and approach the Tathagata to ask hidden and concealed questions.

Those questions are explained and answered by the Blessed One, with the reasons pointed out, and they are satisfied with the Blessed One's answers.

Then the Blessed One excels there, namely, in wisdom, as the one who has attained the highest proficiency in analytical knowing.

The great discourse on wisdom is concluded.
