3.5. Discussion on Conduct

Conduct refers to eight types of conduct:

Conduct in bodily postures, conduct in the sense bases, conduct in mindfulness, conduct in concentration, conduct in knowing, conduct in the path, conduct in attainment, and conduct in benefiting the world.

Conduct in bodily postures refers to the four bodily postures.

Conduct in the sense bases refers to the six internal and external sense bases.

Conduct in mindfulness refers to the four foundations of mindfulness.

Conduct in concentration refers to the four jhānas.

Conduct in knowing refers to the four noble truths.

Conduct in the path refers to the four noble paths.

Conduct in attainment refers to the four fruits of recluseship.

Conduct in benefiting the world refers to the Tathāgatas, the Arahants, the Fully Enlightened Ones, the solitary Buddhas, and the disciples.

Conduct in bodily postures is for those endowed with resolution.

Conduct in the sense bases is for those who guard the sense doors.

Conduct in mindfulness is for those who dwell diligently.

Conduct in concentration is for those devoted to higher mind.

Conduct in knowing is for those endowed with wisdom.

Conduct in the path is for those who practice rightly.

Conduct in attainment is for those who have attained the fruits.

Conduct in benefiting the world is for the Tathāgatas, the Arahants, the Fully Enlightened Ones, the solitary Buddhas, and the disciples.

These are the eight types of conduct.

There are also another eight types of conduct.

One practices with determination through faith, one practices with effort through energy, one practices with establishment through mindfulness, one practices with non-distraction through concentration, one practices with understanding through wisdom, one practices with discernment through knowing, one practices with the arising of wholesome states through conduct in the sense bases, and one practices with the attainment of distinction through conduct in distinction.

These are the eight types of conduct.

There are also another eight types of conduct.

Conduct in seeing is through right view, conduct in intention is through right intention, conduct in speech is through right speech, conduct in action is through right action, conduct in livelihood is through right livelihood, conduct in effort is through right effort, conduct in mindfulness is through right mindfulness, and conduct in concentration is through right concentration.

These are the eight types of conduct.
